hello! i have a few questions regarding your comment: 1) what is a shadow flat? just the shadow color in a multiply layer? 2) how to do the shadows and light in warm tone? what if the shadows and light are on layer settings like add or multiply, how do you make warm? 3) on the soft airbrush light, if the focus is the face, will the airbrush be all around the face? or gradient from chin fading to forehead, etcetera?

@@solandis0175 Hello, as an annotation they are only my perceptions, I don't have the truth and if I wrote a lot is because I drank a lot of coffee. 1. A flat shadow is simply a linear shadow (without gradient) and with a single value, as I said this step is optional and depends on the scene you are drawing (if in the composition "the light is the protagonist" there is no point in using this shadow, the best in this type of scenes is to use a layer to darken the whole image and in the following steps just draw the lights). NOTE: Here let me make you a note, it's ok to use the blend modes of the layers but sometimes we make the mistake of focusing too much on them and use the black color in a layer with multiply blend mode, it's a good method but I would encourage you to stop using it because instead of familiarizing yourself with the color palette to find for example a dark red you go the easy way and just choose black and paint on a multiply layer (see the problem, you are not learning the value of the red color that should be used to give you a certain effect of shadow, light, etc). 2. If you study shadows and lighting theory you will know that even if there is a shadow it can have a warm or cold tone, the warm tone is more towards the red/orange/coffee colors and the cold blue/grey, one way to understand this is to see it like the white balance (wb) value in a camera where depending on the WB value will be the tone of the image to be taken. Now about how to apply this effect with a simple layer and a solid color with the desired tone and obviously controlling the opacity (can be 5% or 12%) you can make the effect, I personally use gradient maps in light mode and that serves me to change the tone of the image and an opacity of about 12-15%, for this same reason is that I say that Rella uses gradients map (to modify tones of flat lights, flat shadows, general composition and final composition). 3. About this point and the others above is complex, because everything depends on the composition that the artist is looking for, for example an image with a close up to the face you can use a fine brush for areas with more details (I think that in this type of compositions he does not use airbrush), in a wider or full body image you use airbrush because we don't need a fine light that has to define a shape like a cheek bone so if you want the light to fall on the face you use it on the WHOLE face and splash a little on the chest or arms, I commented that he uses airbrush because it allows you a soft gradient/diffuse control of the light on the edges (but it is so subtle that it doesn't create multiple light values at most 2). Looking at it in perspective and as a conclusion if I had to define his lighting style it would be the following: "Rella works the light and shadows as if he was painting a grisaille, ONLY without grisaille which allows him to speed up his process and deliver a faster work at the same time that just shows that Rella had studies and lots and lots of practice with grisaille". So my friend, if you want to be like him study light and shadow theory, Hue Saturation Value, grisaille shading, grisaille coloring. And then with years of practice you will be able to omit grisaille in your process and paint like Rella, on this subject I recommend you this artist who also uses grisaille and I encourage you to pay his fanbox to see his files (I'm raising money to do the same xD): "kionaoki".

Also as I said in point 3, everything is very subjective, as you can see that Rella makes corrections of shadows and highlights at each step, so I don't rule out the use of a curves layer to adjust even more shadows and highlights. And if something is clear is that with artists there are no robotic steps or formulas, there are tools that they use and depending on the problem that presents the composition will be the tool used.
