This week Craig Benzine talks about how the President gets things done. Filling the role of the Executive Branch is a pretty big job - much too big for just one person. It's so big that the President employs an entire federal bureaucracy! Today, we’re just going to focus on those closest to the President, like the Vice President, the Cabinet, and the Executive Office of the President. We’ll figure out which strategy is most useful in helping the President make things happen and we’ll discuss the controversy around the President’s gradual increase in power. Oh, and as many of you noticed - last episode eagle got off too easy. Let’s see if we can make it up to you.

Being a postal worker, I'll have you know that the Post Office is actually incredibly profitable. It just happens to also be in a great deal of debt because the majority of it's reserve funds were taken away from it by the federal government to subsidize social security in the late 90s. The recession didn't help the Post Office at all, thus the many post office shutdowns. But now that the economy is improving, the Post Office is doing fairly well. We're all just hoping the feds don't take more money from us. Because we've almost got ourselves out of the hole financially speaking.

Mystogan Edolas sounds a lot like what happened to the roman empire too. the superpower builds itself up and then when overinflated, it gets popped by something "insignificant". actually, here's a few empires from history that would fall into his niche: Russian Empire, Soviet Union, Ottoman Empire, Persian Empire, British Empire. they all have fallen when they were "too big to fail" :P

The postal service isn't doing well because Congress passed a bill in 2006 requiring it to meet unreasonable pension requirements, and prohibiting it from engaging in activities that were designed to raise a profit. It's less to do with the rise in email and more do with Congress deliberately hamstringing it.

Administrative strategy is important because, especially now, we live in an age of presidential government. The executive branch is huge. (Thanks to usurpation of the executive branch during FDR times) The president has permanent agencies that perform defined management tasks for the president. This is reffered to as the institutional presidency

I don't live in the USA, I'm from England, so I guess what I'm about to say is coming from a not so informed source. I think Barack Obama is the best president the USA has had for a long time. I mean, he's a likeable guy, or at least I like what I've seen of him. He's implemented some very interesting polices (Obama-care for 1) and looking from the outside, he seems as if he actually cares for the foreign image of the USA (which you must admit 'Murican bro's you really do need help there) He's more liberal, and being a liberal type of guy, I like this as I've always saw the USA as more of a 'inward' looking, conservative country interested primarily on it's own affairs. And lastly I think he's a genuinely 'good' guy who really does seem to want to do the USA's citizens proud. Now I know he's not universally popular (who ever is?) and I hear a lot of American's berate Barack and I'd like to know why.

@lolpauve
@lolpauve 9 років тому
Ooshgaar Oh dear where to begin. Well one, breaking of or attempting to break campaign promises. Remember the whole "bring our troops home" thing? In fact, his administration was heavily lobbying Prime Minister Maliki for a status of forces agreement to allow some U.S. troops to remain in Iraq after 2011. It was only the refusal by the Iraqis which forced complete withdrawal of U.S. troops. Similarly in Afghanistan, he said something along the lines of getting them out in summer of 2011. However, not only did he not get them out, he escalated it into the border region of Pakistan. That's number one. Number two, the general shitting of civil liberties which granted mainly done by his administration and not him directly but he's the president and does have control over some of it, which he definitely did not use for good. *Cough* Drone strikes *cough* and Gitmo/Bagram/Gitmo North and military tribunals to which Obama said first, paraphrasing "hell no" and when he got into office his attitude was more like "well ok". Gay rights is another thing. Obama in 2012: Well i think everyone is equal but I can't be bothered to lift a finger about it. (Note that was not an actual quote, that was just my interpretation of a statement he made during the second presidential campaign. But this is just what I've picked up on, I reccomend you skim through this: www.obamatheconservative.com/ and I do mean skim since it's quite long and comprehensive (and well written and well sourced.

Ooshgaar He's not wrong that Obama has done many conservative things, but to call him conservative from an American perspective (pretty much all American politicians are conservative from a European perspective) is flat out wrong. Also, as Greg pointed out in this very video, it's hard for presidents to get things done with a divided Washington. And finally, here's a good look at Obama's campaign promises. www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/obameter/
