How to build a really SOLID shed

How to build an awesome shed AND for less than you can buy them for, also this is way more solid, it's insulated, is the exact dimensions you want and you can put the doors and windows (if any) where you like.
My main shed where all the other stuff is filmed was built in the same way and has been up for 7 years with no problems at all, now i went a bit fancie on the slate roof but you only live once haha.
There are no drawings for this as you make it to the sizes you wish.
Now i'm not a shed building channel so you should check out my other videos they are all good.

An important point about building a shed in a country with as much rain as England (where I live). Make provision for a gutter along the sides as otherwise the walls will rot quickly at the bottom where all the water runs off the roof. The polythene backing to the feather edge boards will speed up that process of rotting as the boards will not dry out readily. If you use polythene then you should nail the feather edge to vertical battens to create an air gap. This cost very little extra.
@philbutcher6959
@philbutcher6959 2 роки тому
There are so many issues with the way he did this, I think it best to just advise people to research elsewhere. They literally threw money away and wasted time (lead tucked underneath the slate? Plastic sheet against wood? No air gap? The whole weight of a slate and lead roof on a single timber over a wide door cavity? Huge gaps around expensive insulaton?). This is considered entertainment for some people, but please don't think it is good building advice - I'd hate to see people with less resources waste them.

Fascinating English construction style. Here in the US, we'd use galvanized steel or aluminum sheet metal for the drip edge and roof top flashing. Lead is certainly an interesting product to use. We would also have put the drip edge under the layer of water-proof membrane on the roof so water would drip over and off, but anyway, very cool project! I love how you built the really solid and insulated door!
@VanderCtruck
@VanderCtruck 6 років тому
The lead drip edge and roof top flashing should be parts of 1 meter max, with an overlay. Otherwise it will crack due to temperature changes.
@nine8nine

Lead is the traditional product to use I suppose. It's expensive over here so you get most people using alternatives. Colin was just going posh
@billys.3258
@billys.3258 6 років тому
It is the traditional method...as in, we haven't used these techniques widely in the US since the late 1940's. They are still used occasionally for remodeling and refurb of historical structures. Even very fancy homes would use soldered copper flashings, not lead. In the US you'd have to special order the lead and you'd be lucky to find a historical building specialist who'd know how to do this work. This is really keeping the older trades alive. Great shed!

This was the inspiration for the large and very solid shed I built this summer. I used treated 4x2s for the frame and went for a polycarbonate roof so there's plenty of light inside. I then installed a large Lister generator which powers the adjoining garage and probably, in time, the house. The shed floor is 6" thick reinforced concrete to cope with the weight of the generator and insulation in the walls reduces the noise.

The bottom wooden rule in the walls has probably rotted now. Normally you put a rubber strip underneath, alternatively, roofing paper between the wooden bars and in your case, the bricks. If you have them in pressure-impregnated wood, it will last even longer

Didn't like the look of just screws into bricks either. Nevertheless, my 6'x4' plastic shed is 60kg, so Colin's bigger shed with all that timber, ply, and slate must be somewhere in the region of 500kg to 1000kg. Yep, that's staying planted though a hurricane.

Truth. Great video. Our brilliant builder would fit right in and have a blast at "Slab City" in the Sonoran Desert of California. It's ready made for those with a sense of adventure and a desire to just create things like - underground bunkers covered with a shed.

Must be nice to know you could always fall back to doing DIY videos and take over the industry (no offense intended I know you can and are doing much more). Seriously, this is one of the best shed building videos I've ever seen. This is textbook content updated for a modern audience rather than the current offerings that resemble a TV show shoehorned into a digital platform, IMO. Really well done. Great use of the medium to your advantage which, I think, is the key reason your ceiling is so high. Thanks for providing such great content.
