They've hired more people to analyze data from that one store than a normal grocery store has total. They're not trying to replace normal stores (at least not yet), they're doing it to improve their data mining abilities.

I wonder how well the system would do if two people go in seperately, one person picks up an item then walks around and hands off the item to their friend, both walk around a bit then leave seperately. My guess is the systems smart enough to know the trade off occurred. Id love to go to the amazon store just to test how well the system works in different situations hah

Giving up all your privacy for convenience. Not smart. Give an inch and they'll take a mile. This is going to cause humanity to go into captivity without anyone understanding until it's too late. If no one else is able to provide you food and the organization has a monopoly your only alternative is to grow your own farm, but where will you get supplies? Do you think their automated system will allow that to happen? Surely it wants what is best for you. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED BUT I CAN'T TELL YOU WHAT TO DO.

Well, here in Germany you have tons of old people who cant find their money in their purse. Families with little annoying kids and cashiers who haven't understood the system of contactless payment. In an Amazon store, i could just shop midnight or so or very early like 5am. And the solution for age verification to buy alcohol is very simple as well register with an id and no minors under 18 years are allowed in so you just need the staff restocking the things.

Stuff I buy is not obtainable in every corner store (at least not in Germany) so I have to go to the bigger mall-like stores, therefore, I need longer. If we had corner stores like in the US where you can buy almost everything I would switch as well.

I have social anxiety but i've always dealt with shopping, large crowds, and long lines in grocery stores; I've also been a cashier. it actually helps my anxiety knowing someone else can deal with my groceries. Being in a store and walking around people is what gets me going, so, uh, yeah??? That issue doesn't seem to be solved here, yet. The tech and ideation is really cool but MMMMMMM it's going to take a while to get there.

Being a tech freak for years this sounds like an awesome scifi idea but what happens with the jobs that will go missing in the future when this thing is applied on a large scale? A fully automated supermarket with robots doing the cleaning, putting products on shelves etc will save billions and will be a general manager's wet dream but even though i understand "its the way of how progress works" still society or even better government should provide answers and solutions regarding the large number of people that will be left without work

Def need to tell what information is being collected when customer enters. Probably female/male, age, weight, height, what model of phone or os etc Whether to allow or not to allow, should be an option. And I think there needs to be a law where customers who declines some private information or body keys etc used for convince, companies need to make other methods to use the same information or services as easy as possible. If reported and can see they had easier options to suggest, but didn’t choose to make it easier than should be charged high fine. It’s same as not making hill sides for physically challenged when entering store. Making barriers for customers to give up their private information.

Wear a headscarf and stand over the shelf so cameras cant see and get free shopping? Maybe cover the symbols with your hand when picking it up or pick 2 things up in one go or pick something expensive up and put something cheap back on the shelf so it thinks you put the expensive thing back. Just afew ideas I came up with just now. Theres probably hundreds more ways to decieve the system wish i had one near me lol would save so much money

Its a good concept and seems to be working, but they have to consider other things if it was to expand. how to handle coupons (if they make them or accept them), returns and mistakenly taken items (other than honor system and accept every return request without having to physically return them.). They also must work out if the cost of all the computational processing needed makes up for the reduce labor cost. I curious to see what happens to this concept in the future.

Walking out with more than you need is an impulse control problem true about all grocery stores. That's not Amazon's problem, that's the customer's. Shop on a full stomach and you should be fine.

Its scary to think about the data that can be collected from this store. Amazon can build a pretty good picture of who you are just from things like where you walk in the store, what you pick up and put down, what you buy. With i fo like this they would beable to give custom adverts to each customer

I just have a question about their suspicious technology: What if you where playing the very generous type of guy and picked up an item, so it will be charged on you, but you go on and give the item to your friend because he wanted you to give him a favor (weird kind of scenario but bear with me), so in that why what an evil friend; you paid for this stuff. So unless our dear friend Amazon is constantly keeping track of all the items circulating in their shop, that's a great way to charge your items on another person. Does someone have another explanation?

The price thing, I think that's kinda stupid. I worked in retail when I was younger, and found virtually no one didn't get an item because they found out the price when they were checking out. And in grocery stores, when have you ever done or seen anyone not get something because of the price. Sure it might happen 1 out of maybe every 300 or so people. But really? The part I would be worried with is it charging me for things I didn't get. That or your data being leaked. Other than that, I really wish Walmart would team up with Amazon on this.

In sweden they use a system in many Supermarkets that you can scan your groceries yourself, and you can in some stores even use your own cellphone to scan the barcodes on the different grocerios you buy and you don't need any physical contact with anyone, just enter the store and when you want something you just scan the barcode and put it in your bag and when you exit you have the automated cashier system, you just pay infront of a screen. Very practical and that is probably the reason why Amazon GO will never come to Sweden, cause they already have funtioning system that is way cheaper to maintain than this....

@Techquickie Well there’s always online ordering if you’re worried about what people might think. Anyway this is a cool idea but what if you don’t have an Amazon account? What if Amazon banned your account for no good reason and on a technical glitch and you can’t get an account again? Also they trust that people won’t take advantage if this system messes up and doesn’t charge you for something? People are selfish by nature. If there’s no consequence people will tend to do whatever benefits them at the expense of others. I’m thinking Amazon intends to make all Whole Food stores into an Amazon Go store eventually. I mean why else would Amazon buy Whole Foods?

I was in my local supermarket the other day that has a self service area that I never use... A person in front of me in the non self serve line kept the cashier talking for about 5 mins. While I'm normally very enthusiastic about new tech and AI, I am concerned about automation replacing workers in retail. There's a distinct possibility here of having too much of a good thing. Retail and fast food employs a good chunk of the US workforce. Where will they go once unattended POS becomes a more compelling option for retailers than hiring employees and paying them a fair wage plus benefits?
