Ummm... well it has been passed down correct and brought into the marriage so why not continue to do so her mom will be old as dirt too so why sell it for her you know like it's a generational home you gotta keep it in the family her mom is the selfish one here don't put her down and say she has no right to speak on something I'd go to my dad and say let me have that property in the will I will take great care of it and our family will have that valuable asset that if absolutely necessary can be sold but for the betterment of the whole family not just because y'all are married and she doesn't have a job that's stupid your kids should take care of you when you are old and as you heard she offered to do so I don't get the disrespect of your children you have assets now that should continue to be passed down that's how it works don't be selfish like that

Since her father inherited the property that has been in the family for generations she feels it should be passed down to her instead of sold upon her father's death. Her father didn't earn this wealth but now it is to be selfishly spent. I understand her mindset as if I ever inherit money I would pass it down to my heirs instead of just blowing it. In all endeavors, try to leave things better than you found them.

Kind of shocking to me that Dave and Anthony didn't even discuss this. Maybe it is the caller's fault for not emphasizing it, but maybe Dave doesn't think it matters. I'm so grateful my parents can take care of themselves. They did really well. None of the kids have to worry about anything for them. I really thought about this, I seen some parent have absolutely no planning and no pension and the burden goes to the kids. If the kids are doing well, it's fine but what if they are not. I seen kids that don't make much and are struggling. Poor countries in the Philippeans are like this. The kid makes $200 a month and have to give to parents, if not they will stave. It's common in my area too. The waterfront cottages grandparents bought for $2000 in the 60s are $1.5mil today. The kids don't have the cash to buy it and the parents don't have enough other cash to gift the legacy forward. I think if it's been in the family for several generations that the family members should have some rights of first refusal when it comes to the mother selling it for the proceeds. If it's important enough to the other family members as Laura claims it is then they could all buy a share and put the money where their mouth is. I'm having this same issue, my father passed, my brother passed, and mom's been making some very questionable decisions since getting a boyfriend. I don't want the house sold nor am I in a position to buy it now, I asked her to wait, and she did offer it to me, but a few hours after she did, she got a contract that later fell through. Is there a form I can file or something since she's making these poor/terrible decisions? I did offer to pay to keep the house up, utilities and taxes since it's about the same price as to renting a storage unit for 40 years worth of stuff. I'm trying to protect her asset as well as save the family home.

I don't think she felt entitled. Not sure where everyone is getting that idea. She was asking if she, as the daughter of the owner, has any right in asking them to consider NOT selling the property when the dad dies. According to you guys in the comments, she has absolutely no say at all. Dude dies. Sell the house. No discussion. That she should just shut up and watch the house go.

I felt the air of entitlement in that call. You can't go always go by the tone. Sometimes you gotta pay attention to the words spoken. She blatantly says what is there I can do to stop it... And she acts as if the idea of her purchasing it herself had ever occured to her which is definitely. If she came right out and said she would love to buy it but can't afford it that would be one thing. She literally just has no intention of actually buying it not even 20 years from now.

I think Dave’s point was that she has no legal or moral right to the property. I don’t think he says she can’t ask them to not sell the property. It’s just that she has no right to expect them do what she wants. Besides she has plenty of time to save up money to buy all or part of the property herself.

She made a little dig about her mom not working. I think it’s safe to argue she feels entitled to the cottage and blames her mom for not working harder. She’s also planning out what she’s going to get if her dad (who isn’t even that old) dies.
@Grigsy
@Grigsy 2 роки тому
Why isn’t Dave pointing out that her mom’s financial security is the most important thing in this equation not the childhood memories. She was a stay at home wife/mom and it’s her decision what to do with that property and her husband would want to make sure she is taken care of.

It really doesnt matter what her Dad puts in his will today. Unless he wills the cottage to the caller, the cottage will pass to the young stepmother (who doesn't work), and the stepmother will do whatever she wants. Both dad and stepmom would need this first right of refusal clause in their respective wills and it would need to be unchangeable.

Karen, I don't understand your comment. "It doesn't matter what he puts in his will, because unless he puts it in the will it won't happen." If he puts this provision in the will today, then that's what happens. Plus, the father could put it in a trust.

It's not "entitlement" to think a house that has been in the family for generations should stay in the family. Tradition apparently means nothing to the people on this show. You can't take the house with you when you pass, but it is nice knowing your kids and grandkids can still make memories on the property you, your parents, grandparents, grew up on.
