I sort of agree with this, but just saying "it's cos it's Liverpool" is a bit lazy. It's because Liverpool have consistently over the last 5 years done their due diligence in scouting players, then giving them a reputation for not wasting money. People forget how bad Mane was for the 18 months before January this year, his underlying numbers were going down each season, specifically his pressures per 90 and his dribbling numbers. his success in the last 5 months were mostly down to confidence gained from winning big games with Senegal (which I still believe was a contributing factor to Salah's poor form) and a change in role for Mane playing more centrally. one stat that Mane has maintained in recent years is how many progressive passes he receives per 90 which shows his movement is still very clever and centrally he was able to utilise that well. But I don't believe Mane can play out wide anymore for Liverpool because his dribbles and pressures are down too much, which means he would be locked into only being this central player. So getting 40 million for a player who is regressing imo is good business and both City and Liverpool are heading into a new era (for the clubs) of playing with genuine out-and-out strikers. I really do believe that Liverpool in certain games (like against City) will still play roughly the same with a 4-3-3 and pressing high up the pitch with Jota, Firmino, Keita, Thiago and it will be fine. But against teams who are going to sit back and defend (like we saw from Wolves and Spurs) I think Liverpool will use a 4-2-3-1 with not only Nunez as an out-and-out striker but also Elliott/Carvalho, maybe even Firmino/Jota playing as a 10 behind Nunez which is something we havent seen from Liverpool before.

He's arguably the missing piece, but then you have to consider the loss of Mane being as huge as you've mentioned. So when we consider it more of a replacement than an addition that leaves all of the questions. I think him being 6'2 and having that aerial presence could be huge for Liverpool in the games that traditionally became a real struggle to break down, one issue with Liverpool could be that it's all a bit one dimensional at times. Although, Luis Diaz has changed that a lot, he takes full backs both ways incredibly well, I suspect Harvey Elliot will too, so while it's been really effective for Klopp, I suspect adding more strings to the bow can only be seen as a good thing. Overall, exciting transfer that with a 6 year deal protects the club, should it be the success they're expecting.

@husky2327
@husky2327 Рік тому
@@JamesLawrenceAllcott I agree with you both, whether Nunez will be a success is yet to be seen but regardless it’s smart business from Liverpool again. I think a natural regression can be expected from Liverpool especially after a very tough season where the boys have really pushed themselves, never mind the past few years of being the only English team capable of challenging Man City with limited resources. The fact that the club is putting their money where their mouth is this summer should help to minimise that regression, I think I speak for all Liverpool fans when I say I fully trust the recruitment team at the club after their form in the last few transfer markets. Having said that I really believe adding either a goal scoring midfielder or another defensive midfielder is also really important this window. A goal scoring midfielder would take a bit of pressure off of the front 3, which will be needed while they build chemistry and find their feet. We never replaced Wijnaldum and I think a player of his attributes is what we missed at the end of last season. Going for a defensive midfielder instead would give Klopp another option, we’ve seen him play a 4-2-3-1 at Liverpool before, particularly when he’s really going for goals and adding a solid CDM to sit next to Fabinho could give him an exciting prospect of playing 4 serious attacking threats which I think would give teams big problems. Klopps style of play has taken the league by storm since he’s joined, but the quality of the Prem is immense and it feels to me like teams are adjusting to his style, particularly the big teams. Maybe adding the versatility of playing a different formation might help to reduce that inevitable regression?

@Clayts Рік тому
Don’t think it’s any coincidence that they’ve signed a CF that will drift wide left. I think the idea will definitely be to get Salah central in the attacking transition, Trent wide right with Henderson/rcm getting out there. Also think the evolution you speak of has already began. LCM and 6 much closer together and carrying the defensive load (think Tchouameni links this summer) whilst RCM becomes more of a creative 8 (Elliott, Keita at times this year + Carvalho), the 9 then becomes much less playmaker and much more poacher - hence Nunez. The blueprint was already there this season with Jota and then Mane when he went central.

The primary concerns people have is that he plays in the Portuguese League and wondering if that’ll translate in the Prem but the Portuguese League has produced enough evidence of players killing it in the league and also killing it in the Prem and the big leagues. Ruben Dias bought directly from Benfica one of the best CBs in the league, Luis Diaz brought directly from Porto bossing it for Liverpool, Eder Militao bought directly from Porto for 50 million to Real Madrid and was a crucial player for them to win the CL and the La Liga. I'm glad you brought it up James, I think this transfer gives a sneak preview at Klopp and the team's thinking. I think he is our answer to beating a low block but also versatile enough to not hinder any goals in transition and opportunities created by counter-pressing. Robbo and Trent have been fantastic without an actual number 9 and Nunez will benefit both. Also, think this will make way for Elliot to pick up the space left outside the box and have someone to slip balls into as you suggested and it also means Salah won't get crowded out. Teams are likelier to double up on him when there is no one in the box to worry about. Nunez's presence changes that. I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out. That blew the prices of star players *way* out of propprtion this transfer window. 2- Yes it's a risk we're not used to Klopp making, and it's a lot of money, but Klopp never spent that much unless he and his staff *know* that he's probably gonna be a big difference maker. my perspective on this (as a Liverpool fan) is that it needs to be considered alongside the plethora of great transfers Klopp has been involved with since his arrival. out of the 10 most expensive signings under Klopp, only one hasn't seen a turnaround of ridiculous degrees (Naby Keita who has had his moments, but struggled to fully find a spot). Nunez may be the least proven of the bunch, but certainly considering how Mo Salah was received as unfit to be a premier league player due to his time at Chelsea, the progress Klopp and his training staff can achieve is simply mental. I don't see him integrating anywhere near as quickly as a Luis Diaz, which may bring him a lot of flack for underperforming, but his progress will certainly be seen as the season goes on. The expectations of a 23 year old player with only 2 years of top flight football under his belt might get to him and be heralded as a disaster, but I do think the ambition and risk outweighs the cost.

Hi James, great video. Liverpool have a great squad with quality forwards. The good thing is, as you mentioned that Jota is there. Jota is a great forward (and underated) plus Firmino in the middle which gives Nunez plenty of time to understand the Liverpool way. As you also mentioned Andy Robertson came in and spent a long time for his debut and hasn't looked back. I honestly believe that this isn't a straight swap for Mane (who was absolutely amazing and I'll miss him) but it's fresh blood, for a young hungry player who will show his worth. For low block teams, you have the likes of Elliott and new boy Carvalho who can drive at teams. Elliott was getting games before his horrific injury. He came back just as we had a settled 11 towards the back end of the season. Every purchase is a gamble but we have a player who was just hitting his peak at 22, is a great purchase. I think LFC already knew who they were getting as they had to buy Diaz early remember? Imagine a 4-2-3-1 with Thiago and Fabinho then Diaz, Salah and a choice of Firmino/Elliott/Carvalho and Jota/Nunez up top. I cannot see LFC buying players just in case other teams do (that's Mourinho old style). A six year contract means we have time to see how things are at three years.

I think with the sale of mane, minamino etc we will recoup a lot of the money paid for nunez (net spend legends I know) which will soften the blow to our transfer budget but also I think it has something to do with the supply and demand of strikers at the moment, especially young and exciting ones being very limited and unavailable this season. It is a lot of money but with the sales coming in and the fact that we haven’t entered a bidding war to get the price down and have 100% got our man 🤷🏼‍♂️ i’m not opposed to it - fingers crossed he does well for us and i’m sure he will

Great analysis James. Did touch on some of the critical yet forgotten aspects of this signing. I do think that there is an element of not letting other clubs get him. Plus the new sporting director might have a different approach to his signings. It don't think that there will be much change in the playstyle since we have tried crosses with jota and mane. Nunez need to add a bit to his game by moving inside, like Kane does. Here I feel like they could have spent the money on Kane who is proven but then again Nunez is young. I don't see a world where the signing doesn't work but it all depends on Klopp and his judgement. Now that we have tasted success, we as fans want immediate results but it could take a while.

I was convinced we were gonna see a lot more 4-2-3-1 this season, but when you set up that 4-3-3 it got the cogs turning. With that team you put out, I'd have put Jota in place of Diaz as first choice (those two rotating on the left and already being settled is why hopefully Sadio going won't directly hurt us too much). I say primarily Jota because he can cut inside and play a centre forward role already, he sort of underlaps Nuñez, who as you say has drifted to the left half space, and Robbo acting as winger. That's a lot of movement and a lot of shifting around but the players are each in familiar territory. Sounds like a tasty overload to me. Trent has been cutting in to midfield of late (for the footy manager types a sort of inverted wingback position) rather than being a winger on the other flank, but he could go back to wide touchline work. If not, he could be switching with Elliott who used to be a right sided forward before Klopp moved him to midfield. The other thought with Elliott, Jones, Carvalho, Bobby is their ability to play as 10s, so maybe that 4-2-3-1 shift could be coming. Fabinho played in a double pivot at Monaco, Thiago played in a double pivot at Bayern; Hendo, Thiago, Milner not getting any younger.... Interesting times. We'll see what pre season brings.
@w2l709
@w2l709 Рік тому
It's a bit of a difficult one because with a direct forward you need a midfielder to take that number 10 spot when attacking, but that needs Trent to play deeper to cover (like City's fullbacks) so you lose his crossing. Interesting to see how Klopp addresses it
@racerdeth
@racerdeth Рік тому
@@w2l709 thing is Trent has been doing that all this last season. He can still cross occasionally, just can't do it at the same time as Robbo. In some ways it's telegraphed the upcoming tactical shift, that he's cut in rather than got chalk on his boots more often.

I disagree that Darwin liking the left hand side is an issue for him because Salah already gets double marked which means it either leaves two defenders for Diaz/Nunez or leaves Salah 1-on-1 which we saw in his first season is deadly. Diaz also plays more wide than Mané/Jota which does give the room to Nunez. Also, with the acquisition of Carvalho we might see a 4231 with either him or Firmino in the 10 in which they can occupy that right side of the box. Is he going to drastically change the team like Harland will change City? I’m sure it can be agreed that Harland is going to get service, and is therefore bound to make an impact, but the question has to be if Nunez gets the same amount of service that Mane did, is he going to score more goals and elevate the team? Mane has been incredible, so how do you drastically improve on that. I guess the simple answer is if Klopp is advocating a €100m spend, he obviously believes so. I guess only time will tell.
