Netflix once flew high as the dominant force in video streaming. Today though they're facing increased pressures and competition, and to be honest… they kind of caused this mess. So why is Netflix struggling and how did they kick off this spiral?

What I really hate is how for months there will be nothing I even want to see, then multiple shows I want to see all get released back to back to back all around the same time, and if I don't literally binge watch an entire season within the first 48 hours Netflix considers that a failed series. I have a life outside of netflix, but even if I didn't, I don't like to binge watch everything all at once, I like to digest shows one or two episodes at a time and come back later. I like to watch as I'm getting ready for bed then turn it off when I'm ready to sleep. I hate knowing that they have this three season rule and they're just looking for excuses to cancel shows I love and that if I don't watch every episode right away they mark it against the show.

Welcome to the awards season treadmill. Movies have had that problem for ages. But of course movies (for most people) were a rare treat while Netflix is practically an always-on, so the problem is definitely more apparent (not to mention the time investment difference between a 1.5-2hr movie and 6-12hr season of a show). I've certainly noticed the "problem" myself on more than one occasion, though I've never much thought about what Netflix considers a "success". I just watch things when I feel like watching them, and I definitely prefer to binge things straight through rather than trying to keep 8 or 9 different shows' plotlines in memory week after week.

Also this is very old news by now but I was really pissed off the first time I watched Daredevil Season 2 and realised they weren't even bothering to give episodes proper endings, they just ended because you were expected to binge watch straight to the next one. Why bother with an episodic format at all if you're not going to treat episodes as standalone?

Pft when I saw Netflix’s “loss” in the graph I audibly scoffed. The hysteria surrounding it I expected a much deeper drop. It just seems like they’re plateauing right now. Today’s obsession with infinite growth is unhealthy and not even how markets work?? Believing in infinite growth is much more damaging in the long run than having a relatively steady subscriber base you can cater too.

I think the hysteria around it is the combination of it making the recent losses and then immediately reacting to undo all the things that made it popular to begin with (no ads, sharing passwords). They've shown that in the face of a pretty small loss they'll turn on their loyal subscribers to gouge as much money as they can. Most people would say that plateauing is not a bad thing, but to a publicly listed company, *everything* is about increasing profits. EVERYTHING. If the profits don't increase, the company had better have a model to achieve it, or they will lose value very quickly. It's just the nature of the stock market and capitalism :( it's self-destructive, but it's just how it works. Whenever a company publicly lists, I feel sad that they'll inevitably turn away from the good and become money hungry like everyone else.

@@aijx4223 Netflix killed piracy in the sense that instead of virtually everybody participating in torrenting of movies and TV-shows, it became the hobby of a relatively small crowd; the 'normies' finally got convenient access to all their media by paying a small sum, while the pirates kept going mostly out of habit. As such, access to the torrents became less mainstream and it also became somewhat less 'safe' on average to just go hunting for a download than it used to be, as there was less vetting of downloads and less chance of hiding in a crowd and access to the 'good' sites started requiring insider knowledge. The same happened to 18+ entertainment with the rise of the streaming websites catering to that crowd - but even that's started to see an uptick after the purge that happened there in 2020. Movies and TV shows have again started being shared more freely on torrents - and that's partially due to the fragmentation of the marketplace. The free streaming sites are taking advantage of that scene in order to provide their content - and while I find them quite handy, especially for finding sometimes obscure titles from the 70s, 80s and 90s, when they're wiped off the Net, we'll lose access to a lot of content that might not even be available anywhere else.

another factor to consider is piracy. with Netflix costing so little and providing so much, for many users it just wasn't worth it anymore. However, now that many users find themselves having to pay as much for streaming as they used to pay for regular cable TV, there's evidence to suggest piracy is having a comeback.

This issue is worse with HBO Max with WB Discovery pulling well-beloved shows, especially animated shows, to cut costs and dodge taxes, including shoes that were still airing. With these shows no longer on HBO Max, since some of them aren't on any other streaming service like Hulu or Netflix, this has resulted in more people resorting to piracy simply because they don't have any other choice This decision from WBD came as a shock to everyone, including the staff and even creators of these shows, as they were made aware of it not from the studio or corporate but from social media. This has made these people so mad, they're encouraging people to pirate the shows since it might be the only way people can watch the shows they worked their butt off to produce. It's so messed up

Its not even about the "costing so little" part. Its the "providing so much" part that really killed piracy. Chains like 7-11 have been proving for decades that people will pay a premium for convenience, and Netflix used to be _very_ convenient. Now, not so much. If you want to watch the latest popular show you have to figure out which of 8 different streaming services its on, get an account (or remember your account) navigate through 8 different and mostly terrible menu systems, hope you remember to cancel the service after you've watched whatever show you were wanting (and/or be willing to pay for a subscription you barely use after that one show ends). The list goes on and on. Or you just hit the currently-popular pirate site and have everything you could ever want to watch all in one place. Sure the "no cost" aspect is nice as well, but the main thing for most of the people who _would_ pay is the fact that its just.. available. (The people who wouldn't pay either way don't really count for obvious reasons.) I'm 100% confident that I have zero confidence in them finishing any series they create until it's actually finished properly. I expect cancellation. I don't know anyone who does have confidence in them finishing series. I'm sure that at least some of the people who leave are leaving because they aren't reliable, and they can come back any time to catch up on original shows that they DO finish. Come back for a month, binge three shows, leave again. They aren't creating loyalty. They also let us binge everything, which I like, but it's not as addictive or long term as making me wait 8 weeks to watch eight episodes... you'd need data from all the firms independently analysed to spot patterns like that though. Part of what drove Netflix's popularity in the early days was they way they were a 'one-stop shop' - they had everything, from lots of different publishers. Then a couple of years back the 'streaming wars' got into full swing, and anyone that wasn't Netflix that had stuff on Netflix realised they could make more money by pulling the content from Netflix and putting it on their own streaming service, which they take all the earnings for. Now we have an environment where there are dozens of different platforms, all showing only their own stuff, and all charging the $10 or $20 /month subscription for it, requiring consumers to sub to at least a handful if they want any decent choice - and they all wonder why suddenly the business model has hit a growth ceiling and it seems the party's over! Look at music streaming as a comparison. There are minor differences in content between the platforms, but essentially the platforms act as radio stations, buying content from the record companies and serving it up to their listeners. This means that regardless what platform I choose, I can basically listen to whatever I want to. Streaming services should not be the creators of content, because that gets us into the mess we are with TV/movie streaming that we're currently in. They should be deliverers of content, buying it from the publishers that make it and serving it to consumers, covered by the subscription fees. If the existing streaming services won't change their model to what Netflix used to be (and what music services like Spotify and Apple Music still are), then what is desperately needed in this space is an aggregator service - one account, one subscription fee, which gives you an account with all the majors and access to their content. Maybe plans could be priced by watch time, or per series etc. This would offer the level of choice that consumers expect, at the kind of price point they expect it, and would allow the industry to keep growing and serving up better content.

Yes!! The thing about Network TV was it was TV, if I had the antenna, I had all the channels available locally. And Cable, yeah you could add on premium channels or not but it was still all under your one 'cable' package. Netflix and early Hulu as well use to just pick up everyone's stuff. (Remember when Hulu was free and ads paid the bills for it to exist). So it was like digital cable in the early days, waiting for things to come to Netflix (or Hulu) if you missed it on regular TV. There was even a point where Hulu and Netflix had the same shows (Hulu got next day releases and Netflix had full season delivery once it wrapped on Network TV). And I wouldn't mind streaming to become more like THAT again....Like media can exist on multiple streaming services and I chose the most reasonable service as my streaming provider. Right now it's mostly an 'exclusive content war' and not about which service actually works the best. Now I have to get an HBO Max subscription to watch house of the Dragon, have to get a Disney plus subscription for Marvel Shows or Star Wars, have to get a Paramount+ subscription for star trek, etc etc. And it's annoying and getting expensive.

That's pretty much the same for everything. The difference with old-school TV is that if they didn't have something on you wanted to watch, you just walked away and did something else because you didn't really have much control over it. With Netflix (and other streaming services - they all have the same "problem"), you _know_ that the good stuff is in there somewhere so you just sit there scrolling trying to find the one you like among the 40 that you don't. Its not so much that Netflix Originals are more or less crap than anything else, its that they're presented to you all at once. Its essentially a rendition of the paradox of choice. Also, regular cable often has the same issue these days. With hundreds of channels (if you get full packages), there's almost always _something_ on that you wouldn't mind seeing.. but now you've got to sit there scrolling through hundreds of options looking for something that might interest you and hope its not just a rerun.

@altrag
@altrag Рік тому
That's not just a Netflix thing. Shows have been getting canceled for as long as shows have existed, and there's no end to the list of "cult classics" that weren't considered to have done well enough during their initial run to warrant more seasons then went on to have extremely high vhs/dvd sales, fan clubs, etc anyway. That said, the problem is becoming more wide-spread. Simply because there's more content out there. When you only had 13 channels there was only so many shows that could be filled into the available timeslots, meaning there were only so many shows that could be prematurely cancelled. With streaming services they can have dozens of shows in production at once, plus hundreds more being licensed from other producers. Even if only 10% of shows get cancelled early, that's still dozens of times more potential for one of them to be one of _your_ personal favorite than you'd have seen on traditional TV. And worse, because the selection is completely open (unlike traditional TV where you got to watch what the station decided to play or you turned the box off), every one of those cancelled shows is likely to be _somebody's_ favorite. But its not financially feasible to keep every show running forever just on the off chance that its the favorite of somebody, somewhere. So the only two real possibilities are create shows with the knowledge that they might be ended early, or not create shows at all. That said, it would certainly be nice if Netflix was a bit more communicative with their producers and let them know about cancellations early enough that they can try to fudge together some kind of "ending" rather than waiting until damned near the day the next season starts filming before announcing the cancellation. I have no idea why they do it that way. Traditional TV figured out decades ago that viewers prefer a half-assed slapped together ending if a show's going to be cancelled rather than being left totally in the dirt. I'm sure they have some sort of business reason but I can't imagine its a great one.
@muskyoxes
@muskyoxes Рік тому
@@altrag It's worse now because every "season" is so ridiculously short. Any show that doesn't immediately find a gigantic audience is wiped out in infancy. Lots of old great shows that didn't start out great would have not survived those conditions
@altrag
@altrag Рік тому
@@muskyoxes Sure. What I'm pointing out though its that it hasn't changed much _as a percentage._ Yes, more shows get cancelled. But more shows also _don't_ get cancelled, because there's just more shows in total. That said, there is a pretty massive survivor bias involved as well. With traditional TV, there were only so many time slots to fill and most of those time slots aren't even desirable. So publishers, distributors and stations all had to be very picky about what they chose to put on. With streaming services, basically everything is available all at once and every hour is prime time. There's no "slots to fill" anymore. That means publishers have much more opportunity to allow shows with less potential to be created. Or in other words, a good chunk of that "bad show" percentage was just not visible to you - those shows simply wouldn't have been made at all. Now obviously predicting the future is not an easy trick to pull off, and the people making the decisions to green light or to cancel a show will sometimes make a mistake. But they're also very good at their jobs. They have viewership metrics. They run pilots to test out new ideas. They aren't just making these decisions on a whim based on their own preferences. But they'll still get it wrong on occasion. Nobody's perfect, and that sucks, but its not really something we can fix. So the question is not "do yo want shows you like to be cancelled?" The answer to that is obvious but money isn't infinite and not every show can be produced forever. So the obvious answer is also an impractical answer. The real question is "would you rather a show you like be cancelled after one season, or cancelled after the first script read and you never get to see it at all?" If you choose the latter, then my suggestion is to just cancel your streaming services entirely. Then you'll never have to worry about getting excited about a show that's later cancelled. I personally choose the former. Much as its disappointing to have a show cancelled I'd much rather enjoy what I can get and move onto the next show than live in continual fear of disappointment. I mean its not like I'm going to remember enough details to even keep caring a month later after I've watched 3 or 4 other entire shows. Which I can do, because there's just so many shows being made these days, that I can binge on my own schedule rather than some station's schedule, that its almost impossible to "run out".

I don't claim to know, but I think the opposite is true actually. In the past, movies/shows had to make money directly and succeed on their own terms. But now, all the money comes from the number of subscribers, so the product is the platform as a whole. And the value of a platform is decided not only by a few big budget popular shows, but also by the variety on offer. To prove your platform offers enough variety to earn a household's only subscription (because most people only subscribe to one service at a time) it's really helpful to have some really weird shows. Even if the quality isn't the greatest objectively (Squid Game comes to mind), even if the result is horrible, the fact you tried a weird thing proves something about your platform. While in the past, putting out a weird bad movie would just mean financial ruin for the people involved. So now there is less risk, and more incentive to try. I think the platform that is doomed to fail is the one that only greenlights samey safe bets. Yeah you might score a few hits, but those hits will be 99% of your platform's perceived value. Will you produce a show that is so huge it actually forces people to subscribe? Doubtful, because the market is saturated with big hitters and the few shows that rose above the pack weren't all safe bets (Game of Thrones comes to mind). Regardless, even if you do, few will stick around to watch lesser versions of the great shows they already know. In the past these lesser "safe bets" would be minor successes as they could attract enough people to the cinema (as movies) to avoid making a loss, but as part of a streaming platform, their added value is close to zero. I think Matt Damon may be talking solely about movies, which is understandable because movies are all sequels and remakes today, but that's because all the innovation has moved to streaming shows. Exactly because streaming platforms are more willing to invest in uncertain projects.

They removed certain films and shows, many USA/Canada content has never been available here in Europe (but the price is the same - so "same price, worse service") and exclusivity for various other streaming services means I would have to subscribe to more of them to see what I want. Netflix originals were usually not worth the time. Netflix is no longer a "one-stop-shop". When Netflix came I thought that film piracy was over. One of the biggest issues for Netflix is that they never got to develop communities and IPs. The nearest case to a fandom is Stranger Things, but one series out of thousands is barely enough. On the other side, their biggest competitor, Disney, has leagues of all time classic favourites, as well as budding new ones. How can they even make sure people go there if every time they announce a new series, everyone is expecting them to kill it at the end of the season?

I def agree with other people saying it's annoying that Netflix often cancels shows too early... Another gripe I have with the service (and streaming platforms in general) is that despite the fancy algorithms, it can be quite hard to actually find things you want to watch. Good luck finding something again if you forgot to add it to your list. Even if it is on your list, you'll need to scroll through it for ages. The search functions and 'to watch' lists are so basic and rudimentary, like why can't I sort my 'to watch' list into different lists by now eg. by genre? And personally, I find the UX of NowTV (so confusing and un-intuitive) and Disney+ (why can't we skip the credits and go to the next ep?) really annoying. If the streaming platforms are so keen on getting a tech company evaluation, the least they could do is improve and innovate the user experience

I remember when the "cable explosion" happened, and the running gag became "200 channels and nothing's on...". Pretty much the same thing, only it's much harder to hide the actual viewership now. The main issue for Netflix is that the technology has essentially matured, and thus their formally unique tool is now commonly available. You don't continue to be a tech company unless you're the one setting up the streaming services for other companies. Netflix is now a movie house, it is now their library that gives them value while their servers have constant depreciating value. Charging their customers more and more while paying less and less for content (original and 3rd parties, both), punishing people for password sharing, removing user input on what they liked/disliked, manipulating their algorithm to push original content over 3rd party content, etc... Their algorithm is built to push whatever Netflix wants to push. It does not help me find something that I would like to watch (The same 5 shows I have no interest in watching will appear in every category? Including, "Recommended for You", really? Based on what? You stopped asking for my input on that years ago). Nobody in the industry wants to license their content to Netflix anymore for the same reason; nothing can compete against Netflix Originals on Netflix. I can pick up 2 other streaming services for what I pay Netflix. I already get Prime Video with my Prime sub. I also snagged 12 months of Curiosity Stream and Nebula for one month's worth of Netflix. When Netflix was the only kid in town it was great. I loved being subscribed and watching all the cool stuff. But now we have loads of streaming platforms, all with their flagship shows but I would never pay that subscription fee to just watch a single or couple of shows. I canceled my subscription and started pirating everything again. Because most dont even release their content anywhere outside of their platform (where I would maybe happily do a pay per view thing for certain shows there isn't a ghost of a chance I'm going to get a montly subscription plan.) I really feel that streaming services are like social media companies: A natural monopoly. Where they are best when they are in widespread use. Just like social media is better when all your friends are on there, so too is a streaming service when it has a lot of content. I honestly think that Netflix (or any other streaming service) has that tech company level potential for growth, but they need to convince other companies to upload content to their site instead of starting their own streaming service. Hopefully most of these services will fail and two streaming services come out on top. Competing to make the best content and be worth your subscription. Until that day I will refuse to spend even a cent on their content, the current streaming service landscape is insane and not worth my money or my time.

Very simply explained and thoroughly watchable. But you missed one of the key challenges any streaming service faces. And that’s profitability. Netflix realised at launch that it was paying out most of its revenue to the owners of the content it was streaming (ie the traditional media companies) and So to become profitable it needed to build its own content library so as to cut this massive cost to the business. I don’t known what the data says now, but I think Netflix still pays out 50-70% of revenue so is a long way from being profitable. And this is also something investors think about too.

Definitely threating a media company as a tech company in terms of stock evaluation played a big factor in the current decline of Netflix, the value of which was overinflated to begin with. And competition is definetely a major factor, which I believe lead to a return to prominence of piracy. If I can find 90% of the shows I'm interested watching on streaming platform X and paying those 10ish buck a month, that sounds like a fair deal, which made most reconsider to rely on dodgy pirate websites instead. However, if now the shows are distributed across 5 platforms and to watch the same amount of content one needs to subscribe to all of them and pay 60ish bucks a month, that deal suddenly becomes much less attractive, especially if people notice that they are paying the 10ish buck to platform X to watch maybe only one show... which could be also easily found with less legal means. Add macroeconomic situation with rising cost of living due to high inflation, higher interest rates on mortgages, energy crisis in certain areas of the world, and streaming services are in trouble.

I like your explanation on valuation and competition. Wow it reminds me of what I studied years ago in marketing, classic text book stuff. A company create a new product/service that has lots of demand and the company is successful/huge profits. Other companies see this and enter the market and you have increased competition which lowers the company's margin. Has more companies enter the price of the product/service get lower and lower. In this case it is valuation (PE). The one that can provide this service/product at the lowest cost wins forcing other competitors to leave the market. For this entertainment segment you have a lot of old players that have be able to co-exists for decades. It is interesting that AT&T spun off Warner Brothers / HBO expecting that this segment would have a higher valuation and therefor a greater benefit to the shareholders. We have to wait and see once the markets are more optimistic if the previous valuations are restored.

Instead of everyone making their own service, I believe that, from a consumer's point of view, at least, is to just consolidate into a handful of streaming services. In Netflix's early days, all these studios that were perfectly content to license their shows/movies to Netflix (hey, why not, another revenue stream!). But the second Netflix decided to make original content, they become a competitor, and why would a studio license its valuable IP to help promote a competitor? So, more and more studios pulled their shows and movies, often trying to set up their own streamer to compete with Netflix. A shame, really, Netflix could have been the one place studios went to stream their stuff, and we'd have one streamer instead of dozens.

And I also do think it was inevitable that at some point "Originals" would have to be a thing. If Netflix did not do it, others would have done it, I'm sure. What I do think tho, like the comment above also mentioned, is that Netflix was pushing its own content a bit too much, to the point where content providers started looking around for alternatives or decided to come up with their own streaming service. So, I don't think coming up with the Netflix Originals was necessarily a bad thing (was probably inevitable), but they were pushing these so much that at the same time they pushed non-Netflix creators away from their platform into the arms of other streaming services.

I would say your explanation is a bit off. It is not far off, but the simplifications mean that people get some wrong ideas. Your basic premise is that Netflix had a very high Price to Earnings (P/E) ratio and that was because it convinced investors that it was a tech company. The high P/E comes from it being portrayed as a high growth company. These are most often seen in tech, but can be in other industries where they are disrupting a market. And that market disruption is the key. The idea is that markets in that state act in non-linear ways. Let me give the classic counter comparison, Coke and Pepsi. Unless Coca-Cola does another new Coke, there are only small changes in market share based on what those companies do. That market can be analyzed by demographics, spending, and trends. Streaming services have disrupted the pay video market, but that disruption is essentially over. You can analyze what is going on now. Problem number two for these high growth companies is what is called Total Addressable Market or TAM. TAM says how big a particular market is and how much a particular competitor can win. Video streaming is not an infinite business. There are limits on subscribers and the value of these subscribers. At some point, all these businesses slow their growth as they hit limits in their ability to add new customers or charge these customers more money. As that happens to a company and it exits this high growth period, the P/E will drop. That does not mean the company is going to lose money or go out of business. It means the value of the stock will go down. That is not great news for investors and in many high growth companies that is often includes many employees. This is a natural part of the whole life cycle of businesses. You might look at Microsoft and think about the fact that it is not a high growth business, but is not in trouble and is making lots of money. It is true that this inflection point often causes internal problems in companies, but smart ones navigate these waters fine. Use IBM as an example of a company that has re-invented itself many, many times. The streaming business will change over time. These companies have all decided that they need to be in the content business to attract new subscribers. Over time (as was in your Jim Cramer quote in the video), this will stop working. There is a TAM for any set of content and all these platforms will eventually plateau. What happens then will be interesting. Let me give you my prediction, Netflix (or others) will eventually license out their older content to other platforms starting with Cable TV. Once a show (like say Orange is the New Black) stops bringing viewers to a platform it stops having value as content. Netflix could monetize those shows again in syndication and make more money. Just think about how many times Seinfeld, Law and Order, and the Big Bang Theory are on in a day. I am sure that new content will be welcomed by many channels and there is money to be made.

Netflix's 4k option costs £16 per month, and doesn't offer a student plan at all. Since Better Call Saul is finished I will be cancelling my netflix membership. Bad company, hope it becomes the next blockbuster.

Netflix was great at first. Viewers were happy to pay to watch everything they wanted, and Netflix got viewers to pay just a little extra. Now the streaming landscape has viewers not getting everything they want, and having to pay way more than a little extra. If streaming services can somehow find a way to collectively give viewers everything they want again and only having to pay a little extra, it would be golden.

Really good video and cool topic but if I cam give some critism, there is a lot of cutting back and forth, zooming in zooming out, without much transition or consistent pace, I would suggest trying to make things a little more fluid with cuts to scenes, how long they are there for, cuts to graphs, zooming etc. Like showing a graph, then but to just camera then back to graph, instead of just showing the graph and transition into a new graphs without the middle cut. Same with the highlighted words, not all of them is important, it just becomes a lot of static. The same with cutting in the takes, if you are doing a cut on the speaking to make it sound fluid, make that cute when you are showing some footage instead of us looking at the stuttering. The illusion of a fluid narration is quite appealing even if we know that's not the case. But overall loved the video and interesting topic, also English isn't my first language of I expressed some things in a weird way.

I think a big reason a lot of media outlets also do negative news articles about Netflix is they are owned by Netflix's competitors. Netflix could be a tech company if they go like Amazon to make their own infrastructure to be independent and in the same time allow others to buy their service. They could be like between Cloudflare, Azure and Wordpress but for different application. Netflix Entertainment should be separate from Netflix Core and Netflix Technology. I think there are two fundamental social and political issues behind the streaming wars. Firstly, as in any form of art, there are only so many top tier program makers in the world therefore there is a straight cap on how many really good shows can be made no matter how much money is thrown at it. So diversification of platforms = dilution of content on each. Secondly national broadcasters cannot compete with their budgets necessarily scaled to a national as opposed to the global market. Netflix stood out as excellent value for money 'cos for years it hosted all of the best film and TV made in one place and all the content creators got paid extra by them as well. It can't anymore so it isn't, and Disney will overtake it purely 'cos it has all the best kids shows making it a mandatory subscription for parents of whom there are obviously a lot. Nobody is going to begrudge Disney's right to monetise their own IPs per se, but to weaponise it towards a monopoly on the streaming platform front, who exactly does that benefit? The question is do we really want this dilution of content and destruction of our national broadcasters, who does this benefit, and is broadcasting per se too important culturally, socially and politically to allow a handful of unaccountable global conglomerates to dictate what happens to it?

@m.r.2718
@m.r.2718 Рік тому
So, yeah...We can all overthink this and make 30-minutes videos about it, but the answer to what "killed" Netflix is...competition. That's it. There was nothing really like it when it started, but now there are dozens of quality streaming services (there are also a lot of country-specific ones) and so consumers are now forced to make choices, and since Netflix pretty much had a monopoly for a number of years, it's only logical that it's subs numbers would start to fall. They probably should've seen this coming and started investing in strategies on how they would combat this (like paying good money for exclusive rights of non-netflix-original content) and maybe put less money in pumping out (and promoting) way too many original series and films.

Don’t credit investors that much. Netflix has been taking poor business decisions for several years now, from abusing from content block by location to blocking accounts with more than one IP address, including the híper focalization on “documentaries”. The increase in competition, with much more appealing content (including content that once was on Netflix) isn’t helping either. The loss of subscribers is something they have been looking for a long time. And instead of offering a more competitive package, they decide to increase prices, which isn’t helping either.

I’m really annoyed by their price increase, so I cancelled my subscription. I understand that inflation is rising et al, but they’re an essentially zero-marginal-cost business so it affects them much less than other businesses. Since people everywhere are facing financial pressure, I think it’s a very inopportune moment to demand an increase in fees, so I cancelled. After all voting with our wallet is the only avenue of expression available to us, so we might as well use it.

While I have been using Netflix since 2017 and slowly been watching more (I prefer watching Disney+ over Netflix honestly), there are few originals I enjoy. When it comes to the Live Action shows, I have only watched Stranger Things in the recent months, and will be sticking around for Season 5, and I do plan to watch Better Call Saul & Ozark soon. I have also watched Squid Game, but I'm not really interested in watching the rest of the series at the moment. As a big animation fan, I am mostly interested in animated media, but compared to Disney+, its not really that great of a selection (although it isn't really fair to compare it to the likes of Disney). Arcane & She-Ra were amazing, and Hilda is wholesome, and that's all really, there are a handful of animated shows I plan on watching. Another reason why I would stay subscribed to Netflix is the imported content, some examples been Breaking Bad & various anime such as Pokémon (which is something I notice people don't talk about much when it comes to what Netflix has to offer). I have three subscriptions right now, and part of another, as of now, I prefer Disney+ over Netflix, but I do prefer Netflix over Paramount+ & Amazon Prime. From Top to Bottom, my current ranking: 1. Disney+: Has a great catalogue of classic movies & television series, easy to navigate and a good selection of Disney+ Originals (although for me, its usually the Marvel & Star Wars related stuff). Its also pretty cheap, although I am aware that will change soon. 2. Netflix: Solid Original Content & a handful of good imported series, also easy to navigate. If there is one complaint, its that I feel like its getting more expensive, and with Netflix cracking down on shared subscriptions, I am concerned (while I do own my Netflix account, I do share it with my family members). Have not used Netflix Gaming, so I won't comment on that 3. Amazon Prime: The one account I'm part of in a shared account capacity. Not sure about imported content as its rather lacking compared to the UK version of Amazon Prime, and the only original content as of right now that I care about is Bad Boys (I might watch Invincible down the line). Kind of hard to navigate too 4. Paramoun+: Slow, hard to know when there is new content, hard to navigate, doesn't automatically go to the next episode of show an option for that and lack of content, especially in the Nicktoons side of things (which is the only reason why I have Paramount+ honestly). Aside from SpongeBob, Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, ATLA, Rugrats & 1 Season of Jimmy Neutron, there isn't much 2000s & late 90s series on the UK & Ireland iteration of the app. Its mostly modern series, which I don't mind, but it is annoying. I have had a Funimation & a Crunchyroll account before and still do, but 1. I don't use them much these days (taking a break from anime honestly) and 2. I don't really rank them alongside what I would call "The Big Guys" aka Disney, Netflix, Amazon, Paramount & HBO Max.

1st Netflix isn't dying. It lost 2 mil out of 300+ million subscribers. That is less than 1%. What company is dying from a 1% drop? The press jumped on it because after years of reporting sunshine and rainbows for Netflix a little stormy weather is seen as a hurricane. They want to keep that multipler and the billions in investors that come with. I disagree. I think Netflix should shed its tech company mask and find new life as a media company. 2nd live with competition. Disney isn't going away. Apple and Amazon maybe hobbies for Bezos and Cook, but it's business for Disney and WB (if they can survive Zaslav). So much of its advertising was free like it's listings of comings and goings. It is passed time Netflix to do its own PR and media.

Unfortunately like a lot of successful services, they have fallen sway to the usual moron financial where nothing less than perpetual growth is acceptable. In the real world, perpetual growth does not happen, however in the minds of the economists it does and anything in the way of it must fall. The first symptom of this stupidity is usually reduced quality/content and steadily raising prices to keep the fantasy of a perpetually growing income stream going on for longer. Microsoft do this, Netflix do this, and these are just to two most prominent ones that immediately come to mind. Services reach saturation point, economies grow and fall.

Netflix might well have been a tech company. There was no way to know in the beginning. The main mistake they made was to innovate on content, instead of technology. This is what made them less of a tech company and more of a media outlet. Having next to no technological advantage is what allowed their competitors to catch up to them so quickly. The reason tech companies are so disruptive is the slow progression of software development. If you have a head start, disrupt the market and then pour the investors' money into more software development, competitors will have a very hard time catching up, since software development cannot be infinitely sped up with more money.

These features are expensive and take time to implement, making it very hard for Epic to enter this market. People signed up to check the competitors. After seeing all the Netflix exclusive content, they were bored with the speed at which new content came out that interested them.
