It’s the same as lying down on a bed of nails. Yes, it is sharp, but it does not break skin because the pressure is spread out over about a 3.5” distance, making it fine to press on. Similarly, on a bed of nails nothing will pierce skin because of the pressure being distributed over a large area.

@dizawnofwizar 4 місяці тому
Well the problem was they were screwed in place, so if they broke or had any issue you had to change skates. The chassis would have to be de riveted and re riveted. Later ones had screws on the outside which is easier but still pretty slow comparatively One thing that happens more often than actually losing a blade is just losing an edge or needing a sharpening, and doing it like this is obviously faster.
@chexlemeneux8790
@chexlemeneux8790 4 місяці тому
@dizawnofwizar At least you can skate back to the bench with a dull edge , alot harder with no blade. IMO losing an entire blade even once has more than negated the benefit of the system.

In many cases, you don't need to remove the blade, it already self ejected out on the ice. You have about 40 seconds times 2 or 3 between shifts so the time crawling off the ice without a blade offsets the "cool" quick replace feature. Nice try Bauer.

Wonder why they don't wear a cut resistant glove just to be sure, it's not like they need their hands for some precision work when doing that
@KingIzStr8Rippin
@KingIzStr8Rippin 4 місяці тому
I wouldn't wanna push on a freshly sharpened skate with any sort of metal resistant glove. Small chance it messes up the smoothness of the sharpening. If the glove is strong enough and rubs weird on the blade you could create an edge. "I caught an edge". I think usually bad edges are made from stepping on things or rough skating. Like the boards have random metal on the bench that holds the boards up. Sometimes when I jump them the blade near my toes touch the metal bracket if I pay more attention to where my leg is swinging (so I don't cut the guy jumping the boards the same time as me). Is it far fetched that the cut resistant glove would damage the blade? Maybe. But if I'm a professional trainer I ain't taking the chance of a player getting upset. Hockey blades are flat on the bottom. It's how we stand. The edge is on either side. I can push my thumb or palm comfortably on the bottom of my blade. But there's a particular spot to do it. I'm not pushing into the sides of the blade. Just the flat spot on top. And I would never rub my hand on the blade. Only apply downward pressure. Rubbing against the blade is how you'd get cut. Pushing on the blade is unpleasant if you're stepped on but you have a chance to avoid a cut. If you've ever felt your razor catch your face when shaving it's kind of similar for when your skate catches you. You can rub your finger on the bottom of that flat part and not get cut. But if you put too much pressure down and rub toward either left or right yea you might get cut.

Everyone concerned about the blades being sharp, the blade is square at the bottom with two sharp edges to be able to pivot and cut when you go at an angle in the ice, when skating straight the flat part of the blade is gliding on beads of water so no need to cut, it’s hard to explain. Neil deGrasse Tyson explains it pretty well.

What they don’t tell you is every time you remove the blade and put a new on in it loses a lil bit of tightness. That’s why you need players lose blades all the time. The whole holder has to be replaced.
