How The Four-Day Workweek Could Change The Future Of Work

Рік томуThe idea of a four-day or shorter workweek is gaining momentum worldwide - a big thanks to the remote work boom during the Covid-19 pandemic.
A recent study from 4 Day Week Global, a nonprofit group that has been conducting four-day week pilot programs in several countries, found that employees expressed satisfaction with their overall productivity and performance.
"The idea of reducing work time has been around for quite some time," said Charlotte Lockhart, founder and managing director at 4 Day Week Global. "However, it is real now. We have thousands of companies around the world that are actually reducing work time in one way or another."
Shortening the workweek to four days isn't a good fit for every company, however. Alter Agents, a market research company, based in Los Angeles, found it didn't suit their employees.
"What happened after 10 weeks was that our most valuable metrics, which were employee health, and mental health, had declined in our [before and after] survey, " said Rebecca Brooks, CEO at Alter Agents. "There are a lot of reasons for that, but ultimately, the goal was to make our employees' lives easier, and we were making them more complicated."

I fully support a 4 day work week and a 3 day weekend. I legit don’t feel like 2 days is enough for days off because usually I have to choose one of the days to relax and the other to get things done.

@@eligreg99 I'm over 45. Half if my friends aren't dead. Having no money or a defined goal to retirement is mentally stressing. Nothing is promised, nothing was for me or my parents. If you promise people a guaranteed future they will just lower the bar and do the minimum and complain anyway and just ask for more while doing less. I've managed to work at least 6 days a week for 20 years and I began working when I was 8. I've always had discretionary funds that nobody else had. Finally when I hit 44, I turned off all the extra work and used the money for investments which provides me with discretionary funds. I bought so much "stuff" I don't really need any more. All the extra goes to investing and I invest in green products and areas where the government has let the people down and medical. I'm not rich yet. Every rich person I know works at least 12 hours a day 6-7 days a week. They play hard too. The common element in us is that we do work we are passionate about. If you aren't doing that, you just want do work less and complain because you are more like a drone. Work doesn't have to mean, punch a clock and put your head down and type for 8 hours. If that's you, you made it that way.

I don’t think this is applicable for the entirety of the “society”. 4 days work week only applicable for salary. If counting hourly laborers as well, then where do you draw the line of overtime? If there is overtime, do that get 1.5x the 32 hours condensed from 40 hours hourly rate? It’s something we all want. But how practical is it applicable for the entire “society”. Plus, as the video pointed out, it’s not an universal solution for all jobs.

I used to work 4 days / 10 hour shifts Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Man-oh-man was it the best!!! I didn’t have any worries or fears of having to use PTO or take time off of work just to go to doctors appointments during the weekday.

Don't take your eyes off the PRIZE ..... no matter what the distractions maybe be around you. UNDERSTAND YOUR PURPOSE, I went from living an average life to making over 63k per month. It's amazing. THE 4 DAYS WORK WEEK Adult lives has it ups and downs, but it can truly be amazing. I am among the luck ones who do not (at least for the moment!) miss being a child. That being said, I think that a lot of people are stressed in their adult lives with paying the bills, commuting to work, having to be competent and efficient at the work place most of the time… I think that the adult life can easily be much better for all of all, and please let point explain how and why: In my humble opinion, the work life isn’t balanced with the personal life. Working 5 days per week for 40 years is way too much, and does not give us enough free time to relax, enjoy our friends and family, do sport, take care of our diet, develop personal projects, engage in local associations … Imagine you could have the Friday, Monday, or Wednesday free. You could more become a fulfilled version of yourself, dive into these personal projects, take care and spend time of your loved ones, and recover from work. Other reasons for considering the 4 days work week: studies has proven that working 4 days a week, with the same salary, does not negatively impact the overall productivity of the company: workers are happier, more productive, and more implicated into doing their job. Less commuting at work, which results in less time spent stuck in the traffic and less emission of carbon dioxide. More time to spend our moneys, and contribute to the whole economy. I recall the formula of the Gross Domestic Product: GDP = C + I + G + E - M, where C designs the private consumption. Restaurants, movie theater, grocery stores … make by far their best turnover during weekends. For all these reasons, I do firmly believe that we need to implement the 4 days work week for both white and blue collar jobs (exception made maybe very physical demanding jobs), as it is already the case in Islande, and in some companies in Belgium and Spain, the first step being implementing it in Europe. nice i personally feel like a four day week will be beneficial not only to the employees but also the employers great content on your channel, I’m 53 and my wife and I reached $1M net worth in 2017, five years later it’s $2.4M. Our yearly salary is a little over $100K. We drive older cars, cook at home, eat leftovers, and have 2 in college. We saved for college and our boys help by working. They will graduate debt free.

@Alexander Webber That’s right, I started investing sometime in 2018 and by late 2021, I pulled out a profit of over $750,000 with no prior investing knowledge or skill, I was basically just following the guidelines set by my financial advisor, so you don't necessarily need to be a perfect investor or do the hard works, just have a professional who guides & mentors you.

If you'll notice they talk about Ford. On an assembly line, I might be able to crank it up and get more if people were alert. Where I think this is going. Shift work. People think they will get "three day weekends", nope, random days here and there. Shift times that give more human coverage around the clock. Productivity compensation so you'll get a low base pay and a percentage derived top up. Companies can agree to a hard minimum top up but getting pay balanced once a month might not arrive in time for the bills. Split shifts. Work from 8-12 and 6-10.

My company has everyone work a uniform 4 day workweek with fridays as a part of the weekend. The longer days can sometimes drag (especially in the shorter winter days) but getting three full days to myself to travel, shop, or rest is 100% worth it.

I'm 72 and when I saw that a 4 day work week wasn't going to happen during my lifetime, I chose a short 20 year working career and retired early including 10 years of retirement when I was 35 instead of living my whole life as a wage slave. The part (5 years) of my career I enjoyed the most was going to sea as a ship's engineer because after 3 months at sea, I had 3 months off to play and travel. Life is too short to give away any more than you have to earning a living.

This really should be implemented as soon as possible. We are way overworked, and that's saying something when considering the labor intensive jobs people around the world in less developed countries have to do everyday 7 days a week with no breaks.

@@willcookmakeup then really what we need is flexible working arrangements. If you work better with longer work hours on fewer days and I work better with regular hours across more days, then it’s clear a one size fits all approach won’t be optimal for everyone.

@@leonguyen7139 that’s what they’re proposing in this video but a 40 hour work week is standard. I used to work at a hospital with 10 hour shifts so we had to work 4 days to reach our required 40 hours. That’s what OP is saying, too.

The thing we really need to do, make sure that people are compensated enough where a 32-40 hour work week provides enough for them to live on. Otherwise even more people will end up taking two jobs to support themselves.

As a 4 day workweek worker I can say that I CANNOT go back! I get three whole days to do as I want! I still work the 40 hrs but given that with all previous jobs I had I spent at least an hour commuting I don't really mind the long workday. They just increased it to 5 days 11.5 hrs a week for the holidays and I feel sick, I cannot believe I used to work like this normally. Can't wait for it to go back to normal. Please please please normalize this! Having a non weekend day off is amazing when making doctor/car maintenance/personal appointments.

I remember in Junior High School 1965, my general business teacher telling us we would be working four day weeks and have more leisure time with three day weekends. LOL It never happened. I retired in 2017 and worked five and six days a week my entire life. Nice to see this pipe dream is still around.

whereas in Japan they are really overworked and even jumping from a building to end one's life is happiness. reduction in working hours is absolutely necessary, it really reduces stress.

Great video, its been something I've been talking about a lot lately. As a guy with chronic fatigue, 5 days is becoming harder and harder to manage for me. My mental health is better after every long weekend. As for the one guy who said some people may find themselves more stressed working a 4 days schedule, I think there are solutions to that. For places that are open M-F, they could potentially still stay that way, and have half the staff have mondays off, and half the staff have fridays off. Then if someone really wants to stay on the 40 hour schedule, they could keep doing so.

Alter Agents should have asked employees to choose if they want Monday off or Friday off. If people can pick any day of the week it becomes chaotic for co-workers and stressful for the individual if the days off are not consecutive eg. If you chose Tuesday off, you clocked in on Monday, Tuesday (mentally) your brain is still clocked in or spending a significant amount of time planning the rest of the week so you don't actually feel rested in between.

Better than the 4 day work week is letting employees have flexibility with when and where they work. Need to start 2 hours late on Monday, Wednesday, Friday or 3 hour lunch on occasion? Fine, make up the hours at another time in the week.

I often work 4 10s and I freaking love it! But even working 10s I’m off at 4:20 so I have plenty of day left. I’m a person with lots of hobbies that are time consuming so having a 3rd day off is amazing. Now there are some weeks where we do 5 10s or this past week we did 5 8s. We always have the ability to get at least 40 hours, and we have pretty generous PTO in my company and if we don’t wanna give up our 3rd day off that weekend we can use our PTO, and if that PTO puts us over 40 paid hours we actually earn the OT on that PTO which was mind blowing when I started. It’s also important to state that I work in a factory. I am a sewist in a custom furniture company with several hundred employees. The company is able to do this because the employees are happy, paid well, well rested, and therefore more productive when we are there.

It’s just not practical especially in healthcare… every time a healthcare professional works longer hours, studies have shown the higher risks for mistakes which risks patients and even staff and the decision making process. I highly doubt someone’s efficiency is the same after 12 or 18 hours and my own doctor told me that long hours don’t benefit the patients… Also not only patient risks, but what about you driving after a 12 hour day? You just risked people on the road and put them in danger…

I’ve worked 9/80 (every Friday), 4/10’s, and regular 8 hours. I found that the 4/10s were the easiest because everyone wanted to get their time in and lock in a 3 day weekend. I.e. it was almost guaranteed people were not only online (not taking random PTO/vacation) but also available all day. Making it easier to get them in meetings and working sessions. Additionally, they were motivated to get things done. I.e. focus on the task at hand . It really worked . Don’t get me wrong those long days were rough. But, the rewards seemed to benefit everyone.

The problem is skilled jobs are treated as unskilled jobs. It’s not maintainable to keep up continuous growth . Additionally cognitive use is taxing in a different way. It’s also more difficult to measure. They need to focus on that.

It is time in this country where we need to stop thinking we must live and die on the job. People need to give a quality work day and go home to their non-work activities. We need to move away from wearing people out mentally and physically while working in sub-standard work conditions. The days of working from sun up to sun down are over. However much I want this, I think that for many companies it's just not going to be practical. One of the interviewees mentioned taking the same amount of hours from a 5-day work week and compressing it into 4 days. But there are many companies don't have 'units' of work that can be shifted around. You can't serve Friday's customers on Thursday night instead, so adding two hours to the day before is redundant. In offices, it's great. You have a project to complete for that week and you stay longer each day to finish it a day earlier. But for warehouse workers, retail workers, journalists etc., I think managers aren't going to be convinced of the benefits.

There's clearly an assumption here that all necessary services will still be staffed, either by 5/6-day workers, or that we'll get some massive surge of hiring to cover the shifts. The former is inequitable, and the latter is unlikely. Folks don't realize how far-reaching this would be - it can work for a single workplace, but it's not workable for society as a whole.

And is every place/category supposed to agree on the same 4 days, or would you just have to hope that the service you need is available on the days you aren't at work (or are at work)? Folks who say this makes sense clearly didn't grow up back when everything was closed on Sunday, or when "banker's hours" literally meant you only had access to your money M-F 8a-3p. Society has become accustomed to 7-days' services, with 12/18/24hr staffing - I don't see that as a change ppl are willing or able to sacrifice.

As a truck driver I reduce the amount of hours I have worked down from 5days / 60 hours a week to about 40 to 45 in 4 days. Its very nice to have time to spend time with family and get things done at home. Working 60 hours a week i didn't have time for anything. But my real question is how can i get 40hrs of pay in 32 hours?

I've worked 4 day work weeks years ago & it was great. What some businesses assume is that customers & their businesses financially would lose out only being open 4 days a week. They could give the employees an option. Have the business open 5 days a week & give the employees an option to be off like Monday, Wednesday or Friday. I always took off on Monday which worked much better for me.

I think in some industry fields, a four day work week would be feasible and probably beneficial. However in some fields it's just not feasible, or at least easy to reset schedules to. For example, I am a grocery store manager. We have deliveries 7 days a week and each department must receive and process each supply shipment. Each department manager has to coordinate resources and staff with various other departments each day. There are simply too many variables, such as late trucks, staff call-outs etc, to only have managers work 4 days a week. Food is an emotional buying experience for consumers and not maintaining fully stocked shelves quickly turns into a negative buying experience for customers. I don't see how, in the grocery field, would a 4 day work week be successful. However I do think I could be very impactful in other fields.

It will be harder to implement in some places, but not impossible. Your work may need to hire a couple more managers, and keep schedules staggered so there is always at least one available during opening hours. Keep in mind though some people in the 1930s probably thought a 5 day work week was impossible too

I think the issue you're having is from a standpoint of trying to see it as 4 days straight and 3 days straight. That doesn't have to be the case. MTRF can be a schedule. SSMT can be a schedule. SMTR can be a schedule. It very much can work in every industry if there were enough employees and you are willing to get creative with the schedule. I personally feel like every employee should have at least one weekday off for important things like doctor appointments. And don't get me wrong, I know a lot of the older generation prefer to work 50-80 hours a week and that's great for them, but I would have to tell them simply, "we don't do that here, but you're more than welcome to get a second job if you prefer no free time" But as someone in their 30's, I am very aware of my mortality and the inability of my body to keep producing efficiently with a 5 or 6 day work week. Also, I'd prefer to be around people that love me more often than people I simply work with.

Everyone saying they want a 4-day workweek is assuming that society will still function M-F. But what about schools, doctor's offices, professional businesses, etc - all those services that people expect to still be open during the week, whether they have a day-off or not? They would a need to hire 15-20% more people to cover the same hours, which is unlikely given the current & projected labor shortage. The 5-day workweek is baked into every facet of American society - unless folks are good with kids getting 20% less school, or having one fewer "weekday" to handle personal/professional business, this is one of those "for me, but not for thee" situations.

Can't you better split the workload between the 7 days? Why does each department have separate shipments? Bulk them to save on Gas, transport fees and the like and you'll increase the efficiency of your store.

I worked 4 ten hour days, 30 years ago. it was great. You've already got ready for work, commuted to work, and traveled back. I was younger then. All my co-workers were also young. We did electrical in a factory setting. Productivity did not change in the final two hours, as it was measurable output. It might have actually been more productive, because Friday afternoons were not productive.

Very insightful segment. I work in IT fixing computers for agencies. The agencies all practice this in various ways. Right now, they only have to come onsite 2 times a week so they are hybrid. During the summers, they have the option of having PTO every summer Friday that they can use throughout those 2 months. I think these ideas are really great. I just wish that IT was allowed to participate in the same ways. Instead, I've found I've had to finesse my way into just a hybrid situation where I just do not go into an office on Fridays (barring any real emergencies that cannot wait until Monday). I would love a 4 day work week. My mental health flourished during the pandemic & I know it would continue if I didn't have to work so much.

This was the first time I heard the concept of productivity is measured by employee happiness. Being in manufacturing for 20+ years, I never heard of this. am all for a four day workweek by the way. I think they should abolish exempt and non-exempt classifications and make everyone hourly. The exempt classification should never have been created.

With manufacturing, output is more easily linked to hours worked. This isn't really the case with stuff like software and engineering, which arguably rely just as much as creativity. Many innovations in those fields are just because someone asked why, and someone else worked out an answer and implementation

I've never worked a 4 day regular hour shift but I have worked a swing shift (3pm-midnight). Despite it hard to have time with family/friends and dating I actually found myself feeling healthier and happier than working regular business hours. I got to sleep in, take my time in the morning. Got my workout and errands all done before work. Anyone else?

I had a similar experience but the opposite shift, I work 5 days and start work around 4am, it can be hard but it’s helped me develop healthier habits because it helps me wake up early on my days off and it forces me to go to bed around 7 when I would normally like to watch tv. I also get out early enough to get stuff done.

It didn’t work for that one company because everyone picked their own day off. It has to be a common day off otherwise it will be too chaotic and folks will feel like they are falling behind if they are off and everyone else is working, causing more anxiety and increasing the likelihood of checking email during their off day.

"Some people want to work 50 hours", the issue is that it then becomes normalized and everyone has to participate. At healthy workplaces this is heavily discouraged.

I support a 4 day work week. Ive had my job for over a decade now. When I was on 4 days it felt like the perfect amount. I had enough time to run errands, clean up the house, and enough time to decompress. The 4 days of work felt like it was long enough and I was ready to check out for the week. But when I went to 5 (mainly because I had to as my roommates took off) it felt like I was always at work. Like my home was just a little get away safe space vs where I actually lived. These were 8 hour work days mind you.

One of the best things in this video was the fact that people work differently. I had a friend in a previous job who could get her work done in 25 hours as opposed to the 40 that others needed. If I were a boss, I would assign the tasks that I needed done and the date that it had to be completed, and would pay people the same amount regardless of how long it did or did not take them to do it. E.g. Job pays $2000 per week. And your hourly pay would be based on how long it took you to do the work.

As a registered nurse, we already work 3-12 hour or 4-10 hour days. There's pros and cons. A pro would be more days off during the week. A con would be your day is pretty much just working. Like we would work 7 am to 7 pm so you'd need an understanding partner at home to take care of the kids if you have them. But if given the choice, as a single male, I'd rather work 3 to 4 longer days for a 3 day weekend.

I get what you mean. im 12-12. so the hours are better then 7-7. but i like it. lunch gets prepped on your first or second day off. you do your 12. sleep for about 9 hours and the other 3 are for commuting presumably and whatever small thigns can get accomplished. I do think the pros outweigh the cons though.

Google C-Team commented on this years ago. There is not only burnout to consider, and less attachment to the companies we work for, but also a shrinking amount of work to do. When we automate all the things, there will be less work to do. That doesn't mean there needs to be less people working because if there is no income, there will be no demand. Staggered 4 day work weeks make a lot of sense.

My job offers flex schedules and I do 4.5 days, 40 hours. I would definitely work 11 hours a day to have a 3-day work week. Not sure how many companies will keep wages the same for less work time though. However, wages have not increased much so it could be about equal anyway 😂

YES Even the Belgium's scenario would be fine to me : In Belgium, you still work 40 hours (you add 2 hours in each remaining day, let's say Monday to Thursday for instance, and your Friday is free). And you keep the same wage, of course.

I really think work is important for most of us and allows us to feel like we are doing something. But seriously. Due to some events I don't work as much currently but will again at the start of 2023. I gotta to admit not working so much is pretty nice. I still to a extent think hard work and dedication can be good. But I don't understand some people who would call us lazy for wanting to work less. There is just so much more to life than work.

Amen! There is so much more to life than work for real. I took a year off of teaching and decided to work part-time after being home with my newborn for 6months. It was really nice to have something to do and I decided when I would come in and how many hours to work. I am back to work full time currently and I pratically have to mentally prepare myself to relax with the two days off. I litterally have to tell myself to turn it off when I get home from work or when the weekend starts, My life is not just work! The balance is really off and I hate it. So my 5 year plan will include something that is not as demanding and it has a better work life balance for sure. Thank s for the comment

I am a ups driver and 4 day work weeks would seem good but understand this nobody at any level is ever at work now. Since the pandemic late night restaurants you would go to randomly or regularly with friends or a date or whatever aren’t open because everyone wants less work, calling for things like bank customer service,tech questions that you need answered at night and not 9-5 in that companies time zone and other small simple things that we took for granted for decades are not going to be here anymore for anyone unless your willing to pay a way higher price for everything. A lot of things in the world seem to be in favor of white collar workers and it’s showing people everywhere blue collar labor is dying

The reality is this country (USA) was built on the back of people working long hours and weeks over the last 200-300 years. The generation today assumes everything on this planet just pre-existed somehow with no knowledge of what it took. Skyscrapers, infrastructure, housing, transportation, technology, inventions were all created from a working force of people not saying, "welp, 32 hours I'm done!" Selfishly I like it, but I admit... selfishly. However to get where we are today, and to continue on a linear path not just stagnated with the status quo *will* require some long-hard hours. It's just facts.

I work a 4.5 day week (9 hrs M-Thr, 4 hrs F) like the UAE and feels amazing to have most of my Friday available to take care of errands and then enjoy my evening/night off. However, I can't get the 4 day, 10 hr work week at my company since they think it will cause burnout. So reducing the full time hours requirement to 32 or even 36 would be very impactful.

Here's another idea that would be nice: let people work 32 hours a week, but spread out over 5 days. Often times I run out of brain cells for the day after only 6-7 hours of work, but in that system, it wouldn't matter. I'd get that last hour or two for myself instead of wasting it being unproductive on the job.

To be frank, a 4 day work week would work wonders for ppl like me who have multiple injuries including chronic pain. I was born with LCP, a bone disease that affects my hip and the amount of issues that has stemmed from it has really made life difficult for me. I now need a hip replacement as the ball joint in my femur keeps degrading and also affects my posture where I essentially "lean" to the right because my right leg is shorter than my left when I stand up straight. Lower back problems comes from it and on top of needing a hip replacement I also need to get my right knee replaced at the same time as well. But because I am so young, I was given the choice to hold off on the surgery until the pain becomes more and more severe, I currently work in the warehouse for a dealership 9 hours a day mon-fri. The amount of walking, standing, lifting and bending takes a heavy toll that by the 3rd day or so of the work week I become very slow and slugish trying to literally work through the pain and my lower back gets weaker and weaker. At this point I need a desk job so that my pain threshold goes from an 8/10 to a 3/10. I just can't find anything where just the minimum requirements aren't absurd.

WHAT about Manufacturing? I work alongside a company that has people physically building things and as we grow, having crews for weekends. Does this work for us who actually MAKE things? Most of what you are citing includes design, which is DRAWING and thinking, but not actually creating physical things. THIS MUST BE TESTED. IT IS the PINNACLE of what 5 day workweeks will be fought by.

I work 4 days a week but put in 5 days worth of hours. It’s brutal but it works. The work has to get done. And you need the hours to do it. Don’t expect 40 hours worth of work in 32 hours. That’s just giving a raise - it doesn’t amount to much else if the work expectation doesn’t change.

Anesthesia still has an onset time that does not care about my schedule, as do the procedures themselves. This video is too all-encompassing and there’s limitations to what can be generalized. Not an opinion - these are facts. Some fields require additional hours within a shorter work week to maintain output.

@@cameronhetzler5407 Thank you! The production of many blue-collar jobs is almost linearly dependent upon physical labor too. Demanding the same amount of work for fewer hours would be damn near impossible.
