Think about how often you check one of your many social media accounts. Chances are you spend a pretty good portion of your time, productivity, and brain power participating in these apps each day. Though it may seem harmless, or even beneficial, the ubiquitous use of social media is working against our health. Our brains evolved to process social cues from real people; the more we’re on social media the less we’re having real-world interactions that challenge and support our cognition.
My guest on this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy has never had a social media account-and he’s managed to thrive! Cal Newport is an associate professor of computer science at Georgetown University and writes about the impact of technological innovations on our culture. Newport is the author of six books, including Digital Minimalism and Deep Work. As we dive into the topic of social media, Cal shares his expertise on how it’s impacting public health and culture in ways much greater than you might expect.

Interestingly, this talk was viewed so far by only 29K from 346K subscribers of this channel. And, if you look at other Cal Newport's talks, you will observe the same. His talks are definitely not for all, and never will be viewed by millions. But, in fact, they have much, much more value that 99% of other staff one can find on UKposts.

I got mentally ill bad!! I started to compare myself and was constantly doin that and beating myself up and becoming jealous and hating people i really likked and loved whem they started posting things for likes and sympathy. Litterally beocme addicted craving my phone and craving notifications. I quit for 5 months but went back becuse i hosted an event. The 5 months gone i got my health back and it was so nice to live my life and not others. I juust left again for 4 weeks and stilll off with no intent to return. UKposts is good enough for me. Ive gained so much time back with my life and feeels so right to actually live life in real time. Social media is a waste of life, exactly what the enemy wants us doing. But not me!! Im spending the rest of my life looking up at the sky instead of down at my screen 🙏

Cal Newport is an amazing mind. This video/podcast is brilliant. The younger generations should absolutely hear what Cal, or others like him, has to say on this issue. Cal presents it perfectly. It’s heartbreaking that there are; and will continue to be if it doesn’t stop….generations of young people that were born into a world never knowing what it’s like NOT to have social media; or that life is not meant to be lived through thier phone apps. We need to show them that life is out here; not in there. STAT.

Twitter is 8th grade note passing and Facebook/Instagram is like a high school year book. Can be interesting but have become way to much. One word: Immature These things have taken the term "Couch Potato" to new highs. Used to be just TV now you never have to leave home to do anything. Just sit there and swipe away. Gained some weight? No worries, just post a picture of yourself from 10 years ago when you were thin. As long as you get the likes that is all that matters. We can all just pretend.

Sounds much better :) I never have any trouble finding your content. I do have a Facebook account, which I access once a day, for 15 minutes to half an hour, usually listening to music. What I dont like about youtube or social media that I write my thought or opinion feeling, but then I want to delete it, because no matter how thoughtful the message is.... we shouldn't spend time writting some mesages that some unknown person will read....it may be inspirational but it shouldn't be a purpose spend time to write opinions all the time. It's not productive..... What´s is the point that thousand people will write 1000 opinions under some photo or video. The people don't know each other. Maybe writing the blog is better or more healthy as he said.....It seems like I write the comment just to satisfy the subconscious mind or the ego-mind... or to get some dopamine... but it's not so important because it may be an inspiration for someone, to read it, but it's short, the person has to create his/her own ideas or rules, his her mind will forget all stuff he or she read and will remember only a few of them.

I think Instagram has bigger pictures that can be zoomed in to make them bigger so you will look at them often..... Pinterest has smaller pictures, you can't zoom it for the reason that you can zoom them only by clicking on it to visit some store or website.. But I didn't think about how Pinterest earns money from it..But I like the fact that Pinterest offers inspirational artistic pictures that are hard to find through google.. like some provision from the stores or websites.. I don't use Pinterest often, I don't have a smartphone only a computer. Facebook is based on shared sites it shows you not only groups you follow but also groups that are followed by your friends or even by people who you don't follow but they follow the groups you follow.... it like some playing ping pong with your mind.... You would go to a store or restaurant.... and the store doesn't show pictures of 100 similar stores and restaurants and recommendations of hundreds of people you don't know who visited the store.. It's a weird system that makes no sense... If I already visit my favorite store and have a limited amount of money why I should go to multiple recommended stores ... if I already ate my food in my favorite store. It just teaches you to have no opinion or to be hesitant about things you want or need....If I already visit one club of some group of people why I should visit multiple similar clubs and groups.... if I didn't give value to the first one. It should teach you to stay in the first group and then follow multiple groups and not be tempted all the time to enter other groups and clubs.... You can not do 10 things at the same time.

Whenever Cal said “Social Media”, I heard “Sugar”. Abstinence from carbs is most effective in the presence of fat, and the two mixed ad libitum is deleterious. So then what is the digital equivalent of dietary fat, 🤔 ? Newspapers? Television? Books? He’s more correct than not, but there’s more to this equation than saying don’t eat ... There’s got to be a “Eat this...”
@mississippidel

Good point! Maybe though swopping carb age with fats ( keto movement doesn't say no carbage just very limited eg 50g or less a day) equates with digital by limiting usesage to what develops your path / values , using it for what jobs had in mind in 2007 and swop it with analogue ( books papers ,radio ,learn an instrument, volunteer , sports,family/partner friends conversation, basically get a real life !!) The real life analogue activities are the beneficial fats . Much more fulfilling and satiating ( like fats )

Facebook catches attention to distract you for 90 percent..... Your feelings, you feel distracted, bored You ay only 10 percent to yourself.... Facebook recommends groups that are the same, of topic you follow....your feelings are you feel the same, no matter what you follow ...... Facebook recommends people you don't know personally.... your feelings are that you feel confused, you don't know who you are, you don't know who they are.... You seek approval about what you do is right to satisfy some algorithm. If you don't get the approval you do other stuff, you never feel satisfied, because your mind is not designed for this way of social interactions.....You feel confused distracted and don't pay attention to your own feelings. You just stimulate the brain with dopamine coming from overconsumption and approvals and recomendations.

What about people that kind of rely on social media for their career - I'm an artist and want to quit social media but I know it will hurt my business as an indie creator. My goal in art is not to be an influencer in fact I hate that idea instead I am using it as a means to get eyes on my work. I do keep it as professional as I can but I still find it to be terribly distracting and hurting my mental health. But I can'y just stop using it nor can I afford a social media company to do it for me. Any suggestions form anyone in a similar situation?
@rennley_9233
@rennley_9233 2 роки тому
i understand that completely; i'm an artist as well, but i'm a graphic designer full-time, so i don't rely on my art to pay my bills. however it is something that i've wanted to grow into a passive source of additional income over the last few years. what's worked for me is doing more in-person networking, like attending classes and workshops, as well as going to local galleries, museums, and art shows. i still use instagram, but i don't keep it on my phone, and i relegate "browsing" to my desktop computer only (which i'm almost never around.) it's been the most helpful to establish an intention about how i'm going to use the app. i only follow artists that inspire me. it might sound cruel, but i stopped following "friends" or other artists just for the sake of "supporting" them, because it ended up just being mental clutter. i've curated my feed to only be work that inspires me, by artists generally far above me. and when i do check in on their work, i try to leave long, thoughtful comments that usually always include a question about their process or materials. this way, if they do respond, i'm gaining a small insight that's beneficial to me. as far as sharing my work, i used to snap photos of things and immediately share them to my stories while i was working on them. it took my attention away from my work and put it onto "i have to show my followers that i'm being productive" -- that couldn't be further from the truth. now, i still take photos of works in progress, but i save them up and then write a blog post about whatever it was i was working on...even it was months after the fact. i've never had a ton of traffic, and i honestly don't want it. but i understand that you're in a different situation -- my best advice is remove the stuff from your phone, and get yourself out there to in-person events (: (and if you ever want to reach out and chat, feel free!) - Renn

Real world interaction is wonderful, but until I learn to teleport, I'll continue to use social media to keep in touch with my far-flung friends and family. Before that, we used letters. It didn't work as well. Phones? Calling can be intrusive, while texting is more considerate. Or text and say when's a good time to call. I think what's harmful is the constant barrage of advertising that comes with social media, and the sites that keep us from being able to efficiently manage our social media contacts.
