The video walks through the non-linear process that led to my thesis project. Thank you HP for sponsoring today's video.

Love it! It’s amazing how you shared processes in a clear and helpful way to let us try those exercise you did it. Keep going, I think it’s quite unique what you do here. It’s not just about tips, it’s a deeper explanation of creative exercises. Love it how you study Mies’s grid and people performing into the space :) Looking forward to see the next part! Danila

Ah, the overly verbose explanations we have to use for our school presentations and research versus explaining it in layman's terms for the general public. Good times. I really enjoyed the video and projects you shared. That was a really cool video project. The only critique is I felt a bit misled by the title because I thought you were going to speak more about the research process and how you find inspiration and information from it. Regardless, I'm looking forward to seeing all the work you've created which led you to your thesis. On another note, I was at that 2015 bienniale in Chicago, and now I'm watching your videos. Funny how our shared interests indirectly links us once again. Serendipity in action my internet and architecture friend.

@@TheDanilampis Thank you!! I was actually originally going to make a "how to do an architectural thesis" type video with a list of points but pretty soon realized that what's more interesting and helpful to capture is the indirect / non linear journey of a thesis project... Design research is a beautiful thing and it would have been unfair of me to dumb it down into a simple set of points!
@DamiLeeArch
@DamiLeeArch 2 роки тому
@@tomviethoang Ahh cool! Internet is truly the best tool for serendipity. (I hope chicago has another biennale, I love that city.) Yeah actually as I was editing this video, I was hoping that I'd captured more about the research process itself, but I was having a hard time describing it in a succinct way that would also be interesting in a video format. I would like to make a video like that, and maybe it'll get captured in Part 2!

I love that!!! There's so many interesting / important ideas in academia that it's a shame it stays in that realm. I am fortunate in that I have a circle of friends who are not in architecture. Many times, I was shocked to find that words I used so commonly were made up / nonsense to people outside the field, haha. Lots of unlearning happened for me after graduating.

Such a fantastic presentation of the real struggle of developing an idea for an architectural thesis project. I wish I had the comic strip assignment for mine. Seems like it really forces you to break through all of the theoretical jargon and distill the ideas into an easily digestible road map of when you hope to take your ideas. Looking forward to part 2!

I have thought about this a lot when I started making youtube videos. There's so many interesting ideas in architecture (and in other fields) but there's a language barrier that makes it hard to access for the masses. This one is a small example but I just can't help but cringe when I look at some of my old writing. 😆

typological" refers to the study, classification, or categorization of architectural forms, building types, or design patterns based on their common characteristics and functions. It's a term used to describe the analysis and understanding of different building or design types within a specific context or culture. The word "cannibalism" is generally understood to refer to the act of consuming the flesh or organs of a member of the same species. Doesn't make sense to bring those words together.

your discussion path bounces between a labyrinth and a maze, which is close to representing your creative process, if your Part II segment follows this "pinballing" you will help us better appreciate your creative struggling, ... please feel brave to talk about what inspirations occurred and what failed, please talk about waiting periods (when you could not proceed), and whether you had to retrace your steps, .. look forward to your Part II
@DamiLeeArch
@DamiLeeArch 2 роки тому
Did I mention labyrinth / maze on my channel? I was so intrigued by the process itself, that they became central concepts in my thesis project. Also, yes, the "pinballing" is something I'd wished I'd captured more of in this video as I was making it, but found it quite challenging to describe, especially in video format that's supposed to be engaging / interesting for people. I definitely hope to capture more of it in Part 2!!

it is difficult to avoid mind reordering when describing a creative process in retrospect as opposed to describing in prospect because of the mind's tendency to re-order chronological sequence or priority sequence, ... perhaps, a tutorial format, or say a Q&A format with say a colleague, perhaps later on, if you have the time to do this, will help us (the struggling lay public) better appreciate the prospective issues,

As I'm also a researcher before, the replacing of academic style writing part makes me laugh, it's true that academic writing is not engaging for common readers, look boring and harder to read, we human brain like to see some personality, open ended, encourage communications and even better if it can be story telling style of writings.

16:05 It would be more understandable to the typical city dweller if it was written more like this. What I wrote is still far to cerebral (too many big words and too long) for our soundbite culture. "It's important to create a beautiful and user friendly environment unique to the complex and dynamic nature of our urban neighborhoods without destroying the sense of home for the residents. Typological cannibalism uses shock value to create a sense of discomfort, self awareness and a feeling of alienation in the new environment. Hopefully leading to new stronger and more integrated relationships. Sustainability starts with the people." - me 🤣 Better might be: People like to be proud of their home. Typological cannibalism will wake them up

Using images of emaciated and starving African children as props to elicit emotion is a harmful and offensive form of racism. It reduces the humanity of these children to nothing more than a means to an end, and perpetuates harmful stereotypes about African people. It is important to be respectful and considerate when using images of others, especially when it comes to sensitive topics such as poverty and suffering. It is never appropriate to use images of vulnerable individuals for personal gain or to manipulate the emotions of others.
