The popularity and success of Tesla has proven there is demand for electric cars. Automakers are investing millions into an electric powered future. Last year, 143 new EV’s launched around the globe. Analysts predict record growth of EV sales in 2021, especially in Europe and China. But in the US, electric vehicles are less than 2% of autos sold annually. Several hurdles remain for the market to really take off and one of the biggest, is charging. CNBC explores the current state of electric charging and how automakers like Tesla, GM and companies like Chargepoint and Electrify America are adding charging infrastructure to increase electric vehicle adoption.

@Catsrules1
@Catsrules1 3 роки тому
Tesla may have an open patent but every other EV manufacturer has already standardized on a single plug it is just Tesla that hasn't switch over, because it wasn't their plug. (This is only in the US). Tesla is the Apple of charging. Everyone is on USB C and Tesla is hanging out with it's Lighting cable. However that said Tesla is the largest EV seller so they might be able to force the market to go to their standard instead. But I think we might get government involvement at some point. I would hate to have a world where we have EV charging stations but only some work for your car, or we have charging stations with 50 cables 1 for each car.
@TheAirsoftknowledge
@TheAirsoftknowledge 3 роки тому
Catsrules1 the difference here is, Tesla has much larger and standardized charging network as well as the fastest and most powerful chargers. Other companies are stuck on the older technologies when it comes to charging, so in fact, I would say Tesla is opposite of Apple in the sense that all these other car companies are stuck on “micro usb” when in the reality Tesla is the only company using “USB-C”. Tesla is the innovator here, and companies should be following Tesla’s lead, not the other way around🤷‍♂️

For those who are familiar with the metric system: At 2:38: "Tesla's Model S leads the industry with a range of 647 kilometers, while other manufacturers can be anywhere from 160 to 400 kilometers per charge. And Lucid Motors new EV sedan is expected to have a range of 832 kilometers." At 3:36: "While most other companies are brand neutral and can charge any type of EV, there are three major types of charging. Level 1 and Level 2 are most common in homes, workplaces, and public charging areas. They charge between 3.2 to 32 kilometers of range per hour. DC fast charging or a level 3 can deliver 96 to 128 kilometers of range in roughly 20 minutes." On screen at 3:40: "Level 1: 120-volt: 3.2-8 kilometers // Level 2: 240-volt: 16-32 kilometers // Level 3: 480-volt: 96 to 128 kilometers" At 7:40: "The distance that we have between the sites, it's already about 112 kilometers on average. And already today we have 96 percent of Americans, they actually live in within 192 kilometers from our site. So we are young, actually, but we are growing fast." At 11:25: "A study by the U.S. Department of Energy found electric vehicles could raise national power consumption by 38 percent by 2050. The amount of energy needed affects the cost for the customer to calculate the cost per kilometer of an EV depends on the battery type and the cost of energy." At 12:09: "Paying by kilowatt hour is similar to paying by the liter at gas stations." On screen at 13:37: "Battery percentage: 125 km, temperature: 11.7 °C" A shoutout for #CNBC to switch to the metric system.

OK at the moment it is still early days with only a decade of anything like real investment in money and technology so not yet the real deal but getting close. An electric motor from day one is a far more powerful, reliable and efficient than a combustion engine with far fewer parts and no noise or pollution. The capacity/range and weight of the battery has been their only drawback but that is changing and the first 400-500 mile cars are starting to appear and will slowly come down in price to the point that by the end of this decade most people fearful of electric cars will look back and wish they bought one earlier.

I have owned and driven my Nissan LEAF (fully Electric Vehicle) since 2017. In my home city of San Antonio, TX, I noticed that there was a small but decent EV Charing Station infrastructure here. However in early 2019 I noticed that some of the charging stations were actually being shut down or removed. This concerned me yet thankfully Chargepoint installed their own EV stations in those places and many times they are free or simply cost $1 per hour of charge. I routinely "fill up" my EV on $2 of charge or in a few places with no cost at all. I strongly wish the US and my home state can use policy and government funds to bolster the slim EV charging station network. This will encourage more buyers of EV's, which by the way, have incredibly small maintenance costs; no oil changes, less moving parts, less to repair.

They only ever take hours if you’re using a home charger and you want to go to 100%, if you’re using your car like you would every day, charging over night would still get you a full charge, but the last 20% of battery takes as long to fill as the first 80% most of the time, so on a road trip you could stop at a fast charger and add 200 miles of charge in 30 mins as long as you don’t try to fill your battery everytime you stop.

Also re. charging stations - in suburbs (which is most of the US), you don't need more than a couple of charging stations as everyone can just charge at home. Most likely it will also be closer to the highway so people can just pop into town, charge up and go. For those around the city, they can just hop over to this if needed rarely or just charge at home. In larger cities you will have need for more charging stations because people will park on the street or in public garages with charging stations there. What I see then is just Super charging stations along Interstates and places like say a large mall in the town/city along with destination chargers at hotels and other business areas.

Not sure if by 'slow charger' you mean Level 1 or Level 2. But Level 2 chargers would be perfect @ shopping, movies, zoos, restaurants, etc. - places you might spend an hour or 2, maybe more. For any public charger, you need to unplug once your battery is full. If not for etiquette's sake, then to avoid the 'squatting' fee for remaining connected. Having to watch your state of charge while trying to enjoy a movie would be a hassle. Better to slow charge and just recoup the miles you expended getting to your destination - and probably some extra miles for the return home.

@ScrapKing73 3 роки тому
@@SDGreg You only responded to half my comment (and only the half that could make Tesla look better), as I mentioned both heavier and longer. A small difference in curb weight (7.4%) paired with a significant difference in car length = a significant combined difference. Even if the curb weight is only 7.4% lower, if you took a busy highway and lopped 7.4% off of all the cars it would be a significant difference to the wear and tear on that highway. Using your 2019 example, length is 4140mm vs 4700mm, so 12% shorter. Lop 12% off of all the cars on a busy highway, and you could fit a lot more cars in it, making much better use of public space. Ditto parking cars on a curb, you could fit more parked cars if they were all 12% shorter. So yes, these numbers add up. Width wasn't previously mentioned, but it's 1800mm vs. 2009mm, so the Kia is 10.4% narrower. Despite being shorter and narrower and lighter, it's boxy shape means it has more convenient internal space for my uses. So to answer your question, yes, I'm aware. :)

As a 2020 Tesla Performance Model Y owner using Tesla's Gen 3 Wall Connector (Level 2) at home, I receive over 40 miles per hour on an 60 amp circuit providing 48 amps. At the 3:51 min mark on your video, you state that you receive 10-20 miles per 1-hour of charge with a 240 volt level 2 charger. Level 2 charging can provide a wide range of charging (miles per hr) depending on the amount of amperage you're providing (30, 40, 50, 60) as I stated above. At the 3:58 min mark on the video, you explain that level 3 chargers can provide 60-80 miles of range in roughly 20 minutes. Tesla's new V3 Superchargers can provide 75 miles of range in 5 minutes or 1,000 miles per hour which was stated on Tesla's website on March 6, 2019. I think you should differentiate between Tesla's Supercharger infrastructure and 3rd party charging stations. Thank you!

For example 128 KiloWatts = 32 amp x 4,000volts. So the transformers can simply ramp up/down the voltage to meet the demand. NOT have these crazy expensive AC-to-DC converters for each charger unit. I can see 2 scenario's high-voltage direct DC charging at numbers similar to gas stations, or class 2 chargers so ubiquitous that they are at most parking spots so every time you park you can top off your charge for however long you're there be it 45 minutes or 4 hours. The only way the 2nd can work is if the utilities put up those chargers and they can talk to your car and just add it to your electric bill as if you're charging at home. If individual municipalities do this they'd have to make you pre-pay for a set amount of charge like a parking meter.
@frankcoffey
@frankcoffey Рік тому
Ease of use is a big problem. Even UKposts reviewers that are experts have issues just determining how to pay. Cell phone networks fixed that a long time ago with the roaming concept. Public charging stations need the same type of agreement so consumers can just plug-n-go and only need one account to do that.

These consumers that can't figure out how to charge the EV are a bit slow . If you can figure out how to charge your phone you can charge your EV.

Yes it is, until the oil companies consider it no longer viable to extract and refine it due to falling demand. Shell themselves have stated that we saw peak oil demand in 2018. Since then there has been a steady -albeit slow - decline in demand Worldwide.......

Well now that Tesla has the tech in hand and has everything in motion a year and two will go by fast, Running further and further ahead, people will not care about ' having to learn to plug in ' when reaching cost parity. It comes down to economics Tesla will have an extremely solid cost margin lead and advantage in branding. 2025 is too far for GM, may be too late.

Good piece, although the DC charging speeds for Teslas aren't correct. Typical speeds are 100-140 KW/H, so a 50 KW/H-200 mile charge takes about 25 minutes. Also, home charging at 240V is at 29-44 MPH.

The issue is more price than charging infrastructure. If you look at the car auto sales, non-truck sales consist primarily of cars that sell for less than $30k. EVs (except the Smart) are all over $35k.
