Both Democrats and Republicans are raising millions of dollars this election cycle to flip state legislatures and have an advantage in redistricting come 2021. Redistricting is the process mandated by the constitution to ensure fair representation as the population changes. When abused, this is called gerrymandering. These gerrymandered maps can discriminate on the basis of party, race or other pieces of identity politics. Watch the video to find out how gerrymandering works and why one expert called it "the biggest and boldest investment in modern American politics."

@Digong DU30 the United States is an Oligarchy/Plutocracy, the founding fathers were slave owning landed nobility that wanted freedom from the English King, the United States was founded in 1776 as a Union of States/Commonwealths (former Colonies/Provinces of the British Empire) and a Republic, not a Democracy, but because of the influence of Radical Popular Progressive Movements (Communists and Workers Unions) in the 1930s and the 1960s that pushed the Democratic Party to the Left, the United States was mostly a Democracy for those brief decades, but in 1980 Conservative Republican Ronald Reagan was elected US President as a reactionary reaction to the turmoil of the 1960s and the 1970s, especially the African American Civil Rights Movement and Anti Vietnam War Movement, and as a reaction to the decrease in the ethnic european population of the US from a high point of 83 % around 1923 until 1960 to below 66 % today in 2020, that began with the Hart Celler Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 (1968) that was passed by the 2 chambers of the US Congress when both chambers had Democratic majorities, the Neo-Liberal Economic Policies were introduced during the Ronald Reagan Administration and are still in place today, economic inequality in the US are back at the levels of before the crash of the New York Stock Exchange in 1929 and the resulting Great Depression of the Economy, both Political Parties in the US are in favor of Liberal Economic Policies, the super rich influence (have infiltrated and taken over) politics (politicians and officials) through universities, think tanks, Super PACs, law firms, mass media, lobbying, etc., the only real difference are social values, either Socially Liberal or Socially Conservative.

This is also happening for schools. In one small suburban city, there are 3 different public high schools with different rankings that students would attend depending on where they live in that small city. The line drawn does not make sense. In fact, I once taught at a school that protested very hard to redraw their current lines and avoided giving other students opportunities to attend their schools because of race.

What about the reasoning behind the Republicans? Why not explain that?
@geraldmaxwell3277
@geraldmaxwell3277 3 роки тому
Both sides do it. Republicans aim to create a few districts that pack in minority voters in the cities that vote Democrat. Just look at Houston. In some instances, they also merge some rural areas likely to vote Democrat like the border areas of Texas with the surburbs of El Paso and San Antonio that are predominantly Republican, keeping that region Red. But Democrats are no better. In order to dilute the Republican vote of rural Illinois, the suburban districts are often attached to major urban areas as is the case with all the suburbs of Chicago ,which are White and heavily Republican being in districts that stretch right into the center of Chicago, diluting their vote with the heavily minority areas of West and South Side. Maryland was heavily gerrymandered by the Democrats and is only rivaled by the nonsense Republicans pulled in North Carolina. So it is not just Republicans. Democrats are just as bad. In fact, they have made no secret that New Mexico will be gerrymandered after the census.They are literally crowing about it.

The video didnt really explain how gerrymandering affects seating vrs non gerrymandering, for idiots like me. Also how exactly do you buy district map change, i dont know. This video is somewhat left bias, it provides example for republican wrong doing but not democrat. Lastly, what do we do, outlaw it? I guess.
@lrdofmusic
@lrdofmusic 3 роки тому
I think it seems like there is a somewhat left bias in the video because the majority of gerrymandering--at this time--is perpetrated by Republicans. The video does say that both parties do it, but right now it is mostly the Republican party. Democrats in New Jersey tried to solidify their majority in 2018 by redistricting but liberal grassroots organizations protested, since it is a threat to democracy regardless of whomever it benefits--you can read more about that here: www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/12/14/18140773/new-jersey-democrats-gerrymandering-2018 www.nytimes.com/2018/12/13/nyregion/redistricting-new-jersey-democrats-republicans.html Note that those two sources--Vox and the NYT--are certainly left leaning (the NYT more so). But the journalism is still sound, in that they describe how NJ Democrats tried to gerrymander and the negative impact it could and would have. Gerrymandering works like this: say you have a geographic area-such as a state or county-that has 10 seats in the legislature (state, county, federal, etc). Each seat represents one district in this example, so we have 10 districts. Now lets say the districts are drawn along geographic lines, like blocks or cities or towns, etc. I think the example will work best with blocks, so that's what I'll use. Now, let's say the Democrats are redrawing the district maps. They can do away with the old way of just going by city blocks on a graph, and draw them such that even though everyone is in a district, most of the Republican voters are put into the same 3 districts. What ends up happening is that those three districts elect a Republican by a landslide. However, the other districts all have fewer Republicans in them, and as a result elect Democrats. Let's take it a step further by using percentages. Say our fictional district has 50% Democrat voters and 50% Republican. If the Republicans want to gerrymander, they can draw the maps such that 9% of blue voters (9% of the total, not 9% of the 50% which is 4.5%) and 1% of red voters are in districts 1, 2, and 3. 30% of the populace is in these areas, but they are heavily skewed with Democratic party voters--27% is in 3 districts. Now in the other districts they can draw the maps so that 3% or 4% of the district is blue, but 6% or 7% is red--meaning the district goes red, every time. So you have a populace that should be represented equally as 5 seats blue, 5 seats red, but they have 3 seats blue, 7 seats red. And they have a majority--both simple majority and 2/3rds majority. In practice, it's more complicated than that. And that is only one type of gerrymandering. But I hope this helped illustrate the concept.

@@kb_100 Wow. Arnold was great. Only one question, who decides how to draw districts?
@kb_100
@kb_100 3 роки тому
@@pancakes3250 as this video explains. In many states it's the state politicians who decide how the federal districts are drawn in their states. And they do this every 10 years. The last time was 2010 when Republicans won a lot of state seats and drew maps that favored them. Although the democrats did this in their states as well (MD for example). So the solution is to not allow politicians to draw district maps but instead have separate committee do it.
@pancakes3250
@pancakes3250 3 роки тому
@@kb_100 Thank you. Solution sounds good. Except who picks the committee. I take you solution and modify it. The committee is represented by population as a whole. If its more red, then more of the members, directly proportional, must be red. Until then, scrap the maps, and divide the district mathematically, geographically. At worst geometrically, straight lines. Thank you for replying.
