TEDx Talks

9 років тому

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Storyteller
Donald Davis was born in a Southern Appalachian mountain world rich in stories. "I didn't learn stories, I just absorbed them," he says as he recounts tales and more tales learned from a family of traditional storytellers who have lived on the same Western North Carolina land since 1781. Davis remembers, "I discovered that in a story I could safely dream any dream, go anywhere I pleased, fight any foe, live or die. My stories created a safe experimental learning place.
And that is the way that Donald Davis has approached all of his learning places...as a graduate of Duke University; as a retired Methodist minister; as featured teller at the Smithsonian Institution; as a guest host for the National Public Radio Program "Good Evening"; and as father of four sons. For Donald Davis storytelling "...is not what I do for a living...it is how I do all that I do while I am living.”
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

One of the best talks I’ve seen on storytelling. As a memoir coach myself, I so relate to this message. Owning and telling our stories is one of the most powerful things we can do.

The video is not about storytelling. It about the rocks that sit on top of our lives. These rocks are living to have their stories told over and over again.

As a storyteller and coach I found this story / lesson profound. These are stories that a life can be built around. I wish I had heard this when I was a young man. I will share with others at my yearly youth leadership program and Stories that Matter program. Well Done Donald! Profound use of story.

This story moved me to tears, though this is not the first time I've heard it. Donald Davis is America's greatest story teller and a national treasure. He is also the nicest man you could want to know. If he is performing near you, you must go see him. This is one of my two favorite Donald Davis stories. The other, also told to Donald by his father, is about when Donald was born. I was fortunate to have heard Donald tell stories in person since around 1995.

Wow, this is so inspiring! So as a person who struggling with my storytelling skills, this is the biggest tip I learned from this ted talk. Tell the same story again and again from different perspectives. Do this until you live through all the different characters in that story. Do this until you feel like you are changing through your story.

Thank you Donald, you are a fabulous story teller, and very inspiring! In grade school I grew up hearing I would rather be dead than red in the head. Yep, I was a little freckled faced red haired girl. That to, changed who I was but I never talked about it much, I will now as I see how important it is to. Thank you , a message for everyone!!!

Tony Bennett played this for the UVA basketball team on the first day of practice for the 2018-2019 basketball season (after becoming the first #1 seed to lose to a 16 seed to end the previous season). It became the theme of the season, which ended in a national championship.

not a lesson in writing - but a lesson in coping with a disability - it's probably natural that the grandmother was behind it in some way - using talk as therapy or catharsis is more common among women - men tend to deal with trauma silently and alone
