She studied meteorology at the University of Miami and atmospheric science at North Carolina State University, but did not know that mapping and forecasting sea ice for safety and navigation was a thing she could do. And here is what I want to say: This was an absolutely incredible experience. The Navy personnel and Academic Research Scientists who kept me safe were incredibly professional. Every person I met was exceptional. Also, can I just say that the experience of going underway in a submarine was INCREDIBLE. I'm still trying to decide how I want to release the footage (when I receive the last of it after it's been OPSEC cleared). Right now I'm leaning towards a series of videos similar to a Smarter Every Day Deep Dive on the submarines. The name is certainly fitting! I've also given a lot of thought to recent events here at home and around the world. It occurs to me that the US Navy brings stability and security to the world in a very unique way these days. I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to meet these individuals so I now know how professional these people are. I also want to say thank you to people who support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. Patriotic for sure, but I don't see how it's blind ? He literally talked about Coronavirus, which is arguably a big failure in management in the us (just looking at the number of cases), and George floyd, who became the latest symbol of a long running issue, and how the USA didn't manage to get past race. I would also argue it's a symptom of the failed war on drugs, leading to the militarization of police and this constant stand off they are in. Anyway, mentionning these 2 subjects immediatly refers to tons of stuff where the US isn't perfect at all. As for the patriotism part, well, is it really that unjustified ?

I was thinking the same thing. People from warm & tropical climates do not realize just how frigid -30 degrees really feels, because it looks peaceful & looks are deceiving. Generally, unless you are talking to other professionals, you need to set the bar low when talking to other people. Then based on their responses you can raise the level of techno speak. Especially when speaking with the media. Most of the media are looking for a story or a headline where the facts or details aren't always important or the reporter just doesn't have a clue so sometimes you need to choose your words carefully.

Yeah it's always cool to see his interactions with people on a highly technical level. It always starts out super general because the people are so used to having to be simple and general with their conversations. But it quickly becomes apparent to them that Destin actually knows specifics about the fundamental physics/math/mechanics etc within a few mins and then their eyes light up. And they can really talk intricately about their area of expertise and the passion shines through.

It's often challenging for scientists to know how much to "dumb down" their explanations of what they're working on. My field is protein biophysics and I usually can't discuss the topic at any depth, even with co-workers who should understand. Another thought, "So many young people are in the streets upset about various issues in this pandemic, George Floyd, and anarchist driven moment. If they could only see the opportunities being missed to make meaningful differences in other ways, like those you are presenting." There was a Navy Nuclear Propulsion interest meeting at my school the other week and my quick practice ASVAB says I should be qualified for it. In the event you do end up seeing this comment, do you have any advice for going through A school and prototype? I've always had the curiosity and passion for math and science but I've struggled to keep above an 85 in classes related to those topics.

@@andrewshehan6154 if physics, heat transfer and fluid flow and thermodynamics are something you are naturally interested in, then go for it. But it is a very hard path. Keep in mind that I went through the Navy Nuclear Propulsion program a long time ago. My test results in boot camp indicated that I satisfied the program requirements. Math has always been easy for me, so I signed up early for the program and for the great adventure called submarines. But Nuclear Power School and Prototype both required a LOT of after hours study. Then came submarines. Being a nuke on a submarine was a lot different then the fleet Navy. Underway there are four people in the Maneuvering Room, three enlisted and one officer, all Nukes. The atmosphere was much more casual than the fleet officer-enlisted setting. I enjoyed my time in the Navy and am proud of it. I left the Navy and immediately went into commercial Nuclear power. So the Navy nuke training set me up for life after the Navy. If you are comfortable with this stuff, go for it. Good luck!

I was going to comment something similar. Conversation with Andy was interesting from a communication perspective since Andy seems constantly surprised by Destin's comprehension and ability to relate complex topics, but almost seems to have some sort of block preventing him from loosening up. No insult to Andy of course, but it's interesting to look at the fact that somebody who is brilliant in a sort of niche scientific field might have difficulty communicating their knowledge or an explanation of their knowledge to normal people. Tl;dr Destin is a legend at taking complex topics making them understandable to normal people.

My grandpa used to do what you do, he used to be a photographer in weapons testing and development as well as a liaison between lockheed-martin and the US gov't testing and developing those aircraft during vietnam and the cold war. He worked in alaska testing weapon and aircraft function in extreme cold weather and would go to Yuma to do those same tests in extremes on the opposite side of the environmental spectrum. Seeing the landscape and hearing you talk about the cold--he told us about how some days in the winter it was so cold, they had to hook up massive heaters to the helicopter engines in the hangar, and they had about a full minute to get the helicopter out of the hangar and get the turbine started and after about a minute if you couldn't get it started it was too cold to run. The turbine would slow down and eventually wouldn't want to turn anymore and they'd have to roll the heli back into the hangar and on a heater to heat for another 30-45 minutes again before they could make another attempt to turn it again. It's insane to think about the temperature physics at play with that. It can be so cold outside that the cold can suck 45 minutes of heat out of a massive turbine in such a short period of time.

I was going to mention this. @@EggBastion he talked about why several times, it's because the young ice hasn't been destroyed by a summer melt or winter storm so there are no pressure ridges. The new ice is smooth enough to land on without much extra work (leveling). The how would indeed be very carefully, but I would guess that it can also be just as thick as the old ice. The issue is last year's ice disrupting the surface, not the thickness; once it's frozen, it's frozen. That's why they have to pay attention to where the runs are happening, and how deep into the old ice they extend

@@alanmtz8054 Yeah, I'm sure he just didn't notice. I don't think it had anything to do with not wanting to move though, because in that kind of cold you have to move in order to stay warm. Standing still is not going to increase your body heat the way that moving around will since it circulates blood and creates heat via friction with clothing. He was probably just focused on why he was there and didn't notice the gesture, but you can't deny it was super awkward to watch and must have been more so for Destin XD

Not a seawolf class sub. Its the Los-Angeles fast attack USS TOLEDO (SSN 769). We only have 3 seawolf class subs and 2 of them are cannibalized for parts, so that the 3rd one can do missions once in a blue moon. -Petty Officer Roden

As somebody else already said, it's a Los Angeles. The Seawolf has a different shaped sail from the LA boats, part of which wouldn't easily be visible with the ice. The forward most part of the sail has a curve to it as it connects to topside. But your statement on classified material is still true.

I found this very interesting as I was in a submarine during ICEX '89. I only got out of the boat for about 10 minutes, so I wasn't even aware that there was an ice camp nearby. I just knew it was cold. I look forward to seeing the rest of this video series to see what was going on outside of my view.

All Admirals/Generals that I've listened to have been incredibly articulate. I was in the Reserve Officer Training Corps for several years. I noticed that positions held by the officers I encountered made them wise beyond their years! They really have a hand on life and learned how to present themselves.

I served under that man when I was a Navy SEAL ten years ago and he's one of the most influential people that I've ever met. He helped peaceably resolve a naval standoff between our ship and an Iraqi warship so that no one was killed.
