30 years ago, Hyundai was seen as a small Korean company that made cheap, ugly and unreliable vehicles. People even joked about the brand, saying you could double a Hyundai’s value if you filled it up with gas.
But now a days… they are among the best quality vehicles in the market, overthrowing giants like Ford, Honda and General Motors, to become the third largest producer of cars in the global market.
But what’s fascinating about this, is the man who started it all.
A farm boy, who only wanted to escape from poverty, left home as a teenager and embarked on a journey full of failures, misfortunes and embarrassments.
Despite the adversity, he went on to create the biggest company in South Korea and took over by storm not only the automobile industry, but also shipbuilding, construction and so much more, turning himself into the richest man in Korea.
This is the rags to riches story of Hyundai, and the man behind it, Chung Yu-Jung.

Only YHVH El-Elyon Ahura Mazda Shang-Di Jesus Christ can forgive sin and save a person by God's fulfilled work through Messiah Virgin Birth Savior whereby all Holy animal sacrifices were (counted) applied attributed to the work of God on the Cross-(2nd Temple) through the Perfect Lawful Holy Life of Messiah Jesus Christ. It is God's Choice by the word of God made flesh Jesus Christ that a person sealed by God's Holy Spirit through covenant be saved upon Resurrection of the Righteous being Born Again with a Glorified Body; having physically died with a righteous pure heart in full agreement with God's Truth and Law. Whereby no past unholy unlawful evil action is justified in heart but fully confessed repented of sin before all creation and God the Heavenly Father. Enter into Holy Covenant and accept God's Gift cleansing payment ritual purification for sins by the blood of Messiah Jesus Christ. Learn the Holy Art of Prayer, Jesus Christ is Alive! Acts 17:30 “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:” We may ask or beg, but only Jesus Christ can absolve and forgive us our sins. When elders speak of taking hold of the Blood of Messiah, they mean Jesus Christ applying his blood as the High Priest and Messiah upon confession/full repentance. (Shinto) Shang-Di Lord of Heaven and the Four Heavenly Kings: Jikokuten, Tamonten, Zochoten, and Komokuten . Revelation 7:1 KJV “And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.” Mandate of Heaven: To be Counted Righteous always meant to reject Evil absolutely never allowed to justify evil crime lawlessness in heart thus when being made aware of Law (Truth) thus taking God at his word (God's word (law) made flesh: Jesus Christ replacement of First Man & the Lord of Heaven in the Flesh the literal Body of God) hence obedience and sacrifice the test of the heart (In full legal agreement with/Listening to God). The Heart is what has always been judged (pure) as good or evil. (Once learned made aware of Law, All People held to account judged by Law known/Israel.) Children, Free Will, & The Tower of Babel cultural language divide delays Jesus Christ's reign as when he claims throne he is immediately responsible for judging all both living and dead. All ancients knew of the promised resurrection of the Dead (Reincarnation), virgin birth, and Judgement Day of the Righteous and Wicked souls; To be perfect is to be complete according to set standard, mathematical law of absolutes good vs evil. The true opposite of love is unholy selfishness, the epitome of pride is self-righteousness (unmerited value/unlawfully agreed). People confuse pride with its righteous opposite which is Glory/Honor all ancients sought. Good is that of Truth/Holy Lawful Order, & Justice. Evil is that of Lies, unlawful disorder, chaos. Clean vs Unclean, Holy Lawful Hate vs Unholy Criminal Hate. Jesus Christ is the Law and the Test of Faith & Heart concerning righteousness and ritual purity (Ritual Purification) "Sanctification" that which is Holy; whereby Jesus Christ (The Lamb of God) the word of God in the flesh is the standard of measure how a person is judged as good or evil based on their choice to receive God's payment blood covering sacrifice through Jesus Christ's Perfect Lawful Life. Faith=Trust. As with the Israelites the Living God sent Holy Angels to cultures such as the Native Americans giving them a form of the Gift of Tongues (prayer language whereby the Blood of Jesus Christ by word law promise of God virgin birth covenant was invoked for healing etc. binding and sealing evil spirits). Many Native Americans are mixed with Israelite Tribes of Asher, Gad, and Nephtali. There were pure hearted people and evil "witch" magicians and false prophets using evil spirits (all ghosts are demons unlawful spirit creatures from Fallen Angels/humans having unnatural sex with animals) among the Native Americans as with all groups that were sent the law and real prophets of God. Zoroastrianism is named after Zarathustra/Zoroaster a Prophet of the Living God whereby that "religion" is actually fully tied too thus derived from the Melchizedek Covenant. The Emperors of Ancient China acted as High Priest for the Kingdom people and land sacrificing a lamb at the Temple of Heaven to the Lord of Heaven just the same as the Israelites were instructed. Hyundai first introduced the Santro in India in 1998. At that time it was the most advanced car we had ever seen as India had a closed economy and the car market was in its infancy. At that time, nobody had seen a car like the Santro, it wasn’t the most comfortable or best looking but its engine was reliable and efficient, along with decent power, which other brands lacked. It was an instant hit at that time.

My first Hyundai was a 2002 Elantra GT. I drove it for 6 years and regret selling it. Granted living in Montreal with salted roads, it was rusting. But I feel that model was so good that many other cars felt like downgrades. The "Beta2" engine (Simple 2.0 DOHC 16Valve) with 138hp was not necessarily fast or super efficient but it was bullet proof and had a good linear powerband. It was super comfortable and to date one of the most reliable cars I ever owned. Also back then Honda was sleeping on their reputation as they released the Civic's with the D17 engines which were absolutely mediocre in every way. Don't get me wrong, to me Honda's are the best cars and arguably the best engines out there. (B series and specially the K series... their V6's are also amazing) But Hyundai did good. But in present day I wouldn't call them more reliable then Honda or Toyota. After their Beta2... they released a flawed 1.8 for newer elantras that grenaded itself. Not sure where they are at now. Reliability is a real challenge for most companies today with the strict emissions requirements and high pressure, sensor filled turbocharged engines of the present.

Being someone who has seen way too many failures in life myself, from rags to riches and back again multiple times, i can totally relate with the last words where he says that one must never forget their failures. Being an example myself i know what that means. I have lived those nerve-shattering moments so many times that now it doesnt feel that bad but keeps me motivated moving forward. Failures is all i remember. Good times were only there as i reminder that its always possible to succeed with the right attitude.

There were some more notable events worth mentioning. 1. Hyundai was eager to develop their own products, unlike its competitors who relied longer on profit through licensed production. After multiple attempts, by the late 1980s, Hyundai vehicles were much more suitable for the local market compared to others, eventually taking the top spot. One particular vehicle is the Grandeur(Azera) that quickly stepped over Daewoo(GM) who was dominating the Korean market at the time. Hyundai's partner Mitsubishi was struggling in the luxury car segment, hence the Hyundai counterpart got a better deal in receiving the latest tech, where as a typical third world nation manufacturer would receive dated technology. The coincidence of economic boom in Korea also helped Hyundai generate enormous profit in its home market, along with the aid of regulations forced on foreign manufacturers. So a lot of lucky factors played a big role in Hyundai already making it near worldwide top 10 before sales in North America skyrocketed. 2. The founder of Hyundai, the one mentioned in this video, is the one who opened up tourism into North Korea along with another reunion of family members who were separated after the war(the first one was held in the mid 1980s, not by him though). Although I don't know of any solid proof, he is known to have stolen his dad's ox on his escape to sell it, so when he visited North Korea shortly before his death, he had donated tens of thousands of staples to the North, to make up for what he had done as a young broke boy. So this man has done more than just building the most successful business in the nation but has accomplished a lot in humanism too. Unfortunately, after his death, his heirs went on multiple lawsuits to secede from their dad's company and Mong-Koo was the one who continued on with the now independent automotive sector. 3. Merging with Kia is not known to be voluntary although the media says it is. The great depression of South Korea in 1998 had multiple automobile manufacturers go bankrupt so it is known that the Korean government put pressure into Daewoo to merge with Ssangyong and Hyundai to merge with Kia. Eventually Daewoo went bankrupt too, M&A'd by GM in the early 2000s, as well as Samsung who was bought out by Renault. This effectively made Hyundai-Kia the only completely domestic manufacturer and ever since, it holds a great majority in market share, recently surpassing 90% of all vehicles sold in Korea. - Here is my personal opinion on some turning points for Hyundai. Hyundai, relying on Mitsubishi tech up until the early 2000s was failing in competitiveness in the worldwide market due to Mitsubishi going through struggles of its own and was unable to update their tech. Hyundai, who started to develop its own engines beginning with the release of Alpha engine in 1991, still had Mitsubishi derived engines for Sonata and upmarket. If a car is to be underpowered, it should compensate that in fuel economy but neither was outstanding for Hyundai, that they chose to put up 10years/100,000 miles warranty to keep up(I do admit the outstanding warranty was a successful strategy). The first time I thought when Hyundai was now competitive was when they came up with the 2005 Sonata, with an all new powertrain that kept up with competition in terms of figures, built in the US. This Sonata was the first one to ever beat a major competing vehicle, surpassing Nissan Altima for months in sales. Hyundai would continue on its good work in keeping the figures competitive, at one point reaching 90 horsepower per liter naturally aspirated, and a staggering 271 horsepower for its 2.0 liter turbo that came in the following generation of Sonata. It was late 2000s to early 2010s when the buying public compared products in specifications and actually opted for Hyundai. Chassis Rigidity was also widely promoted during this era, further convincing the buying public that Hyundai products are actually outstanding. During the 2010s Hyundai also saw huge market penetration in lesser known markets, becoming #1 in Chile, Russia and so on. The strong market penetration also happened in western Europe, particularly by Kia. One event I would like to mention is, that the 2009 Kia Rio achieved an on-par CO2 emissions with the leading competitors in this sector, namely Peugeot, with its exclusive tech(LNT) eliminating the need of SCR(DEF). This tech was also used by VW but its diesel scandal also played a big role when VW cheated while Hyundai did not, using the same tech. After making it to the top 3 last year, now it is a matter of how well a manufacturer performs in EVs and I think Hyundai is again very lucky to have worldwide giants both in semiconductors and batteries within the same country. Speaking of specification, it is doing well in keeping the figures above average, as they have always been keen since the late 2000s. The most recent news tells us Hyundai's profitability is projected to surpass that of Toyota, which was deemed impossible looking at the stats when Toyota was at its peak. It is understandable that Koreans are very proud of Hyundai, since the country was broke af and people who are still alive have witnessed it all.

A great story of a remarkable man who never gave up no matter how things could go wrong. One of the best things they did in the last 20 years was to invite Audi's top designer Peter Schreyer to work for them as a chief designer. From that moment on Hyundai and Kia started to design top level cars that could compete with the topbrands in the car industry. Nowadays Hyundai and Kia are at the top of their game selling more cars than ever thanks to Peter Schreyer.
