Hondo Underwood is a former car thief, and now shares information with the public about how to avoid falling victim to theft.
Underwood speaks with Business Insider about methods of breaking into vehicles, such as relay theft. He offers insights into how chop shops operate and how organized crime groups conspire to transport stolen vehicles across the border to Mexico. He also notes the models of cars he stole, including Chevrolets and Ford pickup trucks, and discusses the realism of car theft in movies and games like "Gone in 60 Seconds" and "Grand Theft Auto."
He stole hundreds of cars in and around Denver between 2016 and 2017.
A Marine Corps veteran, he was ordered to complete a rehabilitation program by a Colorado Veterans Treatment Court. He now works in the construction industry.

I think you are reading too much into it. He didn't blame drugs, he merely pointed out that drug use leads to crime, which everyone knows. As far as saying it was fun, in order to tell his story he has to take his mind back to those days, and yes, I'm sure there was a rush to it and probably fun at the time. It's very clear he now fully recognizes how bad it was to to do that stuff.

What justice do you want? Just because he says he stole all those cars doesn’t mean he just gets tossed in prison. The State would still need evidence so as to charge and convict him, which definitely isn’t going to happen when the cars are long gone. The fact he did serve some time, and went to drug treatment, and went on to help the police seems like a good outcome to me. The goal with any career criminal is to rehabilitate them so they can be normal law abiding members of the community, which he is now. Why would you want to toss him back in prison where he would beat yet another burden on societal? Prisons are extremely expensive to operate. The old adage is it’s cheaper to pay for someone to attend an Ivy League school, including an apartment and all necessary food and supplies, than it is to incarcerate them. Justice was served here. By the way, the tear drop can mean MANY things. The whole “proof of kill” is a west coast gang thing. Elsewhere it means prison sentences, or a loved one’s sentence, etc etc. In short, it sounds like you don’t know much of anything and should spend some time learning maybe

Very interesting interview. I’m really enjoying this channel. Note of advice to the creator; one of the fundamental principles of recording interviews is the 180 degree rule. Keep both cameras on the same side of the subject’s face and cuts between cameras will be more smooth. It’s very distracting to have him looking different directions in each angle.

I thought about that too, the moment he said that. What I really wanted to know is how they got away with the cars when they used them instead of parting them out at the chop shop. With cops having automatic electronic license plate readers, it’s so easy for them to catch a vehicle driving by them that is stolen! I really wanted to know what the thieves would do with those license plates and VINS to make the cars not hot anymore, because they were taking them to the damn border to transport drugs after all!

Do I wish I can change what I did and do I feel remorse for those victims yes but on the other hand utilizing what I went through to help others change is what I hope to do. The courts gave him ISP probation because, they have no evidence that he injured or killed someone, they want him paying restitution, and they don't want to pay to incarcerate him. Mostly they want him to pay restitution. He's right, the Colorado courts give special privileges to active members of the military and veterans. I saw it. The F-150 is and has been trackable for years. It has constant communication with the app and GPS. The owner can see it on a map. I am shocked they know how to drive the manual transmissions on the larger trucks. When he jumped out and confronted the cop, all I could think was that if it hadn't been a cop, things would probably have gone so much worse. The fact that the state says you can use pew pew force to stop a car thief has always seemed like it would be a deterrent. When the thieves are trying to get your car out the front gate, they are on tape the whole time and I would think most families would be out there chasing them down at 3200fps. Thankfully there are a lot more good people than bad people.
