Robinhood led the way for zero commission trading. It helped bring in a new generation of investors to the stock market. The Covid-19 pandemic and stay-at-home orders helped the trading app add 3 million users in the first quarter of 2020. “The Robinhood Trader” quickly became synonymous with retail trading. The company has made the stock market more accessible to millions of users but not without complications.
The beginning of 2020 created a unique moment for retail trading: Increased market volatility, stay-at-home orders, and zero commission fees across all trading platforms created a surge in activity and an increase in first-time traders.
These first-time traders, many in their 20s and 30s, found the stock market accessible. High prices had kept many on the sidelines for years. As sports events were canceled, sports betting was replaced with stock trading.
Stocks went to historic lows, and many young investors opened their Robinhood app. Robinhood has been the fintech darling of Silicon Valley, founded by Vladimir Tenev and Baiju Bhatt in 2013. The app has amassed 13 million user accounts and led the way for zero-commission fee trading. In no time, it has created brand awareness and popularity unlike that of the legacy brokerages such as Charles Schwab and Fidelity, or its app-first competitors like Webull and Dough.
Users download Robinhood for its simplicity and ability to start trading in a matter of seconds. For the first time, young investors felt they had the power to trade and make their own decisions on how to invest their money. The app came from Silicon Valley, not Wall Street, and its frictionless interface and ‘game-ified’ features quickly captured young, first-time stock traders.
In a Dec. 4, interview on CNBC’s “Mad Money,” Bhatt told Jim Cramer, “The thing that makes Robinhood really unique is that it’s incredibly efficient in the way that it operates because we’re from the ground up a technology company which allows us to build really modern systems that have our systems be much more automated much more stable by just having code execute.”
As a fintech leader and with such large growth, Robinhood has met lots of challenges. It’s battling the SEC, lawsuits, and growing competition from traditional Wall Street firms.
Watch the video above to find out how Robinhood plans to keep up with the demands of its users - and with the growing attention of regulators.

Their UI is the reason I use them just because it is sooo easy to monitor my portfolio and adjust as needed. My degree is in architecture and with all the analysis / maths done over the years, being able to actually see the performance of companies, compare data, and keep up to date on my phone makes it much easier to invest strongly. As an early retired investor I strongly support young people being encouraged into investing. The problem of people trading short term is not caused by Robinhood, but by the misunderstanding of how markets work. Long term investing is great, and provides a very nice monthly income for me. Day trading by amateurs leads to bankruptcy. The young traders will slowly learn how to invest. They will avoid the crooked sales brokers. However, once you have accumulated a nice nest egg you do need to talk to a financial adviser about how to protect your wealth and minimise tax.

skyak - most online brokers provide these, as it’s very easy to code, given that all trades are automatically recorded. It should be easily enough for Robinhood to then provide a rough trading tax estimate, once you note your state. That can then be taken to your tax accountant. Or better still, if you have a sizeable sum, move your investing to a country with minimal tax on investing.

I put a simple 400& and it’s almost at 800 Not to mention the free stocks you get if you invite friends. It’s just simple save , hold and when your stocks go double , invest again and make more money. It’s a slow building process but you get more the more you learn and read about it and the less emotions you put in it. If it goes down just hold and it will go back up. The most simplistic answer is that Robinhood is the first Trading/Investing app thats user friendly. Notice how i said app not brokerage. Robinhood killed 2 birds with one stone. It made a historically very confusing and scary thing like finance, simplistic and did so in the most popular form via an app. Robinhood doesn’t have the best trading hours, doesn’t have charts, doesn’t have the best company/stock breakdowns, doesn’t have good customer support(it actually sucks), doesn’t have a community /chat/comment section. Theres many more it doesn’t have, but what also helps it is the massive media coverage it gets. IMO WeBull blows Robinhood out of the water in trading hours, company/stock breakdown, user connectivity, customer support.

The death of that young kid was really unfortunate, I sincerely wished he asked someone or posted a question on reddit before doing this, or just waited until Monday morning as it would have been automatically handled. This situation is a common question I see on Reddit. It is very important that you learn options very well and how to handle assignments before trading advanced strategies. I have had negative account balance many times and I knew very well it will be settled on the following Monday. I recently started my own youtube channel in an effort to provide beginner friendly options education.

I have to admit that even with zero commissions, the odds are not in the favor of the investors using it. The big boys are armed with better equipment, information, communications etc. They can move quicker and take advantage of an opportunity faster than some random guy in his living room. By the time your average Joe acts, the market will have already moved out of his favor.

@@edmonddanvers902 Don't listen to him, don't give up. Trading takes time(months, even years) to master, even the pros learn everyday. Never the less, if you lose money no matter which side you take, maybe you need to look at how you are managing active trades rather than how you are entering them. My advice, find a mentor . And also, try incorporating the use of oscillators, Bollinger and pivot points into your strategy. And most importantly move to higher TFs(4h or 1D preferably), you'll thank me later .

@@ainsworthbryan6391 I think your over complicate it I will advice you not to give up. First of all there a lot of volatility in the market right now. Pick your time frame. Look at the time frame above it. Right away you should know the trend. Is it going up sideways or down. If it going up. go to next time frame and identify trend up sideways or down. For example if week chart says up. Day chart says down. Look for support and resistance line. If hour chart bounce off the day chart or weekly chart or both. The probability that it will go up. So you buy... now what if it didn't show signs of a bounce then you dont buy. If you bought and the trade turn against you at what ever your risk is then sell. If you just do this the the probability is on your side and you have a edge. Your new take it slow learn the basics use ema or sma lines. Learn Dow theory learn chaos theory. Learn economics and finally learn through trail and error. Remember is a craft and art. It takes time. effort
