The easiest and most effective turkey call for beginners is the box call yelp. New turkey hunters can learn how to yelp in minutes and then add the next two foundational calls, the purr and the cluck. Learning how to call turkeys can be very easy but it is a skill that takes a lifetime to master. Here I teach the simplest way to start calling turkeys for first few hunts and give you the basics of turkey calling strategy and tactics. This is a box call quick start guide for turkey calling 101.

There are many good types of calls like pot calls, slate calls, glass calls, mouth calls, push pull calls, and more but the box call has the best combination of ease, volume, and versatility for people who are new to spring turkey hunting and trying to take their first gobbler. #turkeyhunting There are lots of good turkey call brands like Quaker Boy, Primos, ESH, Strut Commander, Woodhaven, Flextone, and many more.

I love a box call. Its so simple but so very effective. Good way to get your calling down is just sit at hime and practice practice practice. I was a little rusty today since i havent picked up a call for a year. But i had 5 birds come in. They where hened up so they wouldn't come all the way in but i still saw a bunch of birds today. Hunting em again tomorrow.

Can I use my factory full choke for turkey hunting and will it work or do I have to buy one
@travispavel
@travispavel Рік тому
You should go pattern your gun before you decide. If the factory full puts out a good pattern up to around 30-40 yds then there’s no need to buy a turkey choke.
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide Рік тому
The factory full will do a fine job st regular ranges with good turkey ammo like winchester long beard xr. A turkey choke will extend your range a bit with a tigher pattern. But the stock full is usually fine out as far as 40 yards. Just make sure you pattern test it

I see a ton of the videos with "tips" or instructions on how to use a call or make the sound. What beginners need is 1: WHAT are all the different sounds. Not the equipment or methods to make those sounds. Just what sounds to turkeys make and what do they mean? 3: WHEN to make different sounds. Only after those things are understood does it become worthwhile to know 3: HOW to make the sounds. If anyone can recommend good videos for what sound and when, that would be great!
@TheNewHuntersGuide

That would be why I made the sounds on camera instead of just illustrating call mechanics.

Try searching turkey language, or WHEN to call or HOW to call to turkeys. You're going to find eventually in the end, less is more. Letting yourself imagine its some complicated scientific biology experiment is the worst thing you can do and will frustrate you faster than anything. Time in the field and lots of patience is best.

About the mouth call: Learning to do the soft, contented sounds when a gobbler is within line of sight hands-free is a huge deal for a lot of people. Myself included. There's nothing more soul crushing than not being able to seal the deal in the last 25yds you need out of them because box calling at that distance will more thab likely freak them out if they're already skittish. That being said, is it "easy" to learn to do? Not really. And box calling may be way easier to learn, but we all know "that guy" who thinks working a box automatically produces turkey sounds (who also happens to be the guy who comes home empty handed more than the rest). In the end you do have to practice box, slate, and diaphragm calls if you have them. Cantor and rhythm are bigger deals to turkeys thab pitch and tone (in my opinion) and they know what "normal" pacing sounds like. Anyone who commutes, meal preps, cooks, goes for walks, hikes, canoes, fishes, or even knits has zero argument for why they can't listen to recordings of turkeys and/or practice diaphragm calling. Literally learned how to do it effectively in less than a week doing that. I can be louder than a box call, softer than slate, and don't need to fumble with my hands when crunch time rolls around with a diaphragm. That's why they're popular. That being said, I still carry a box, slate, and diaphragm on me regardless. And I do agree: If you can only have one thing to use, are really new to it, don't know what you're doing, and have zero willpower or discipline to practice your odds are way higher picking up a box call than anything else. I would also put good money down that box calls have yielded more successful hunts than any other individual calling tool. I just think in the modern world there's little to no excuse for not finding any possible time to kearn to work a mouth call. On the other side of that coin: There's absolutely no way I'd hand a guy a mouth call, march him into the woods, and say, "Go get 'em, Tiger!" and walk off. I've seen that end well for guys on a box call, though. Boxes don't take long to figure out how to use effectively at all.

A box call is not the easiest call to learn. A scratch or pot call is a lot easier and can create a lot more calls than a box. I seriously hope folks do not listen to you. A push pull is easier than all of em. You give some bad advice hombre.
@TheNewHuntersGuide
@TheNewHuntersGuide Рік тому
I do absolutely disagree. It is much easier to learn the basics and make reasonable turkey sounds faster on a box call. Much more technique is needed to make the same sounds on a pot call. Most people that have been hunting for a long time completely take for granted their ability to use a striker with great simplicity. I have taught new callers and 100% of the time they can do better faster on a box call. A push pull call is indeed easier to use for a yelp, but like I say in the video the box call is more versatile to make clucks and purrs as well and it provides more volume. The slight trade off is worth it in my opinion to start with a box call vs. a push pull. It takes more skills to cluck and purr on a push pull. Again, experienced hunters totally take it for granted that they know what a cluck and purr sound like, something that is vital to make the sounds right on a push pull. If you follow my simple steps in this video you can make reasonable yelps, clicks, and purrs with a box call with no other skills or knowledge of turkey sounds. The greatest strength of the box call is you can make the calls without knowing much about what they are supposed to sound like. The call does the work if you follow these simple steps. A slate, mouth and push pull (for clucks and purrs) require you to know the sounds and adjust your technique to get them, and that is knowledge new hunters just don't have yet.
@SCNative_76
@SCNative_76 Рік тому
@@TheNewHuntersGuide if you can hold a pencil you can run a pot call. It’s one of the easiest calls to master as well. I started turkey hunting in the early 80s when you actually used a pot. A push pull and a crow call is your best bet starting out. You’ll kill more turkeys with soft yelps and purrs than anything. Which is hard to achieve with a box call. Additionally using a box call and staying on your gun requires a lot of movement. A push pull requires the movement of your finger and can be attached to your gun or leg…. A box call not so much.
