Same. Had this small detail not been there, it would have been awesome but would have only met my expectation. Having that in the middle of the ride threw me into full suspension of disbelief, putting me fully into the experience of the movie I loved. That one little detail brought the whole section of the park alive for me, and it actually brought a tear to my eye as I left for the first time.

I have a condition where my brain does not combine the vision from right and left eyes together. (Think split screen TV seeing the same pic) This also means I dont see in 3d like you can and I cant watch 3D movies. Basically I see in 2d, judging distance by comparing size. I.E. larger things = closer and vice versa. Now in 2017 I was extremely excited to ride the ride the first time! Then I saw the glasses and my heart just dropped to the floor cause as you now know, I cant see 3D. Well I went on the ride anyway. I honestly dont know what or how Disney has created such magic.... For the first time in my life I was able to see what you see. I saw in 3D. I was so moved I cried. I'm sure the two cast members that saw me afterwards thought I had been scared. It took me a good hour to recover enough to explain to my husband what I saw/experienced. The only time I get to see what you see every days is during a 5 minute ride over 900 miles away. Thank you Disney, for giving me a chance to see.

I’m in the same boat. Typical 3D movies don’t do much for me, they’re always a bit blurry. I can switch dominate vision between my right or left eye but that only changes what side the ghost image is on. I don’t mind going to most of Disney’s 3D attractions with friends and family, because I can still enjoy the other immersive elements but it’s frustrating knowing I’m missing out on the full experience. I’m really glad new attractions (like Rise of the Resistance) are leaning more towards large high def 4K graphics instead of 3D screens.

I kept pondering after the ride and wondered if I had a simple brain because of how well they tricked me. It felt real even though I knew how it worked. You know, I’ve always wondered why Disney doesn’t have their own multiplex cinema inside the Magic Kingdom that exclusively plays Disney films. Feels like there’s a lot they could do with that as far as tailoring the experience to each specific film or franchise. I guess theater-studio ownership laws make it difficult.
@syzer3056
@syzer3056 Рік тому
For that they would for sure have to charge at least $100 a person or more to cover for the build, power consumption and maintenance.
@IroAppe
@IroAppe Рік тому
@@syzer3056 I'd say even more. Because a whole movie with Avatar technology costs hundreds of millions of dollars, and usually that gets made again by being watched worldwide in cinemas. ====== Hindsight: This is long. But I'll keep it in here for people who might be interested into the numbers and how it could work out, and also why not. It was fun a few hours to fiddle around and learn about the numbers of Disney World and how Mathematics and Economics are connected. ====== Let's see, and get some data. Epcot has about 12 million visitors per year. Ok with that, it would probably attract more people from other theme parks to Epcot. Let's take the overall number: The resort gets about 60 million viewers per year. Let's half that to 30 million to get a realistic number, because probably not everyone would go there (-), but it would also attract a lot more visitors (+), so that might be a good estimate. Hmm - looking at the high price - half it again to 15 million visitors for that specific attraction. Avatar 2 did cost 350-400 million dollars, let's take the lower number of that. Flight of Passage did cost 200 million dollars to build. Now I don't really know much about maintenance, power and operation costs. Mhm, let's just take a wild guess: 3 million dollars per year. 350+200=550. Let's just make it 555, if I forgot something. Alright: 555/15=~37$. Wow, that's not all too much. Maybe I overestimated how many people would go there. Ah yes, right, it can't handle 15 million people per year on that ride. Of course. Now I have to find out the capacity. Give me a second... 1440/hour. Since I couldn't find any information when and how long the ride is under maintenance, let's guess 2 weeks, so 365-14=~350 days. Epcot is opened from 8:30am (early access for resort guests) to 9:00pm, that's 12.5 hours. So: 1440*12.5*350=6.3 million per year. But I forgot, that of course that capacity will drop. Let's take the usual length of 1.5h for a movie plus 15 minutes for cleanup or something in between, and calculate again. 12.5h / 1.75h = ~7 screenings per day. According to parktourist: "The Avatar Flight of Passage has four theaters with six rows per theater and can accommodate up to eight riders per row, for a total of 192 people at once." 192 people per screening. So: 7*192=1344 visitors per day. 1344*350=470,400 visitors per year. That changes everything. Because 555,000,000/470,400=1180$, if you want to make it back in 1 year. Let's cap that to 100$, then it would be 11.8 years to make it again in revenue. But you'd need a new movie at least every 3 years to keep people interested. So it's 200 (building cost) + 350*4 (movies) + 3*12 (operation)=1,636 million dollars for those 12 years. Let's calculate the ticket cost: 1,636,000,000/470,400*12=290$. That's too much, have to cap it again to 100$. ALRIGHT: It's impossible: I have entered this formula into Wolfram Alpha: (200 + 350*x/3 + 3*x) / (0.4704*x). The LIMIT of the function is 254.393$. That's this inverse exponential nature. That means: Even if we consider an INFINITE amount of years, even then the best we can do is a ticket price of ~255$ per person. And then it's break even. Wow, I've never had that and applied Math that way. So it means, it is not possible to get a price of 100$ given the costs that it takes and the capacity that one Flight of Passage theater has. So: What if we build 2? Or instead of more guessing, let's solve this equation again, and set a realistic approach of 21 years: (200*x + 350*21/3 + 3*21*x) / (0.4704*21*x) = 100. The answer is ~3.38. So let's assume 4 theaters: ~90$. Bingo. With the numbers of theaters we can scale it up. But what would the investment sum be for those 4 theaters and 7 movies over 21 years? 3.5 billion dollars. So yes, with 3.5 billions dollars and a ticket price of 100$ it could be done. The problem probably is, that I was way optimistic about visitor numbers. How many would really do this? Aren't 1.5 hours too exhausting? And also, a movie has more than just you flying around. The whole concept is questionable. If it's not a concept that consistently draws people in for 7 movies over 21 years, filling 7 screenings per day from morning to evening, it also wouldn't work. These questions should be asked in the beginning. However, I learned something today. That was fun, and gives insight into what is possible, and what isn't. But: What is possible in theory, might not work out in practice.

There is nothing like this ride anywhere. Maybe the Harry Potter ride film is on the same level, but something about this ride is amazing. I'd wait two hours for this ride without even thinking. One thing I always tell people when they ride it is when they're at the rest scene (you'll know when you're there), take a second to stick your head out and look in all directions. Amazing how many people they fit in there. Sure it doesn't have the speed or thrills of a true roller coaster, but this ride is beyond anything. When we went in May 2019, we had a fastpass for this ride later in the day and did the River Journey at rope drop. Since everyone was at this ride waiting in line, we high tailed it to Everest after River Journey and rode it over and over. Literally six times before the Pandora crowd made its way over to Everest. Then we came back later at night to ride this again.

Something I noticed while riding: right before the ride starts, you're told to look at the screen on the front of the seat itself that shows science stuff. Then when the ride starts, the room goes dark and a strobe light that blinks from somewhere near the screen temporarily blinds you to hide the transition of how they change the sci-fi facade into the projection screen. I'm still not sure how they do that.
@Telris86
@Telris86 3 роки тому
The wall in front of you simply moves/tilts upwards and that's it. The strobe lights are to distract you so you don't notice it as well as to prevent your eyes from adjusting to the darkness. Additionally colored lights are projected onto the wall which are also the first sequence on the actual screen to make the transition even more seamless.

Ryan Petersen before the park officially opens, cast member carry a large rope to contain the crowd until a specific point. They then drop the rope, and you go to the ride.. so, basically park opening
@chrisbyrnes5451

Ryan Petersen we generally get to the parks 60-90 minutes before official opening time. If the crowds are deep, the manager will allow guests into the park a few minutes early. Coaster Labs There are actually 10 projectors per room. 3 stacked in the middle and 1 on each side rotated vertically. All of that x2 (one for each eye). Also, the back of the ride cannot move up and down, it is purely fixed in place but allows rotation as the front half moves. It’s hard to tell that the back doesn’t move if you’ve only seen it from the guest’s perspective but behind the back wall there are giant bearings that hold one side of the platform while the other side moves up and down.

The first time I rode FOP I had to look away as I felt intense motion sickness once it started to move (I don't usually feel nauseous on rides with the exception of the Forbidden Journey at Islands of Adventure). I have never felt this nauseous on any attraction ever and when I got off had to rest on one of the benches they provide immediately at the exit of the theater and said to my partner (who thought it to be the best ride experience he has ever had) that I would never again go on it. That night I woke up at 2AM annoyed that I did not experience what others experienced and made the decision to go back to Animal Kingdom equipped with Drammine and it was truly the most amazing theme park experience I have ever had and the best decision to give it a second go. Did again feel a little squeezy but nothing compared to how I felt the day before. I literally can't wait to travel back to WDW all the way from England just to experience this ride!
