This is amazing to me to watch. I have been trying to understand why my upstrokes sound so much higher/ more annoying than the songs I hear. I now understand that my angle is wrong on the upstroke. The sound is exactly the same when you show how to do it "wrong". This should be a game changer for me! Thanks so much for the tip!

Due to an injury, i have limited feeling in my thumb and it does not sweat. You'd be surprised how much that bit of sweat matters for purposes of surface tension. I tried picks with banjo-type clips and picks with holes in them, but I've pretty much given up guitar in favor of keys and finger-style bass. I'm better at those anyway.

the plectrum is the least necessary guitar accessory in existence. quitting guitar because you can't use one properly is like quitting driving because you can't fill up the windshield wiper fluid.

I agree with some of these points (e.g., don't grip too tightly), but see them as general guidelines, and not set-in-stone rules. Sometimes you want to strum hard, and sometimes soft. I don't think my fingers brush the strings, either. One of the most important factors is how easy the player finds holding a plectrum. I've always struggled, due to having very dry skin, and they just drop out of my hand. I tried sticking small pads of abrasive paper onto the sides, with limited success. The best solution I've found is Fender Mojo Grips (I reviewed them the other day: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/aoReqIhtjHid2mw.html) which are effectively like "mobility aids" for people who can't hold picks. I saw a podcast in which Rhett Shull dismissed them as a beginner's toy, but he completely missed the point.

I’ve been a professional jazz guitarist for 42 years. I live in a dry climate and a few years ago started having trouble holding my pick. Fender Mojo grips saved the day 🤓

glue sand paper on it ,not the paper kind.
@trade0714
@trade0714 28 днів тому
I did that last year. I cut to shape and super-glued a small piece of high grit sandpaper across the top 1/2 of the pick on both sides. It's almost hard to drop the pick now. It makes it much easier to hold the pick lightly and let it hit the strings at opposite angles on downstrokes and upstrokes. It's easily better than those liquidy "grip" concoctions available to put on the pick.

Good advice but why bother, throw the flat pick away and use a thumb pick like Chet Atkins and learn to play with the fingers.
