Hey guys and welcome back to another guide and this time we're going back to the basics in this manifold guide, the reason for this is that with the new layout series, I feel this will be a good edition so that new players can come to here to see how manifolds are built rather than having to explain it in every video.
In this video we cover what they do as well as how to build them, on, below and above ground.
Now if you found this guide helpful or know it will be useful for new players, be sure to drop a thumbs up and if you do have any problems with your build let me know what's you're issue and perhaps I can help!
Do note that this guide aims to help new players and thus is a basics guide.

This was the single most useful satisfactory video I've watched. The hidden belting makes it look very sharp. How do you wire it? Underground?
@TotalXclipse

You can wire things from below, and I've covered that in a video but my prefered method is using wall joints, if you join me for the 5x5 challenge on twitch at some point (next week Wednesday and Friday 6pm - 10pm BST ) you'll see how nice you can make the wiring in factories... It's a challenge build so you have to be very careful with all the positioning. I think you'll appreciate it if you liked the underfed belts. :)

Fun fact, if you use the slowest belt that meets the requirements (if you need 15 a min use mk1 belts, if you need 100 a min use mk2 belts ect) and the fastest one you have for the main belts, and it will automatically back up the side ones. Running mk1 belts going to the machines and mk4 belts down the middle will result in 480 a min input, but 120 going off to the sides and 360 continuing down. Obviously this falls short after 8 machines but its enough to get you going.

Manifolds only become efficient when all except the last two machines are full of items. Doing this helps to get more machines running sooner, but more machines running means less excess to fill machines, so this actually makes manifolds even slower than normal. the fastest manifold setup is with high speed belts everywhere and smart splitters set to overflow down the manifold, so the machines fill one at a time. One exception to this would be if each machine needs exactly 60 or 120 items/min, but that's pretty rare if you do any underclocking.

17:10 when i invented that method to build (just bought the game at the steam release and had not watched any video before that did it that way) i "folded" also the outputs of the constructors back under the constructors themselves and didn't place walls at the tunnel. thus i had a really large area under the constructors to walk around, have additional belts (eg to supply the second half of a long row of constructors), and also have easy access to all the belts in case of upgrading them later. it is too narrow to crouch under the belts, but it's possible to run 1 or 2 steps and then slide under them :-) extending the principle to more complicated setups, i did a small (only 3x3 foundations, plus some "overhanging" lifts at two sides, total height 4 plus height of machines) layout with 6 smelters/constructors to make screws from ore with relatively perfect ratios (30>2x15>3x10>3x40=120), that would even be tilable when upgrading my impure iron to a MK2 miner and using a MK3 belt for screws: feeding ore in the center via lift to one smelter, splitting its output to two rod makers (1 lift down, split and possibly belt away surplus of ingots when screws back up, 2 lifts up), then in the center merge and split 2 outputs to 3 screw makers, and at the other side 3 lifts (once again "folded" under the constructors) and an underground merger to belt away the screws. my current problem: how do i build and connect a central storage (without causing too much spaghetti) where i can easily drop all the products from these small separate solutions, also get items for other such small setups or to handcraft something, and most of all also be able to manually insert/drop some surplus from my inventory to that system (especially when all storage is already full; i need logical combinators which stop belts/production when half full :-). is there some video which shows any help for such a system ?

@@TotalXclipse i'm just trying to setup my first coal plant. a single burner was easy to do, but despairing a bit with connecting pipes and cross-junctions to swimming non-aligned machines now. also finished all research and upgrades until end of tier4 except for quartz and of course oil. while waiting endlessly for the items to finish that i have to send to space, i tried reorganizing my factory and building some easily accessible storage (because requirements changed all the time and i often didn't know where to get or drop items from my inventory), which (to me) is more difficult than everything else :-) :-( building a bus (group or stack of belts) is easy, but how do i connect it efficiently and easily accessible to "storage in/out" ? and of course trains are not available yet either. oh well, finding out everything yourself should be the goal, but i currently try to get some shortcuts to this from yt when running out of patience because i can't quickly/easily build, delete and move setups by using blueprints (10k+ hours on factorio :-)

For the bottom fed manifold you can also, for easier access when upgrading, build in a seperate access to the spaces below, or above, the main floor. Sort of like maintenance "half-floors" in-between the main floors.

Hi good Sir, I followed your guide, Brilliant. Took a while to position the assemblers. As 1 or 2 would over lap the foundation, but they still connected fine to the splitter's with the MK3 lifts. But just fumbling about, I found that after putting a Storage there to test feed the line with Steel girders. I covered them perfectly over with those F-industries conveyor foundations ( I used the single holed sloping foundations) then covered those with the inverted ones and it sealed all over, splitters and all, below the level of the assemblers. The feed lines not interrupted, continued to feed though a neat hole. All covered. just the constructors and mk3 lift heads showing. Just looked neat and blended inside the foundations. I'm guessing but, maybe you could cover all conveyors completely into the foundations with them. (I'm SteelHorn on Steam. I'll pop examples pics on,) I bet You know this, but just in case. Godbless, stay safe.

I'm still pretty early game. I have yet to make steel ingots. I am currently setting up my first steel ingot line culminating in steel beams. This will be my first production line inside a building rather than out in the open. It takes a lot more time and resources to build inside, but it's much more satisfying. I'm going to strive to make my factories neat and tidy, but most importantly beautiful. I find the game a lot more rewarding to focus on making a factory that is very organized and looks good. It can be frustrating and a lot of work, but I find myself getting determined to make a line look and function just right and then I look at the clock and 5 hours have gone by. UPDATE: I got the steel beam line going. I love seeing all the raw resources go into the factory and the machines and spitting out products. Perhaps I will upload a quick clip of this factory in action. It's so satisfying to look at. NOTE: Make sure all of your conveyors are the speed you want as one tiny piece of slow conveyor can mess up your entire operation. lol
@mortache
@mortache 3 роки тому
Hey man I just realized that if the two splitters are stacked on top of one another you can just connect them directly without all this complications. You just need a slight distance between splitters and the machines. Manufacturers need more space than assemblers naturally
@natsirt9809
@natsirt9809 3 роки тому
Something I found out might be a little bit more efficient is a reverse manifold design where the output goes out the middle and input goes in the sides. Fills up conveyors twice as fast and all the output goes out one conveyor so less space used for merging them if thats what you need to do. Definitely you will need mk3-5 belts though for machines with higher outputs. Btw no idea if reverse manifold is the right way to say it but whatever. I use them for my factory in the game all the time now

Hey I just bought the game and started playing last week, so I'm a bit of a noob still. I only recently finished tier 2 and I'm getting ready to enter tier 3 and 4 and the madness they bring with steel and trucks and whatnot. Your videos, and those of the other wonderful people that make tutorials and tips for this amazing game, have been endlessly helpful so thank you very much 😄 I have a couple of questions, and it would be awesome if I could get some answers from someone who knows what they're doing. 1: What's better? To process the materials (ores -> ingots for example) where I mine them, or have a central place for that? Right now I have a central place near my main factory, but it's quickly becoming a nightmare to manage them. 2: Are manifolds better than load bearing? Right now I'm doing load bearing, but my factory is quickly turning into a mess of unmanageable spaghetti. But I don't have access to high tier belts, only mk2, so I'm afraid manifolds would starve some of my machines. Thank you for making these videos once again, you're awesome and I'm definitely subbing.
@TotalXclipse
@TotalXclipse 3 роки тому
Hey! I'm so glad you're finding the guides helpful, there are a few really helpful content creators for satisfactory :) to answer your first question I recommend taking the smallest items on the buses so don't smelt copper ingots at source and then turn them into wire there only to send them on, same with screws. Do that at the factory. Iron and copper can be taken to the factory as it's 1 ore to 1 ingot, but things like caterium that requires 3 ore to 1 ingot if you're transporting over longer distances I'd smelt at the source. As for manifolds vs load balancers they're as good as each other you just have to give the system time to warm up (the manifold has to be fully saturated) but providing you have the correct ratio of machines to ingredients, it's should be as efficient as a load balancer
@thatexoguy6721
@thatexoguy6721 3 роки тому
@@TotalXclipse Thank you for taking the time to answer 😊 I just discovered caterium yesterday, so I didn't smelt any yet to see the ore to ingots ratio. But yes, if it's 3 ores for 1 ingot it's definitely worth smelting where I mine it. And about manifolds, they seem like load balancers but without the hassle and with a warmup time. I can definitely live with a warmup time, so I'll do them from now on.
@MetalPirate
@MetalPirate 3 роки тому
Really cool concept. I'm new to this type of game, I put about 4 hours into it so far, at Tier 2. What do you typically do for parts you need for building that are also downstream? Do you typically build a line and dump them into containers just to have parts on hand, then make new lines to create higher tier items? My other question, that is slightly related, is do you typically prefer to keep all production of a specific item localized, such as keeping all your screw production in one area, or have screw production at each area where they're required?
@TotalXclipse
@TotalXclipse 3 роки тому
For item localisation it depends entirely on items, for example I'd never bulk produce screws unless they're in the factory they need to be used as transporting x number of screws at lower tiers is impossible due to conveyor throughput, but more advanced items, yes. I'm working on a build currently, that always returns items to a storage after manufacturing before heading to a new factory, I find it useful for keeping things organised and that way I have some in storage and a load heading to where they need to be :)

This is super helpful! I just bought the game, and trying to figure everything out is a little overwhelming lol. So, using a manifold I assume that you would need a separate manifold for each raw material?? Or could you use smart sorters and just have everything dump down a single line and auto sort?
@michaeljespersen6151
@michaeljespersen6151 3 роки тому
Never, ever mix items and ressources on belts, it's super messy and leads to clogs that will affect your entire system. Imagine you feed a belt with 4 different items for 4 different types of production, and just one of those stops (maybe because the container it feeds into fills up), now you've shut down all 4 productions, instead of just the 1.

So generally spoken the Overflow Method and Load Balancing Method both eventually will be at 100% efficency. But the Overflow Method will have something you could consider a "boot time", as the efficency is gradually increasing after start up until 100% is reached. If this bothers you but you don't want to waste as much space as with proper load-balancing use the following compromise. In this example we want to split into 25% each. In the given setup it first splits into 2x 50%. The first 50% go into the first machine, the other 50% will be split half to the second machine. (Effectively 25% of main input) and machine Number 3 gets 12,5% and Number 4 12,5%. First Machine is Overflow (50% of total) Second Machine is Correct (25% of total) Third Machine is Underflow (12,5% of total) Fourth Machine is Underflow (12,5% of total) Now go to 7:45 in the Video. Split the first machine into 3! The 3rd Output going back on to the belt via a merger right after the splitter. Therefore the Setup would be S.M.S.M.S.M.S (S = Splitter, M = Merger) with a curved belt going from each Splitter to the following Merger, reconnecting to the belt. Result: First Machine is Overflow (33,33%) Second Machine is Underflow (22,22%) Third Machine is Underflow (14,82%) Fourth Machine is Overflow ( 29,63%) 2x Overflow and one close by correct is definetly better and therefore will reduce boot time. If you are further interested, read my Answer to this comment. If not, just split in 50% after the first two.
@user-ki8ye1nc8p
@user-ki8ye1nc8p 4 роки тому
As a split in 25% bits is pretty easy anyways and I'm simply too lazy to calculate any more complex scenarios I just wanna point out something. In the 1/3 splits you have Overflows at the beginning and the End. It is thereby kind of like feeding the System from both ends. (First 33,33% and last one 29,63%) even tho this effect decreases over the total amount of machines used. If you want to go one Step further i would recommend the following setup: First Splitter in thirds Second Splitter in thirds Third Splitter in HALF. This results in: First Machine 33,33% (66,66% sent on) Second Machine 22,22% (44,44% sent on) Third Machine 22,22% (22,22% sent on) Fourth Machine 22,22% Think about it that way (when transfering to what ever split you are trying to attempt without giving away significant amounts of space): Overflow on first machine will always be. Overflow on last machine is preventable.
@TotalXclipse
@TotalXclipse 4 роки тому
Tim a really interesting idea - thanks for sharing, however this would only work on the basic single line set up correct? Although I suppose you could place a splitter before and with the use of elevators take 2/3rds of the items off the first splitter and merge them back either on the next part of the line or the one after that. It’s something I’d like to try out!
@user-ki8ye1nc8p
@user-ki8ye1nc8p 4 роки тому
@@TotalXclipse TotalXclipse Yeah i was thinking about a basic single line setup specifically. To be honest, I haven't played the Game yet as I'm stuck on the other side of the World due to Covid, so I don't know what kind of splits / amount of machines are common in an actual setup. I primarily wanted to point out that you can use the 3rd Output of the Splitters in order to spread the items more evenly, reducing the "Boot Time". Thereby you keep the spacial advantages of the Overflow Method, whilst taking some of the benefit of load balancing. Your idea sounds great, but in order to make it a viable option you should keep in mind how much space 'proper' load balancing would cost and if its worth using the compromised version or not. Maybe we will find something like decision rules when and where to split, but especially with longer setups which have more machines it sounds like a good idea to split of 2/3 right away and refeed from the top a little later. Edit: You would need to use a splitter infront of the first splitter. Splitters have 3 outputs, one going to the machine and 2 beeing the 2/3 you want to refeed later leaves you with no output continuing the main feeding belt. Thats why I originally made the commenct of keeping the spacial requirements in mint. I was thinking about some way of displaying the actual benefit/increase in efficency during boot time and feel like I'm lacking the practical experience of the game regarding this. You could go thru it assuming you are having a 120/min feeding belt going into 4 machines each using 30 items per minute. Therefore production time would be 2 seconds/item for each machine. Then you can go and either measure or calculate the item input rate. (For each machine) When the first machine is on overflow, it's at 100% all the time. But the machines storage has to fill up first before the Situation changes. After that you are going to have a new Situation. The first machine takes 30 items/minute off the 120/minute feeding belt, leaving it as a 90/minute for the other 3 machines. Therefore we need to recalculate the split rates for this new situation until machine 2 is full and working at 100% efficency. Having done this for each stage and having calculated / experimented the total booting time you could compare the only 50% split and the 1/3 split method by their total booting time and overall efficency over time and therefore show exactly how much of a difference it makes. (Using a graph for this would make sense) I don't want to write a book about it right now, but as soon as I'm back to my gaming PC i'll probaply make a spreadsheet and some measurements providing an exact comparison.

What I want to see, mainly because I struggle with it, is routing resources. I tend to separate my "tier 1" factories and then pump their produce to a main base. So I usually have quite a bit of Iron Plates/Rods/Screws, Copper Sheets/Wire/Cable, and Steel Beams/Pipes heading to a building. Using a nice circular main bus to distribute them to Assembler lines is not a huge deal, but then pushing them and the assembly produce to Manufacturers is where I run into trouble and all of my well organized factories and lines start to fall into disarray.
@TotalXclipse

That's a big video to undertake! - Sounds like it could be a big headache... and fun so sure! I'll get round to it, but I may have to wait to have wifi as that'll be a long one and I'm not sure my data will handle it! I'd recommend using a storage system to pool Items from one factory to your main factory and from there maybe use load balancers to get the number of items required per minute in order to run more complex manufacture lines at 100% clock :)

The one thing I like to do with a manifold setup is put a merger at the start and a smart splitter at the end and create and overflow loop back to the beginning merger. To dump the extra back into the mainline in. Not sure if it makes a difference, but it feels like it keeps the last machines on the lines fill equally

This was very helpful. I’m a “new” player to the game, i recently finished a play through of the game... My definition of “finished” is being able to manufacture anything and everything, having nuclear power, and having all M.A.M research completed(I’m working on finishing up on unlocking all of the “AWSOME Shop” blueprints tho). As of now, my mains save file has approximately 70 Hours on it, and I made the big mistake of barely using foundations. So my bace is a mess and efficiency is not the best. So I plan on just letting my factory run while I’m AFK so I can stock up on steel and heavy modular frames and basically ship my entire factory’s bace tear products by train to the most north east area of the map and build a visually pleasing and efficient mega-factory. Any tips for this would be greatly appreciated, I haven’t watched a single tutorial up until this point so I’m a self taught player.

Couldn' do 8 equal lines in the limited space of 1 foundation canal. Playing my first playthrough. I guess the shown setup in your coal power plant design is for later progress? Hey! You're right to a certain extent, at first the last constructors wont receive the items they need, however once the first constructors line is fully saturated, the extra items will over flow to the next splitter, and this will eventually feed to the last constructors. So long as the line is running at the correct ratios to constructors then eventually the factory will run at 100% :)

How do you decide when to scale up production? Do you just feed manifold systems any amount of resources you like till they eventually get saturated then add some extra? @TotalXclipse

I go by conveyor speed or end item production requirements, if I'm running MK2 conveyors I know I can have 120 items on a single manifold or 240 on a hybrid (splitting the first splitter between the start of the line and the end of the line) so on a single manifold I could say run 8 constructors creativing rods (15pm) or on a hybrid or I guess an inverted manifold is probably a better name I could run 16 constructors. If however I have an item that needs 150 rods to be built. Then I know my manifold needs a total of 10 constructors and I'll need to find a way to fit 150 iron ingots along that bus
@MonkEsquire
@MonkEsquire 3 роки тому
@@TotalXclipse Hmm I think I get what you're saying. So by your example you want 120 rods a minute to come out, you just put the right amount of ingots on the input and as long as you have enough constructors it sort of just works itself out in the end and eventually you get the output you want? No matter if the first constructor gets 100% efficiency and the last constructor only gets 10% it eventually works out. Do you then have to manifold ore into ingots? Or do you generally load balance the smelting process that and only manifold the constructor phase and beyond?
@TotalXclipse

@@MonkEsquire There is a "warm up period" but once the belt is saturated - and it will if you fill the conveyor with the same amount of input resources as your constructors require. All will eventually run at 100% efficiency. You can manifold for any instance that you might use a load balance :)

@@TotalXclipse Ah so it'll always saturate if you input the right amount? That makes sense. But how do you know how many constructors you need for a given manifold? In your example with 8 constructors and 120 items how do you work out the required amount of constructors?
