I don’t think the “death of the movie star” is a bad thing. That started celebrity culture, which outright sucks, and also takes away from the story and the importance and focus on it, which also sucks.

I agree with everything except one thing. Is it really a bad thing that people are choosing which movies to watch based on the actual movie instead of which actors are in it? Ever since I was a child I thought it was so silly that people would go see a movie just because a certain actor is in it. Then they would act surprised when the movie wasn't good. As if the actors determine how good a movie is and not the writers/directors...

Good video but it would have been more accurate a year or two ago. Studios are now cutting back on streaming content in the post streaming war era. Years of crazy amounts of money spent on content has led to where we are right now. Hence why Disney and wb/discovery have made all the crazy cuts recently. Even bob iger has said marvel will be scaling back on what it makes. Same goes for same day theatrical/streaming releases (avatar 2 was in theaters 6 months before it got streaming). Studios are starting to learn that conditioning viewers to watch at home has severely hurt theatrical releases.

I've recently found out that the local library also rents out DVDs. It does suck that it's only DVD quality but the selection is better than all the streaming services combined when it comes to anything before 2018 or so. It's also free.

From the success of Everything Everywhere All at Once and re-emergence of films like Drive and Nightcrawler. Studios like A24 and Neon can bring back inventive movies that are really artistically-driven similar to the days of Taxi Driver that isn't some generic corporate-mess of a film.

The Golden Age studio system was the original algorithm...that's a really interesting concept. Everything new is old. Definitely like the idea of theaters improving the whole experience and livening it up a bit...there could be live music...bring back the intermission...have barbecue and beer in the lobby or something...I don't know. Would be cool to make big budget releases more of an event. I know they already are--but they could do more to make it worth the trip considering everything might be available day-of on streaming in the future. And it could justify the price.

This video seems a bit unfocused and all over the place. The most important issue is that streaming simply isn't that profitable. And that's why it's not sustainable.

We are entering an era in which people see social media and spending time at home with digital entertainment as devastating to their mental health. There is a growing oreference for IRL experiences with other people, so I think movie theaters will make a comeback to some extent.

Side note: The Hays Code, as mentioned in this video, was more than just censorship against sex on screen and profanity. It also set standards on who was an “moral human” and censored sex between the races (miscegenation) and particularly between a Black man and White woman, lgbtqia being allowed to even be seen on screen as existing in the world, and more.

As an indie "nobody" filmmaker, I take pride in the fact that I create things I want to create and answer to nobody. I always felt, even back as a kid when I wanted to start making movies, I didn't really care about being involved in HOLLYWOOD. I have even told people, were I moving to Hollywood / LA area, I would keep making movies on the DL, without trying to "make it" in the system. I generally don't like systems, and have notoriously bent rules. My hope is that more original creative outings will take place at the lower rungs of media and society, like a second wave of punk or something. None of the corporate pandering.

Two thoughts: - the death of the star isn't a bad thing. As someone born in the 80s, the "star" has always felt like a marketing tool (who's 'in' this year) and film history is full of actors who studies REALLY tried to make the Next Big Thing. - The new boss is worse than the old boss, as the old boss wouldn't harass a viewer out of their job if they voiced an opinion about the content codes.

This is why Strikes are important.

There's so many remakes these days because Hollywood is cheap and doesn't want to take risks trying something new. It's not because of streaming.

One new factor here is the use of digital images of actors who only get paid for the work involved in making them and rarely get paid for thier digital form being used. That's one of the reasons for the strike.

Narrator is great

I think what The Chosen did for season 3 might worked really well for other releases. They had the season premiere and final in the theaters ($7 per ticket) and then released on their app a few days later. If episodes were an hour long, then shows like Game of Thrones and Stranger Things might have done really well with weekly releases in theaters.

Well, yes and no. "Block booking" wasn't simply about dumping a bunch of "bad" movies in order to grant access to a "good" one. For starters, nobody at a major studio really set out to make a "bad" movie. Some projects were more ambitious or had more prestige attached to them, some turned out better or worse than they intended, but generally most people involved in making studio films back then considered themselves to be professionals making a quality product. Second, a lot of what we might consider classics now, including lots of film noir, were the result of block booking. There's an old joke that back in the '40s they didn't call them "films noir," they just called them "B' pictures (i.e., the second, shorter feature that showed on a typical movie bill alongside the bigger budgeted "A" feature). Studios could afford to take more risks, both in terms of more challenging, topical, or controversial material and on younger or unproven talent, with the cheaper "B" pictures. Block booking, and the films it produced, was a major farm system for talent both behind and in front of the camera. Also, I would argue what we have now is even worse than what existed in the 30's and 40's. Remember, this is the era that produced films like "Citizen Kane" or "The Wizard of Oz" or "Stagecoach." In that era, the moguls who ran the studios in Hollywood had a high degree of autonomy from the corporate headquarters in New York. Somewhat secure in their jobs, they could afford to take risks on projects they believed in. Now, a movie studio is just one component in a multi billion dollar media conglomerate. Movie studio executives are far more beholden to Wall Street, and its insatiable demand for ever increasing growth and profits, and ever diminishing risks.

Many people for the simplicity of streaming were in the platforms, but if you make it annoying/difficult it's just going to teach the new generation how to pirate stuff. I have Netflix because my dad loves it and it's the only platform intuitive enough for him. About the cancel culture part I think it's never bad being critical of art, even past art and it can make an interesting analisis seeing old stuff with new eyes but not because is problematic/hurtful or just annoying should be deleted of the collective memory. That's dangerous. Greed is an interesting thing. It can lead to innovation, but the excess of it can also make us stagnant.

This video feels at least 6 months behind the curve. It is a good video but at this point it is pretty clear that streaming is not an effective without ads and that content glutting is not profitable. As far as predictions go I think that as resources become more scarce and globalization continues to go into reverse that simpler, cheaper media will win more and more. I can see a scenario where inexpensive to produce programming like sitcoms or game shows make a serious comeback. I also think that cinemas and other public ways to spread out the cost of consumption are likely to make a comeback simply because less and less people will be able to afford a private viewing service. I am picking up used physical media when I can. It will be good to have around. I will say though it is definitely not as convenient as streaming stuff.

Oh well, such is life, things tend to change, and today more than in the past. In my opinion, it’s only a matter of time before most *Cinema* companies and franchises go bankrupt. Nowadays we have millions of streaming apps that allow us an array of seemingly endless content. And about the originality factor: it’s hard to create something new in a world saturated with all kinds of genres from TV series to movies to sitcoms, documentaries, etc. _I would honestly not want to be a director in today’s world, because any company or private that could offer me the funding to my artistic creation would force me to change it in a way to be as profitable as possible that it would no longer even closely resemble my original script._

I’ve always said that the streaming platforms are essentially a new version of studio theaters. And like the old studio system this probably needs to be re-examined and broken up.

Build up your physical media collection. I've gotten a ton of VHS tapes over the years. They were like 4 for $1 at thrift stores now they've gone up in price. I've even gotten some CDs because some of the music I listen to is not on Spotify.

You got some history stuff wrong...like if you missed the first run of a film in theaters, you missed it forever. Studios quite often would rerelease films into theaters. The last studio to do this regularly was Disney with its old animated films. It's interesting that this last weekend was dominated by the Barbinheimer. Both films being dialog-driven non-sequel movies. The Studio system of the past died for lots of reasons, one being television. From where I'm sitting, it looks like the new Studio system is already dying. Also, when talking about the studio, it's Warner Brothers, not Warner BROS. (They also strongly opposed The Code and resisted changing their content to please the external forces that were enforcing it.)

I cut my cable for two reasons, 1. 25% increases in cost each time. 2.) The need for 'decoder boxes' at a monthly rental fee. The family had FIVE rooms of VCR recorders (three in one room). 2a) The 'decoder boxes' did not work, thankfully, so I cut the cable and returned them. Everything was fine for a couple of years with the Over-the-Air broadcasts, I received 23 channels. [I used to get NYC, 95 miles away. Now, I barely get TV Signals 3 to 18 Miles away Straight Line of Sight Towers.] However, when the Cable companies fooled the Legislature into going 'Digital' from the Analog, I could only get 3 solid channels. The rest pixelated, froze, or sounded garbled (like talking under water). Then I found something called UKposts, and Netflix. UKposts is pushing me away with advertisements every three to five minutes, and of course the lousy TV and movies being made these days. Looks like I am back to my (300+) recorded movies/TV. from yesteryear. Yes, I still have my recorders and Old Analog TV sets!... My last theatre experience was "Mother, Juggs, and Speed". Too many children running up and down the aisle screaming dialog back at the screen. An Unenjoyable experience, never went to another.

Did this video just totally ignore the fact, that to date not a single streaming service makes ANY profit? From Netflix (investor money) through Disney+ (corporate money), all of them lose money at the moment.

I don’t trust streaming. There’s no guarantee what you want to watch will always be there and few of them offer the special features I crave. I’m still a buyer of physical media, but I’m worried about a future where it’s phased out.

10:15 isn’t just true with movies but it’s been a problem with music too. For almost two decades it’s no longer about how much you sell to make it big. And the record companies have been parasites about the situation. Instead it’s become about performing live shows in order to make a living, which is much more taxing than music sales.

Love the idea of elevating the theatre experience. Seems recent that the more movies I got o, people are showing up late, on their phones, talking, etc. I would gladly pay more to watch in a theatre where people took the viewing experience like viewing a piece of art.

So many streaming services I am slowly having that itch in my eye... might need to put the eye patch on and dust that old pirate hat.

I've come to realize celebrating actors - people whose job is to do professionally what we all did at age 5 - to pretend - is kind of stupid. F Hollywood.

The studio system controlling actors was a big deal. James Cagney - my favorite actor - was famous for his gangster roles. However, he was much more of a theater man who preferred singing and dancing. And you can see it too in Footlight Parade & Yankee Doodle Dandy - my favorite roles of his. You see the exact same actors in nearly all of the early Busby Berkeley films at Warner Bros. - like Keeler, Powell, and Blondell. But Cagney only did one with them as part of an agreement with Jack Warner, and only because Cagney was such a huge star. It's kind of sad to think of the potential movies never made because they controlled the talent.

Massively conflating issues here, and overestimating Hollywood in the 90s like it didn't have issues as well. Different...but it was no golden age.

Analogous to the broadway idea there's a cinema close to my sister in law that sometimes does LOTR reruns and even though I haven't been there yet the idea is more appealing to me than watching some disney remake.

Hollywood needs to realise that they are supposed to focus on entertaining people and not earning lots of money while spending very little. Yes they need to earn money but entertaining people should be their top priority. They're also limiting what you can and cannot see just for profit. One thing I have noticed is that most people who use streaming services willingly (As in choose to use it because they want to and not because a specific show is on that service and not on others) are people who would have gone to the cinema to watch a movie once or followed a tv show until it has finished but not want to watch it again. Those who are forced (Again; the person who uses a streaming service to keep up with their favourite franchises) are the type of person who is more likely to have bought and used DVD's and Blu Rays when they came out. The problem is there is also the people who are forced to use streaming services but they are not willing to pay over £100 per month just to keep up with their favourite franchises and shows. So instead they turn to piracy. If the companies made sure to release physical copies those people who are using piracy are probably not going to use piracy and it allows people who can't keep up with the subscription fees to be able to enjoy and keep up with their favourite franchises. The problem is Hollywood is only seeing the profit they're making from the types of people who only care about the brand and not the product. This is what I mean by focusing on entertaining and not profit. The people who actually care about what Hollywood is making are being cast aside when they're the ones a lot of these shows should be tailored for.

Gosh no wonder we ended up with so many rubbish these days. Also with the strikes still ongoing Hollywood literally needs to revamped itself otherwise all movies in the World will only be superheroes, sci fi and many other multiverses genres.

Censorship coming from Twitter is absolutely a bad thing, old censorship was bad...full stop, but at least it was "usually" consistent. Twitter censorship by contrast is all over the map. This isn't to say that some of the complaints aren't justified...but at a certain point, everything literally becomes offensive if someone "says it is" even if they don't actually believe it is and are simply saying it for clout or to actively sabotage the thing in question (which I do believe some are doing, either for themselves or at the direction of competing studios). As for the return of block booking, we're already seeing signs of studios having learned nothing of moral value and backsliding into exploitive practices both with actors and toward viewers...not only that but they're also showing signs of utterly mismanaging the system they're trying to create, which benefits neither producers of the product or the consumers of it. A lot of this is echoing stuff that has happened in the industry before and seems to be on track to start repeating.

If you want to talk about how things work, then you should know how things work. Gone With the Wind may have run for 4 years straight in the theaters but after that it kept returning again and again. Every summer we waited for Star Wars to come back to the local theater so we could see it again. My grand parents took me to see Gone With the Wind in the theater, an eternity after its 4 year original run. Movies were not just "gone for good" after their first run. Disney even planed their theater returns to be IIRC 7 years. The VHS was mostly the death of theater returns with rare exceptions like the Lucas ruined Original Star Wars coming back for a full blown run.

I don’t really think that people don’t go to the movies for the actors anymore. There are still certain actors that people all go see like Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Cruise. But it is sad that it seems that it has to be an event film or sequel for people to check it our while some great movies based on original stories are ignored.

Strongly disagree that people only go see the costume. The current phase of Marvel's movies have less star power and as a result has lower box office returns. Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans are movie stars. Chris Hemsworth is not. Chadwick Bosman was a movie Star. Shazam has no movie stars. Ezra Miller is not a movie star. The Rock is a movie star, but Black Adam cost too much among other issues. Movie stars still matter.

Something that people never discuss is the fact that, during the 20th century, for the first time in human history culture ceased to be something created by the population and started to be something created by corporations and sold to the population. This means that we all have grown up in an era which is dominated by synthetic, artificial culture. This Is Not Good. This concentration of cultural power was the result of the technology and associated costs of the time. Now, as content creation becomes more democratized, and especially with AI content creation already getting started, there is a possibility for this to change. If we are lucky, we may get to witness the population reclaim the cultural steering wheel from elites and corporations and once again become the dominant producers of creative output. I am firmly in the camp of those who want to see the existing film and music apparatus die, the sooner and the more catastrophic, the better.

Remember everyone bragging about “cutting cable” as recently as a year or 2 ago. As if to note they were super cool tech savvy folk. But the old cable system was better in many ways. All the content in one place. Many spending more on streaming than the did cable.it’s the same companies, so was always going to happen.

The problem with streaming is that it works best when people pay for subscriptions but don't watch anything. So, they want to have enough content to attract subscribers but not so much they watch often.

The movie are not released to streaming until it make its full box office run . They could make movie series just for streaming with no box office.

I abandoned most streaming services when they censored Community. Bought the box set so I have the original forever and get physical for anything else I care about.

Shifting their business focus to merchandising could enable cinemas to reduce prices. They always had that opportunity to before, but continued making a killing on gouging concession prices because it didn't reduce demand sufficiently to compromise their undeservedly whopping profit margins. Now that they face stiff competition from streaming, they have more reason to encourage admission, and get more people in the door so they can make their sales in junk food and tacky merch.

I have issues with some of arguments: 1-) I think that in that interview Anthony Mackie was extremely arrogant. He was somewhat complaining that his figure was associated with Falcon, and that in his mind he could be the "Anthony Mackie is:" which is something I find extremely arrogant of him. Look for the names of yesterday Arnold Schwarzenegger, Silvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise and so on. Look how many people Marvel helped have the breakthrough, if he can complain about not having a household name is because Marvel made him something, without Marvel he would probably be "That guy I eventually saw in a movie". 2-) The main issue today is with film budget, time and price. Tell me: How can tickets price be cheaper if every movie is 2:30 hours long? I can't tell you the last time I watched a movie in an Streaming platform because is a commitment of probably the rest of my sunday night. If I star at 19:00 by the end of the movie is already time to sleep, I can't do ANYTHING else! Now compare this with DCAU with animated movies of 1:15 hours? I can watch a tight movie, go back and play Spider Man in PS4 and still get time to shuffle a few UKposts videos. Also everything is overly expensive. Look at Star Trek Discovery, does Star Trek First Contact had that level of fx? Remember when TNG had a set with a carpet? And that's just to say of TV! Do movies really need to cost 300 million? The Wrath of Kahn had and insanely tight budget, Aliens had the executives monitoring the set in order to save money, limiting budget leads to creativity and directors choosing on what to spend. Also 2 hours movies should earn this and should justify the gamble for studios. I keep thinking while I'm watching Seinfeld and seeing them going to the movies and deciding there what they would watch, can't we see the problem we are in? In order to go to the movies Jeremy Jahns must give at least an Awesometacular because it's expensive, and it's expensive because it lasts 2:20 hours and last that long because studios invested +200 million so they feel movie goers should think it was money well spent, it's a vicious circle!

The studio system, then the star system, now the streaming platform system, and the distributors are doing what they do no matter which we have. Why are we pretending that there is some ideal state of complete freedom of choice that people aren't being allowed to have because of these arrangements? Audiences are built, and today that means advertising and critic endorsements and cinematic universe brand names. Normal people don't sit down and analyze hundreds or thousands of entertainment options to get one that reflects their deepest inner desires. That's time-consuming and absurd, and if it did exist, they would probably choose to watch what everyone else is watching or what they watched before, and wouldn't choose whatever we think they should want to watch. There will be an infrastructure that guides people's choices. This isn't a bug.
