I keep arguing with my son over the skills required for drifting vs 'Proper' motorsport. His argument is, drifters throw cars sideways at every corner and control them, which requires more skill. My argument is that F1 drivers control slides that happen in the blink of an eye, and react to them in milliseconds. Drifters throw their cars into a slide, and so they know exactly what the car is going to do. I think Alonso is kind of doing the same thing here, only with the front, instead of the rear. His skills go to a new level, though, because he still has to be on high alert for the rear breaking traction, on exit

I was a test and demo driver for RenaultF1 back in 2008/09 and I discussed this exact topic with Pat Symmonds about the car and Fernandos unorthodox style when I worked at Enstone. Your explanation is bang on. The R25 strength in particular was the traction as you say, which Pat and the engineers had devised from the previous 2 years and realised it was more effective with the tyres to have a chassis with incredible traction. The R25 was the ultimate evolution of the concept designed with a higher V angle and more rear biased weight balance and even more extreme than the R24.. Pat showed me Fernandos 2005 telemetry vs Trulli and he would literally plant the throttle down everywhere such was the level of traction the car had. It was an almost point and squirt style like a 911 Porsche. Despite a slower entry and mid corner speed than Trulli, he nailed him everywhere out of the corners and of course as you know most time is all made up on the straights. Pat actually advised Fernando to try this style when he was a test driver a couple of years earlier and when they realised it worked kept it as "their dirty little secret" and developed the chassis accordingly but it wasnt his default style it was adapted to the cars. It also enabled incredible consistency and race pace lap after lap with very few mistakes as inducing understeer is easier to manage than oversteer over a race distance.

@yung_bonsai3 роки тому
think drifting, but the front tires are the ones breaking traction, and instead of the back end swinging out, you just don't turn as sharply, and go straighter than your wheels, or steering wheel would indicate. This would make the front tires hotter, hence better grip, and, as discussed in the video, the car already had amazing grip in the back, giving him AMAZING exit speeds and killer time on the straight aways, making up for, and exceeding the times of everyone who took the corners "perfectly" but lost speed.

One aspect of this that's often overlooked is that, by inducing understeer himself, he was creating the conditions of that understeer. He was being proactive, rather than reactive, which meant he had better control of the outcome of a given corner. Often, especially under less-than-ideal-traction situations, a driver will react to an event, then spend even more time reacting to how the car handles the previous reaction. The driver is essentially late to the party by the time they react to the event. If, however, the driver intentionally induces the event, he's already ahead of the game. He knows it's going to happen and therefore is already doing what he needs to "catch" the event before it becomes a problem. This is normally just an issue when the cars are traction-limited , such as cold tires, cold track, wet track, etc. That said, it's something dirt racers train for until it becomes second nature, whereas I've yet to see many asphalt racers even take this approach. To see Fernando doing this, specifically because of the design of his car and the tires he used, is really cool. It showed that the elite F1 drivers are really on a different level. Whether it's his coach, his test driver, someone else, or just Fernando himself, it's a good example of someone making extreme adjustments to their driving style in order to win.

It was specific to Michelin tyres characteristic combined with Renault's design he scrubbed his front tyres to heat up to make them bite. He completely changed his style when he switched to Bridgeston tyred McLaren. Besides Alonso there were few other drivers were applying this technique like Trulli and Kubica (as far as I noticed) but only on slow corners or when wet. As far as I remember both Fernando and Jarno were doing this weird but effective understeer technique when they were teammates in 2004. Fernando was doing this on almost all corners and he was trying to perfect this style from as early as 2004, he pushed his front tyres to the point the outside tyre would wobble!

Alonso greatest haters are those whose driver he threatened with his performances....... ;) In realy he is the best driver of his generation and the only two drivers that were at that level from the previous and following generation were Schumacher and Hamilton. Vettel was never THAT good
@arofanurrahman22283 роки тому
How come Alonso has hate for his performance on the track? Yes, off-track he made mistakes and so does every driver. But, man. You can't hate his sheer driving talent and precise racing performance. Leave the hate behind, honestly. It his racing style that we had to look up to.
@keithwwalker3 роки тому
I recall watching one race weekend, when it was the final for pole position. All the riders were trying to speed through the last corner, trying to maximise their arc and speed through the turn. Alonso, sacrificed his tires to cut the arc in half and head straight for the start/finish line. He made pole position that day, and that was the edge.

Using Spa 2004 to indicate that the danger of when the rear lets go is a bad example as Alonso had an oil leak so his 2 spins were not to do with his driving style.

This was just to extract the most from the tail heavy but supple Bob Bell designs of the time. He doesn't do this in any other cars but the R23-R26 Michelin's per-team bespoke tires were an element that allowed the Bell cars to be driven in a way that saves the rears, as well.

This is one of the many reasons Alonso is commonly viewed as the best driver on the grid throughout his careers. His immense skill allowed him to do things even other drivers would never have the balls to attempt let alone pull off consistently. It’s amazing how well he could out drive the cars he was in. Hamilton may have as much talent, but Alonso is just more fun to watch drive.
@jamiecf29923 роки тому
I remember to read those days how this car setup ready for Alonso was the reason because mass dumper was so efficient in the Renault, because to resist this strong turn entry tyre's sides were very stiff and they sent huge vibrations to the chassis that mass dumper compensated. For example Ferrari tested the mass dumper and they refused it. And it says good things of Alonso who had to readapt his driving style in 2007 because Bridgestones (tyres developed for Ferrari and Schumacher) had much softer sides and did not allow him to drive this way. Despite this, he found the way to keep quick and competitive with Bridgestones and then even with tricky Pirellis. Probably Fisichella was not happy with the car, because of that he was so easily beaten by Alonso. However Hamilton could have taken advantage on Alonso because the time of readaptation the spaniard had to have in his driving style because tyre switch and he could be closer from the beginning.

This technique was also used by Stirling Moss, as described in The Racing Driver by Denis Jenkinson. Moss would induce the front to slide, then grip, deliberately changing from understeer to oversteer. This enabled the the car to flick quickly from left to right through a left, right kink on the public road during the MIlle Miglia. Done correctly, there was never any need to turn the steering to the right, as the steering was then already opposite locked to the left to control the oversteer on the exit of the second part of the kink.

Understeering is like making off-beats to a song. Risks one whole connection of a song, but will hold up more potential than even breaking the rear wheels' traction.
