How a Forward With No Pace Or Skills Outplayed Everyone

Thomas Muller is one of the most unique player that this generation has seen because he doesn't have world class pace, world class skills, or even world class dribbling but he still managed to become one of the most accomplished footballers. He has managed to win the bundesliga, dfb pokal, champions league, and the world cup but he the latter two only came after couple heartbreaks early on in his career. Muller was luckily able to overcome his losses to 2010 Spain and 2010 Inter Milan to bounce back and redeem himself just couple years later.

@@therentboys7787 if you really think Neymar is bigger in World football than Müller that's a wild guess. Legacy, accomplishements etc all in Müllers favor. The only thing he is not is louder and flashier than neymar. Müller is 33 and still performing on highest level whilst Neymar just decided to basically end his career. If you ask my personal opinion. Neymar would have been the better player if he would have decided to put more effort in it. But he decided not too. He had way more potential than Müller ever would have BUT and that's the big difference. Mindset and work ethic makes Müller more valuable for beasically every single team he would have played on. Everyone considers the German football team a force to reckon with and a poor showing in the World Cup by Germany is considered a surprise by anyone. Any football fan who follows the EPL will most likely be aware of the hype that 'potential' players eyed by EPL clubs receive. That hype will never be there for German players simply because the marketing of the Bundesliga in the Anglosphere is well below the EPL. Thomas Muller is known as one of the greats by anyone who has seen the German national team or Bayern Munich play. Harry Kane's move to Bayern and Lewandowski's move out of Bayern has introduced the team name to a wider audience in recent times. Müller is a Legend. His abilities are often talked down but looking at FbRef Stats and his play style it is undeniable that his only real weakness is dribbling and 1v1. Everything else he excels at or at least holds his own in the top 5 leagues. His first touch is somewhat inconsistent when he tries to keep the ball or set himself up for a shot on goal. But his direct passing linking play to his team mates is always 1 step ahead of everyone else. Müller is a dream come true for youth trainers; he always already has a plan when he gets the ball and he knows exactly how his teammates think. His crossing is also on point. Him an Lewandowski were magical to witness. If you'd set him free blindfolded with a ball he would be sure to find Lewa anywhere on the planet. He is a very special player in his work rate, leadership skills, vision, anticipation, reading of the game, passing and crossing, interlinking game... He is a player you naturally underestimate by his physique. You can run faster than him, outdribble him, physically overpower him but you can't outsmart him in the long run. His nearly inhury free career is also helping him a lot. Marco Reus could be just as important and respected in German and club football if he wasn't made of glass. His numbers are astonishing for someone basically missing half seasons on the reg.

I've seen Toni Kroos live on a regular basis in his 2nd Bayer 04 loan year (2009/10) and in most of the games he seemed playing on Bundesliga level without any rush. He just moved in the right places a second before the rest of the players even realised what would most probably happen next on the pitch. Kroos was 20 years old then. Müller is the same age and also has that skill. So the conditions were quite comparable. However, Müller is playing a forward role. You only get a fraction of time to make your decisions compared to the central midfield. Thomas Müller brought in an unseen and creative understanding of what can be played in the final third of the pitch.

Intelligence is just as important of an asset for a football player as pace or skill. I've only played at a decent amateur level, but we had one guy who became a Raumdeuter due to injury. Before the injury the guy was an absolute beast in our league. He was one of if not the fastest and most skilled player in the entire league, but due to his injury he had to undergo several knee surgeries and missed almost 3 entire years and when he finally returned, even though doctors told him to quit soccer, he had lost pretty much all his stamina and speed, but he adapted very well to this situation. Most of the time he was just walking around the pitch reading the game, but when he saw an opportunity, he jumped into action or ditched out amazing passes that would make some pro players jealous. He scored less goals than he used to before the injury, but his assists skyrocketed and he made the players around him much better, because by walking around and reading the game, he often picked up on weaknesses of the opponents defense. He was almost like an additional coach

It's funny he isn't considered to excel at any real footballing skills except for his overall/footballing IQ. While to me he is the perfect example of what a stereotype footballer looks like. Perhaps players like Iniesta still takes that actual crown because they do have the footballing edge over someone like Müller but then again, Iniesta is one of the best players ever so how fair is that?
@Plupert
@Plupert 8 місяців тому
I think a lot of that difference comes from where they were developed. I imagine Muller would've had a very similar style to Iniesta if he was developed at La Masia, but Muller may just be too big in general to play like Iniesta. Muller is 6'1" vs Iniesta at 5'7"

The things that stood out with him for me was his charme outside the game and on the pitch - he has to be good for morale, which is super important next to the fact that he seems to be someone who trys to push everyone else at the same time. The other thing that makes him very dangerous (besides his positioning that seems to break many defenses due because he is hard to predict: He is the kind of player that even if you stop him with a foul, or two, he just gets up and goes on. There are some forwards/offensive players you can destroy with rough play, he often seemed like the guy who doesn't give a shit.

Müller also set the tone for Germany's World Cup win in 2014 - not just with his goals vs Portugal but it was him who took it to the Portuguese and he had a big part in Pepe being sent off. Müller just wins, simple as that. He was the embodiment of winning in that very first game, it was Neuer vs Algeria, Kroos (in my opinion) vs Brazil and Schweinsteiger in the Final. What a squad that was, every single one of them plus Klose and Lahm not just a German football legend but known all over the world.

Another casual who thinks skills equate to good football. Skills are a sideshow that more often than not take away from efficiency. I'm almost certain Muller or any professional player of a certain caliber onwards can do skills if they practice them enough, it's simply not important and just for show. Not that I'm against skills but purely football wise they add nothing and sometimes are a detriment to the team of the player doing them.
