A 3D animation showing how a Remington 870 pump-action shotgun works. Cinema 4D was used to create each individual part, as well as animating everything. Substance Painter was used to create the wood stock and fore-end textures. Corona renderer was used for final output of lighting and textures.

Seriously, you see guns all the time, and even more “simple” guns like shotguns are WAY more complicated than expected.

@@mattrittman If you want to model something a bit different but equal in engineering, take a look at a Jennings Standard Chief slot machine from around the 1920s or so. The amount of thought that went into those is ridiculous. And since half the country is a bunch of degenerate gamblers, it might rack up some decent views. 👍👊

Ikr! But to be fair, this is a gradual improvement! from a basic blueprint of the most primitive musket guns, which overtime is improved and made more efficient, comes our modern gun designs. Amazing how humanity's long history creates such genius designs

If you think that’s impressive, definitely take a look at pocket watches from the late 1800s, early 1900s. Absolutely mind boggling the precision and tolerances that were achieved and the craftsmanship in those days. My oldest are from the 1880s and it really seems like some kind of time-machine magic that they came from that era. Also, on the larger side of mechanical wizardry, any internal combustion engine, transmission, and carburetor is also a sight to behold.

All guns really. Some modern guns have like 200 parts and the engineering behind them is incredible. Edit: changed "moving parts" to just "parts". Examples of 200+ part guns are most modern belt fed LMGs and aircraft mounted cannons. Some rifles and smgs come close to the 200 part mark like ruger precision rifle and FN2000

Fun fact older shotguns such as the Ithaca 37 and Winchester 1897 did not have a trigger disconnect meaning as long as you held down the trigger, the next shell would immediately be fired when put into battery. the mechanics of guns have fascinated me for years, especially when you consider that they were made by really clever people basically as an upgrade from just throwing rocks and spears at each other, like someone had to without any prior knowledge or really guiding help, had to work out so much of it
@BenjaminISmith
@BenjaminISmith 2 роки тому
I've always been fascinated with the mechanics of guns too. You know that slingshots and spears are made by literal apes though, they aren't the direct predecessors to the Remington 870. There was about 300 years between a time when a metal tube with a spring powered flint and steel at the back was the pinnacle of gun technology and today. Even before that there were wheel-locks and completely manual guns used all the way back in medieval times. They were making pocket watches before semi auto weapons, it was hardly a rapid conceptual or engineering leap, albeit a great and revolutionary conceptual and engineering leap

Us Palestinian are still throwing rocks. We can only imagine to have a few weapons. Things would be different.
@scottwatrous
@scottwatrous 2 роки тому
Well each small evolutionary step in firearms technology came from folks learning about that which came before and then improving one little detail or two, or sometimes re-working the existing ideas into something different to solve a new problem. The 870 shotgun came from all of the lessons learned from those who designed the previous pump shotguns, and those first pump shotguns came as an answer to other methods of reloading like lever action and those came from folks trying to add a way to not just hand load each round, which was already an improvement over those who were muzzle-loading. Not that those who make the next generational improvements over and over aren't brilliant in their ways, but certainly are standing on the shoulders of the designs that came before. Also to be fair, it wasn't until relatively recently that cartridge firearms even were possible (approx 150 years or so) so a LOT of learning happened really quickly once that technology came about. We're still learning new options today.
@magnuskallas
@magnuskallas 2 роки тому
@@scottwatrous Correct. First basic "firearms" were technically just downsized cannons. The "trigger" was there for more practical reason so one could use both hands to keep the thing steady when firing (no trigger needed for a cannon that lays on the ground). True, the side effect of that was also a better control over the timing of the shot. The real advancement happened after proper cartridges appeared.

Those animations surely are amazing, but the engineering is evidently more complex. I am no gun engineer, but my brother is. He has built guns, but is mostly doing repair, restoration and modifying, not inventing new guns. It is truly impressive how many mechanisms are at use and how it all plays together. If you really want to understand any gun, you have to dismantle it, and first and foremost shoot it. Nevertheless, the animations on this channel are the closest you can get to comprehending a gun you never touched. Hats off!

It's not as "genius" as you think it is. This took HUNDREDS of years with trial & error to form and even in todays' state, many aspects of it are arguably overly complex leading to unnecessary costs, less reliability and more expensive maintenance.

That’s due to the magic of machining tolerances. A average part will have X amounts of tolerance from each other to where some parts may be oversized or undersized and still work, and also potentially have a setup to which it will “wear in” to where the parts will work together.

I have the same feeling regarding... pretty much everything. From living beings, to computer code. When you break stuff down, you tend to get this feeling of "okay, there's some time between each slow step", but then you realize stuff like cells replicating and computers loading something goes so fast you can't really comprehend it.
@mrroams5812
@mrroams5812 2 роки тому
@@Ch4pp13 I agree. The problem isn't really understanding what's really going on it's just the speed and *amount* of stuff happening at a time. It's like trying to conceptualize very large numbers in your mind. Human brains just weren't built to be able to do that easily.
