In this series of videos I try to help those of you looking to become electricians choose the right path for you.
With so many courses available, all with varying amounts of time and cost, it is an absolute mind field on choosing which one is right for you, so imagine finding out that you aren't even an electrician at the end of it would be a huge blow... especially after getting yourself into debt for £6-8k plus.
In this video I discuss the industry preferred routes, and give you the guided learning hours for the courses, so that you can compare those against domestic installer courses, which could be as little as eight times faster, but you have to question what is missing in terms of knowledge and content.
In my next video I will cover the domestic installer courses, so that you can compare apples to apples

Great video. I am foreign electrician who at 40 years old wants to get into industry in UK. Looking at the job market in late 2022 all employers want is qualified and experienced with with emphasis on experienced. College course will get me qualified but I may never find a job in industry due to lack of experience. It seems that only real way in is apprentice way. Difficult working for minimum wage with mortgage and family tho.

I finished my apprenticeship in just 3 years exactly, I don’t know where everybody gets 48 months or 4 years from - started late in December 2015 , finished college day release for the 3 academic years (level 2/3 and 18th edition) in June 2018 - and by December 2018 I had my gold card. You can finish in the summer after 3rd year college if you really put your head down with portfolio

Nice one Adrian👍glad I’ve found this video as I’m wanting to re train as an electrician, I would have to go down the night school approach which I’m totally fine with.The only thing I’m struggling with is a college that actually provide the proper training course and proper end qualifications, I’m scared of been fobbed off with the bit of paper and actually not knowing g anything .as an adult learner I’m interested and actually want to learn and want to be able to do my own work and sign it off properly etc

There are many training providers that will sell you a worthless qualification. Stay away from the ones that advertise a worthless step 1 course that doesn’t mean anything. All you need is the CG2365 or the CG8202

@@Pure_electrical_training nice one Adrian cheers for that 🙌🏻🙌🏻 nice and clear thanks mate 👍👍 the reason I’m wanting to do it as I’ve used “registered” and non registered sparks in the past and seriously when I’ve seen the work that’s been done, I could of literally done a better job myself and when asking for certificates for let’s say a board change which is notifiable , I got the whole oh mate you don’t need any certificates they don’t mean anything and then me taking they’re word for it has bit me in the arse when selling the house, so I’d rather re train and do the job myself knowing that what I will do will be safe tested and certified and can bloody sleep at night 😂😭

Looking at courses, my level 2 was the 2365, my current level 3 is the 8202-30, which had replaced (in terms of funding throught SFE, the 2365 at level 3. I'm under the impression that I'll need to put the portfolio together however nowhere can you find information on it. The 5357 is the holy grail Apprenticeship and they are walked through the whole thing and given AM2 on a plate. Then there's the AM2, AM2S and AM2E or the ECW/MCA which again there isn't a massive amount of info out there Hopefully your series goes on to cover the points above (I still don't solidly what is after the 2365 and 8202)

I did the Part p course when it first came out i did it out of fear really, at the time everyone was terrified about this reg that reg and as a competent electrician or so they say(who can say this is beyond me anyway)i was pushed into doing it, anyway when i finished the course and realised that other trades on the course had become as qualified as me? i thought you know what as a electrician my trade as been devalued all the work and pain of going to collage for all that time prior was wasted, until i came across several Part P qualified shall we say conmen who had the part p but where in fact no more a spark than i am a Rockstar if you get my drift. I feel your pain Adrian. I have had a similar experience trying to be a fully fledged spark. I did it off my own back, 3 years at collage then did an NVQ only until the company went into liquidation and I never did the AM2 back then. I was so fed up with the industry I got away for a couple of years and got a degree. I then came back into the industry and I can not get the good jobs I want with peace of mind without the AM2 which I am now trying to attain along with the testing inspection. There is no short cuts into this trade and if you take short cuts and do not know how to test / install properly then you will probably show yourself up and struggle to be a very good electrician.

It can be a hard route and some people make it work, so it all depends on the individual and a bit of luck. But, consider this… Just because you have a piece of paper saying you passed some exams and a small bit of practical, does not mean you have knowledge, understanding, or experience. So a lot of employers will not take you on, unless you take apprentice money, as they still need to invest a lot of time and patience in your development. A lot of people end up working as agency workers, and almost no one will be invested in your development. It is a long slog

Feel sorry for some people who don’t have them experiences tho as I feel there’s a lot of dedicated and hard working people who would be passionate about doing it and in turn produce good levels of work it’s a shame there’s not a better route for adult learners

It’s never too late and an apprenticeship is still attainable and free. Even at your age. Hi there fella, I fully appreciate what you are saying, but I have got to disagree with you, and the reasons being I did a 6 month gas course and no apprenticeship, and have a well established business for 7 years now. And need to resist exams every 5years unlike sparks. And our pass mark was not 50-60 it was 90% the scenario you use is poor about the information to sticking is because the kids are not really that interested, or you don’t make it interesting fact. If you need to repeat the same stuff for years before it sticks you need to look at your teaching skills. All the best in what you are trying to achieve,
@Pure_electrical_training
@Pure_electrical_training 10 місяців тому
I would say that you only need to look at the state the gas industry is in, to realise that it has exactly the same issues as the electric. I’ve seen the standard many times of someone who has only completed a 6-month apprenticeship, and I wouldn’t let them work in anyone’s house that I know. Knowledge and ability comes with time, and there is no quick way around that. Have you heard of the Dunning-Kruger effect? Take a look. I would say that if you haven’t realised that there is more to your trade then you first thought after 6-months, and haven’t got to the slope of enlightenment, then I would suggest that you may still be at the peak of confidence. Everyone who knows there stuff in the gas industry, knows that not many people fail the ACS assessment. It’s just a tax on the profession.

You seem to demonise people taking short courses. You don't mention the apprentices who cant string 2 words together or the domestic installers that actually know more than 'qualified electricians'
@Pure_electrical_training
@Pure_electrical_training 11 місяців тому
I believe that the best level of knowledge is achieved over a long period of time, and that learning 4 days on the job, with one day at college tying it together, is the best way to learn. A course that lasts a few weeks is not sufficient to achieve that, and anyone that tells you it is, is either selling you the course, or has used this route themselves. Often, defending their inadequacies. However, you are right. Just because someone has done an apprenticeship doesn’t mean the training they received was good, or they were the right person to receive it. Also, with the way the training industry is setup, not many fail and are often pushed through to achieve statistics. Equally, there will be some people who go down the short course route and achieve greatness, deserving everything they get. Although, in my experience, these are few and far between, and due to their lack of training, are far worse due to their arrogance and self-belief. Whatever you think, or believe, the truth is that it’s the person who makes the qualification. Not the other way round, so why not make people earn their right to call themselves electricians, rather than giving that privilege away for cash.
