That table top fan you have next to you is more interesting than you think! I took mine apart so I could show you how it works. The "four speed mechanism" releases any other button that was previously pressed down. Once a button is pressed a signal (voltage) is sent to the motor at the top of the fan. The oscillation motion is produced through the 4 bar mechanism. The last part of the video covers the gears that turn the 4 bar mechanism. The pin is part of the gears - when it is lifted the gears don't connect and the fan will no longer oscillate back and forth.

As a fan collector who has restored countless oscillating fans, I’m very impressed at the detailed accuracy of this video. I’ve seen many other videos attempting to explain the inner workings of a fan but they were all full of vagueness and incorrect information. Well done! (The model of the fan in this video appears to be an SMC 12” oscillating fan, just had to point it out since I recognized it by its looks 😄)

It depends on the four-hand mechanism. Some fans stays very long on the edge of the oscillation, so that's usually the best place.

but then you'd burn out the motor because of all the amperage flowing through, overclocking the fan to a degree that could fry every coil. motors are designed to only guzzle a certain amount of amps per second, just like they can only handle a certain amount of volts forcing it through. think of it like a heart: too much blood? the heart is unable to pump. too little blood? anaemia. heart too fast? heart attack. heart too slow? hypoxia be kind to fans. they are simple and delicate machines. their numerous blades? precious and delicate little things, that are so careful with air, only pushing it through, never forcing it. they sway and shake to express their joy at the world for letting them dance and sing better than any human could. be kind to fans edit: i took benadryl by accident

I thank you for this excellent educational video. Before watching your video, I had imagined that the side to side movement could be similar to the foot pedal movement seen in tailoring machines where the spinning movement of the flywheel can produce the up and down movement of the foot pedal (which is comparable to fan's side-to-side motion. I was not even aware that a thing called 4 bar mechanism existed at all. Your video was an eye opener..

@@kaarukun1867Do these. Look at the hole in the knob. If there is a screw remove it, then pull the knob. Or, try to turn the knob CCW or CW. It may be threaded. Or, look for a small hole on the side of the knob. If there is one, it may have a screw. Finally, give the nub a good pull. It may pop out. Don’t use too much force. These are the only ways to secure the knob.

ANNNNNND... if the oscillating fan gets stuck while trying to oscillate, the ball bearings get pushed in like a ratchet and make that ratcheting sound and your fan doesn't break. ...was waiting for that part to come up but it didn't so I'm adding my 2 cents.

A very useful explanation of how the gear mechanism for the oscillating motion works behind the scene. The ball dropped out when I first removed the gearbox and the fan stopped oscillating after that.

Worm gears have a large diff in gear ratio..i.e speed diff... Eg..while input speed is 750 rpm the output would be 30 or 50 rpm..+the diff in 3 modes of speed in terms of rpm might be noticable but due to the large step down in gears.. The oscilation speed change is not significat ... I guess....

Fascinating. I've just spent an afternoon servicing a couple of fans using the 'I wonder how this works and why have I got a spare screw left over method'. Even when you think you've got a pretty good idea what's going on, there are lots of clever ideas at play in one of these that you never even think about. Great video, many thanks.

I'm guessing those spring loaded balls also act as a clutch so if something obstructs the oscillating motion the gears don't break

Yep that’s correct. The “snap” you hear in the event of an obstructed oscillator is just the ball bearings hopping over the tabs in the worm gear. It’s does no major harm to the fan although it can put unnecessary load on the motor.

@@TheSuperFanMan Actually, there is no load put on the motor by forcibly stopping the oscillating motion. It is impossible to transmit motion to a worm gear in the opposite direction, and the reduction gears would break first, long before the motor speed is retarded.

Nicholas Lau you’re right that the worm gear system’s power transmission only works one-way as you mentioned. But that one-way system still can be slowed down. If there’s excessive resistance, worm gears will slow down and the motor will take on extra load. I’ve experimented this with fans before and you can certainly slow down a fan by obstructing the oscillator.

What I observed is that the oscillation speed remains constant irrespective of the fan speed (1, 2 or 3). Why is that ?

If you timed it you would most likely see that it is actually not constant. It’s just because the gears slow the oscillation down so much compared to the fan, the fan speed doesn’t make much difference to the oscillation speed.

chris toey if 2400 rpm at speed setting of 3 means 5 rotations per minute then 1200 rpm at speed setting 1 should mean 2 .5 rotations. But it doesn't slow that much.

you shouldn't really show public ip addresses in videos or movies ect, because many people might get the idea to try connecting to it causing a lot of network traffic. That's why movies / tv shows use invalid ip addresses like 712.542.612.124

It does change--it's just that the settings between low, medium, and high fan speeds aren't huge. Typical table fans have speeds of something like: Low: 950 rpm Medium: 1050 rpm High: 1150 rpm Note that these are both just about 10% increases in speed. A 10% increase in speed isn't that visually noticeable, but in terms of noise and energy requirements when you're already moving fast, it can be noticeable.

@@maxweelus I actually just timed my fan's oscillation speed. At low speed, one oscillation before changing direction was around 10 seconds, on high, this was brought down to 5 seconds. So, for my fan anyway, the oscillation speed is definitely not constant and it seems high is about twice the rpm, but according to Karl's comment, this may not be the case
