Thank you for covering these bikes, i understand that 3k bikes will be much better but not everyone has the budget to go there and also not everyone is out to do massive drops and jumps. I personally own a trek but my wife has a rockrider 530s with air suspension and its a great bike to do some easy trails and rocky bits. Great to see some coverage for different economies/countries.

A fully stocked Decathlon, what is this sorcery? Jokes aside, places like Decathlon are very effective at making the sport more accessible by removing one of the biggest barriers - cost. Their bikes are solid and give excellent value for money.

this year i bought my first "good" mountain bike - 2018 specialized rockhopper. i bought it used and i have to say - it was a real bargain. it costed a bit more than 700 €. The owner upgraded it, so it now has sram nx eagle shifting system, crang brothers pedals, lizard skins grips, 12 gears etc. i just love it. it's perfect for beginners with some experiences. it's also super light. recommend it!

My first bike was a Norco Storm a couple years ago, paid around $1000 AUD. It was an amazing entry to the mountain bike scene. I did a 1x conversion myself on it. Already had an air fork and hydraulic disk brakes which I paired with some bigger rotors. I'v since had a slight upgrade to a 2021 Norco Fluid full squish trail bike and love that thing

Well reading the comments so far for some this has really brought out the snobbery in the mountain bike community! How many of those looking down their noses have actually owned a Rockrider? Yes this is a PP vid but it’s also about making the sport accessible to all and on even the lowest budget. Rockrider bikes do what they say on the box. My son’s both have them. One has a HT and the other a FS, both originally in the £300 - £400 bracket. Now over 6 years old they have been bomb proof. Thrashed round woods, trail centres, 45 mile rides and covered in mud, nothing has ever gone wrong with them; even the cheaper components. Although they’ve now upgraded to more premium bikes they’ve kept the Rockriders for every day riding and still nothing has broken. We all have to start somewhere! Really well presented Neil! 👍

👏👏 well said mate! Myself was reading the comments and it can make you think you need a higher end bike! I started hitting trails about a year ago. At first I was looking at the budget bikes then through comments and videos I convince myself I needed to save a crazy amount of money to get started then I thought to myself I’m sort of new to this and I’m going to crash and brake a lot of expensive components then I went with a rockrider great bike and solid! Saving for Nukeproof now cos I’m loving it and crashing less 😅 but will always love my first mtb rockrider !

Seeing Neil on a 299£ V brake decathlon hahaha ;) joke aside I had decathlon s cheapest mtb as my first bike it was 250 pound and I was like OMG THIS IS SO EXPENSIVE but I used it for a year in all of wales red/black routes it managed... nothing broke, but after a year I spent 1200£ to buy a vitus sentier, decathlon definately good for a very very beginner MTB and dont spend more than 300£ because you are going to overgrow that one and need the money you saved for a proper one, dont even try to spend money to upgrade that bike just use it until it breaks it lasted well for a year until headset needs chaging,

On a tight budget clipless pedals are the last thing I'd spend money on, even for XC riding! I'd get some mid-range flats for £40 rather than spend £100 on bad clipless pedals and shoes.I'd also stick to hardtails as a beginner, no matter your budget, you'll get a better bike for your money and learn better technique/handling skills at the same time.

Thanks Neil, as always helpful and fair - even if it was sponsored by a large retail shop It’s always a minefield when choosing a mtb.......I have got back into it so have been using my 2008 felt which cost about £700 at the time, now thinking of upgrading as there are a few things I’d like (dropper post, converting to 1x11 from 3x9) and some parts will soon need replacing (such as rear mech, cassette and front cassette along with forks) if I replace these which I’m struggling to find like for like replacements and the cost to replace these things soon starts adding up to the point where a new bike suddenly becomes a more economic reason. Just wish there was a place you can hire out the different types of riding frames - I don’t fancy making a choice only for it not to work for me...........

I know not everyone wants to spend thousands of dollars on their first bike, but these cheap bikes are full of low quality components that at best you'll want to upgrade anyway and at worst can be unreliable and dangerous. Plus, spending money on upgrades defeats the purpose of having a cheap bike anyway and generates more waste as you throw out the old components. The used bike market is kinda rough right now but it's really your best bet for getting decent components and frame at a good price while also minimizing waste. Especially if you're an entry level rider, your own skills are going to hold you back more than 5 year old geometry, so don't let the marketing people at bike manufacturers (and sponsoring UKposts channels) convince you that we're all racing the pro circuit and need the latest and greatest. Happy trails!

You don't know about Rockrider :D because this makes no sense. Do you think an AdventX is low quality? wrong! ok the shimano altus is not the best but there is a lot of bikes like the ST540 V2 with an AdventX and they're not bad even if they're cheap. They have a lot of components by it's own and they're not bad and also don't think mountain biking is all about shredding the black/double balck diamond trails because these are XC bikes except the AM ones and you can upgrade them real good.

Great all-round intro video, I’d say, and honest for something that includes a paid promotion. Of course, loads of people love to look down their noses at Decathlon/Rockrider as not cool or ‘not real’ mountain bikes, blah, blah, but looking at the components versus price, especially as you go a bit further up the Rockrider range, the bang for the buck seems very impressive. If I had my choice I’d have a Yeti or an Orbea, maybe, but as I’m skint I’m looking carefully at the Decathlon range for a new bike. Plus, for people living outside the UK, and where there might not be as much choice or reliable local bike shops, it seems like a very good option.

@@captaincommodore8901 it's not the brakes, I had no issues on XC 500 with level T and I'm 2m tall 100kgs. You need to bed them in properly. Same on AM 100 S, level T but 4 piston, people complain but the brakes need bedding in, no issues riding red single tracks on that

@@wojciechlechowicz9538 yeah I agree, I forgot to bed in my Level T brakes on my XC100S, so I removed them and legit sanded them real good and now feels better, not the best but feels better and I believe it would be really good when I change my brake pads and bed them in correctly

What type.of bike do you need would be a good beginner vid, also.in conjunction with GCN.... so many buy a mtb or FS and only ride on road, or buy a hybrid and think they can hit the trails on it. Most shops imo sell people what they think the person wants to keep them sweet and make sure they buy, rather than advise them what they NEED and risk loosing a sale... understandable as they are a business... but not helpful for newbie riders
@rupedog

Lightness/weight is a much mis-used sales or decision factor tbh. In cheaper bikes, light usually means weak/not robust

Question in terms of derailleur choice: If im building my first enduro bike (brand new ns snabb from the 15-6’ ish design with 142x12 axle) and am going for an 1x11 system, wich one of those would be recommended? I allready got an xt m765 crankset, with a 34t nw ring that has 1mm offset so far. For the correct chainline should it be more? The snabb has a 73mm bb shell, and my rear casette has to be hg compatible and the provisioned range is 11-46 on the back end. If anybody could help me out with derailleur choice that would be nice. Currently im debating myself between m7000(not in stock at most places anymore, m8000got a handful in stock at places and 5100 which i easily could buy. Pros cons against the 5100 vs the other two?

Never one to complain about advertising / sponsor videos, that’s how channels like this are able to provide content for free after all, although in this case I can’t help but feel it’s disingenuous to suggest that it would be wise to spend your money on something 3 by with V brakes versus spending the same on a decent couple year old hard tail with proper brakes & a half decent drivetrain I can’t imagine GMBN actually suggesting you go out and spend your money on a bike with V brakes because it has ‘double walled wheels!’ from decathalon if it weren’t for the sponsorship versus finding something much more suitable for the trails on the same budget from the used market

No it's not. Ridden one from a colleague, it sucked. I would pick a 2nd hand respected brand 26er over that thing, any day of the week. Which isn't a bad choice by the way when you are just starting out.

@@em8452 can you tell me why it's bad? Which part sucks? Drivetrain or something else?(fork for example)
@em8452
@em8452 2 роки тому
For the most part it is very heavy and that takes the fun out of the ride with the weird geometry it has. Also it is not very upgradable. It has qr hubs, a square tapered bottom bracket and a straight steerer tube. If, and I dont know if its even possible, you want to upgrade to a good fork which are almost all tapered these days you will need a external cup headset which makes the weird long steerer tube even longer. Im sure the microshift stuff isnt all that bad, didnt tried it in the mud though. Im not saying you wont have any fun on it if you buy it. I just think it is a better idea if you can get a 2nd hand 26er tot start on with proper parts, for less, and save up for a proper 29er hardtail that you can upgrade in time.
@balazsjancso2744
@balazsjancso2744 2 роки тому
@@em8452 thanks for the information! The hubs are ok what you said but the fork is quite easy answer because we have a lot of straight XC fork even fox 32 have a straight version and the microshift is not that bad it's like shimano or sram because this is it's competitor in the market. I guess it is not bad for some people but it's not for you as i see. Thanks again for the good information :)
