Breaking Bad is an American neo-western crime drama television series created and produced by Vince Gilligan. The show originally aired on AMC for five seasons. The series tells the story of Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a struggling and depressed high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with lung cancer. Together with his former student Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), White produces crystal meth to secure his family's financial future before he dies.

This show is a great example about how "tension" doesn't have to come from a "we need to save the world" idea. I felt more tension when Hank cornered Walt and Jesse inside their own RV than in just about any moment in cinema history. What matters is not stereotypical grand consequences, but a fine layering of character, motivation, and consequences

@man Breaking Bad is that rare T.V. show where it just kept getting better before it's season 5 peak, which also happened to be the final episode. It started off intriguing and just kept getting better and better. Game of Thrones on the other hand has turned into Dexter, where it was great for the first 4 seasons, but then became spectacle badly written garbage following season 4, albeit still being entertaining in it's own right.

@Midnight_Rider96
@Midnight_Rider96 5 років тому
@J Wil that's more Freudian psych than philosophy. I think that particular part statement is wrong; the seat of human problems is that we desire evil. We are often selfish, prideful and self destructive. We have conflicting desires for selflessness and selfishness. This is often what causes mental illness. Pure psychopaths don't have anxiety because they have no internal conflict, it's all selfishness. Saints have anxiety because they are not pure saints and have a constant struggle against the dark corners of their hearts, as well as the moral darkness of the world around them. Many people are somewhat oblivious, and feel that conforming to social expectations is all they need to do, but realize later in life that social expectations can't be the standard because they change over time.

Isn't that a flaw, though? I recently did my first rewatch and have so many good things to say about it, but realized that one thing that is so important to this show is the tension. Some movies/shows I can watch over and over again and even knowing exactly what will happen next doesn't take away from it. With this show, it feels like a whole bunch of waiting. I know I'll rewatch it again because it's still some of the best television produced in my lifetime. I just also know that some of the scenes that kept me on edge are boring now because the waiting is such a key aspect in this show. That's why I think this is a sign of a flaw if you look at this series as anything else beyond a one time experience.

@@chriswalkey2050 I wouldn't file that under Gus getting stupid, I see it as following all the way through to the cornerstone of his character's motivation. That motivation was observed oh-so-wrongly in BCS S5 by Juan Bolsa when he was trying to convince Lalo that he's getting worked up over nothing, as Gus is "all business." Gus's business success and life weren't derailed by his lust for vengeance. The business was only a tool in his playing the (very) long game in achieving that vengeance. @Niranjan Rajesh 5 foot girl was exactly what this video was saying not to do. The term Deus ex Machina should be renamed "Arya becomes the Flash for 5 minutes." Since, _Deus ex Machina_ is when some new event, character, *ability,* or object *solves a seemingly unsolvable problem in a sudden, unexpected way.* It's often used as the solution to what is called "writing yourself into a corner," where the problem is so extreme that nothing in the established setting suggests that there is a logical way for the characters to escape. If a bomb is about to go off, someone finds a convenient bomb-proof bunker in easy reach. _Or Arya conveniently uses new, unforeshadowed sonic speed to match her silent footsteps on the snow, to become invisible and undetectable in order to get past the White Walkers._ Even though she was nearly caught by zombies in the library half an hour before.

He tells Jesse "I am awake" and he tells Skyler "I was really... I was alive". So yeah, he was doing it for himself, not to kill or be mean, but to feel awake and alive for the first and last time in his short life. On that score, I admire him, despite the collateral damage. And I loved him for saving Jesse in the end. Somehow he was more real than any TV character before. Breaking Bad is the best TV series ever written and I'm grateful I got to see it in my life time.

This is a great analysis of his character. Walt is definitely a terrible person. He has a huge ego, is super irresponsible, and is willing to ruin the lives of innocent people to get what he wants. But, at the same time, I don’t think he is evil either. He is not sadistic and doesn’t enjoy killing. And when push comes to shove, he also always puts the lives of the people he cares about above his own. He is selfish and selfless at the same time.

If GoT writers did only a quarter of Walter White's character development on Danaerys , it will be more satisfying than the "snap" she had during the 5th episode of season 8. Walter White's development is a journey. Danaerys is teleportation.

I think it's fantastic creative advice aswell tho. For anything really. Want people to listen to your album? Put all your efforts in the first seconds to be intriguing, captivating and eventually those will become iconic given that the rest of your music delivers. Many artists don't understand or pay enough attention to that, they think about depth, style, quality of craft first and foremost, and sure you should worry about that like hell, but in a world of talented people where you have to stand out, you've got to take care of your façade, make sure that you catch the attention of the sleepiest of eyes.

I suppose that is kind of a metaphor for his family, right? He was so wrapped up in building his empire, that he neglected his family. He should've been a better father to Walt Jr and Holly. Should've been a better husband to Skyler. He wasn't there. He was out robbing a train or cooking meth. All of this comes at a peak moment when Holly starts crying out for Skyler in that gas station bathroom place. Walt kind of realizes that in his mad scramble for power on account of his ego, he had neglected and completely drove away the one thing he really cared about. When he comes back from New Hampshire, the house and the pool and completely disheveled and barren. Just like any other abandoned house except for one thing which informed everyone who walked in of what had happened there: HEISENBERG... spray painted on the walls, in yellow, the colour of danger (in the show at least)

The thing they said about Gus’ downfall being based on emotion was so gratifying for me because thats exactly why I loved how it played out so much. Just like Walter, his pride was his downfall. Going to Hector himself was an unnecessary risk, and if he had no personal connection to hector it’s one he wouldn’t have taken. However his pride and his need for revenge against the husk of what used to be a man who he hates was the reason he went there personally.

One brilliant aspect of Breaking Bad was how as the story progressed, the current problem that pushed them to the edge just kept going from worse to worser. I remember watching it and thinking that I wish we were still at last week's level of FUBAR.

I am one of those dudes that defended season 7 of GoT. But after the last season, I felt betrayed. I recently finished Breaking Bad and the flow is very smooth compared to Game of Thrones. They just wanted to put a lot of great scenes at the expense of a great storytelling.

Hey man, I think you're on to something very special here. The big request is for It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, I believe that is the longest running live action prime time comedy show and the way it approaches the many taboo subject matters is ripe for plundering. The other requests would be for 30 Rock , The Simpsons (that writer's discussion hosted by Conan is hilarious), and Arrested Development (perhaps the most joke dense show in history). Thanks for making these videos, they're extremely insightful.
