@@huskobyte PSU: Converts outlet power into the different cables needed for your parts GPU: Handles graphics calculations. Some CPUs have one built in (Integrated Graphics). Integrated graphics will work great for desk work, but won't be able to run many modern games at decent settings. MOBO: Everything plugs into this RAM: Stores temporary data used to run programs, nothing is saved here permanently. If you plan on gaming you probably need at least 8 GB. CPU: "Brain" of your PC. Aw man this helped a TON. I didn’t even know where to begin when it came to knowing what goes with what, but this taught me exactly what I need to know to narrow things down based on my pre-existing case. For anyone confused, just draw up the octagon he described. It also helps to at least know what each part does and how it goes together...

Another tip is to make sure the CPU you pick will be operating at an equal or greater data flow in comparison to the video card so that you prevent bottlenecking your system. For more details search for PC bottlenecking articles.

Don't forget to pay attention to the height of 2.5" drives, as not all 2.5" drives are the same height (SSDs are usually 7mm, hard drives are typically 9.5mm). Some cases (Mini ITX cases in particular) will have mounting locations that are only 7mm high, preventing the mounting of spinning platter-type hard drives.

Hah yeah I just ordered parts 2 days ago and was thinking the same thing. I think I'll be alright but guess I'll see. Didn't check between front panel & mobo but panel is pretty standard (few USBs, mic, audio) so should be fine. I had considered RAM/cooler clearance but didn't know how to check that. Are DIMM slots always the same distance from CPU slot? If I'm only using 2/4 RAM slots, they will be the ones further away right (like slot 4 is closest to CPU and I use slots 1 & 3)?

Still working out a small issue with whine coming from CPU area (mobo I think) and through headphones, but that's not due to incompatibility. It's awesome otherwise.

A few minor things you forgot to mention: 1. PCIe is both backwards and forwards compatible. You can shove a PCIe 3.0 GPU in a PCIe gen 1.0 slot and it will theoretically work and vice versa. 2. PCIe cards can also be placed into slots that are not the same width. You can shove a PCIe x16 graphics card into an 8x, 4x or 1x slot. You can also shove a PCIe x1 card (like a SATA or sound card) into a 1x, 4x, 8x, or 16x slot and it will function, it will just work at the lowest common denominator of available speed. Although if you are going to shove a PCIe x16 card into an 8x slot or under, you will have to cut the slot so the extra PCIe connectors can overhang the slot. 3. you can actually plug a 20-pin ATX PSU connector into a 24-Pin ATX header in a motherboard and it will work. The same goes with the CPU power connector. You can plug a 4-pin EPS CPU power connector from the PSU into a motherboard with an 8-pin EPS CPU power connector and it will work fine. 4. If the PSU of choice has no SATA/molex connectors, adapters and SATA/molex splitters can be very cheaply obtained on ebay. 5. If you are going to go SLI or crossfire, make sure on the Nvidia side each GPU will be able to receive at least 8 PCIe lanes and on the AMD GPU side at least 4 PCIe lanes for crossfire/SLI operation. I don't know how many new PC builders will run into these issues as they are pretty minor, but you did forget to mention them.

+Dylan 873 I think he wanted to say that you should not put a GPU in a PCI gen2, regardless of the backwards compatibility
@circletech7745
@circletech7745 8 років тому
But why not? I've been able to get used GTX 570s on ebay for 50 bucks that will crush a $100 GTX 750 ti for significantly less cost and GTX 570s are PCIe gen2. A Novice PC builder may not buy a used GPU because he may think it will not work even if it really does.

+Dylan 873 At least the first 3 i dont think brand new pc builders need to know because they should not be trying to do those kind of things, they are just handy. 4 and 5 i agree should have been said or at least 4

I'm new to your channel so I've been binge watching your videos. In a few weeks I will be building my very first PC from parts, before that I've always have prebuilts. I'm really looking to dig deeper into the whole videoediting thing (well, been making videos for youtube since 2006-ish). My point being, I've found lots of tips and help for my future pc-building endeavour, so thank you for those. PS. Don't worry, I won't be doing it along, I got an experinced PC-builder to guide me along, step by step. Much love all the way from Finland!

100% beginner here and I apologize but I was confused by the video. I got that: cpu = processor Gpu = graphics card Psu = power supply Memory = RAM Storage = SSD, Hard drives Case = case MOBO = motherboard What do the names 2060 ti,ddr4, PCIe, h110 or z170 mobo, "ssd for your OS. I5"and mean? I read comments about suggested parts and I am 100% confused on what they mean. I'd like to 1)understand the terms or model names 2)Have a pc that runs games at 60 or over fps preferably Minecraft and ROBLOX with a 500$ budget
@zenniz1992
@zenniz1992 7 років тому
DDR4 is the generation of the ram. PCIe is the connection interface between the motherboard and other component that uses PCIe slot like graphic card, network card, sound card,etc. H110 and Z170 is the model name of the intel's latest motherboard. OS is operating system like window 8, 7, 10, etc. It is better to install OS into SSD because SSD has much faster loading speed as compared to HDD (hard disc driver or hard drives)

When buying a gpu pay attention to the amount of video memory, most cards come in 2gb mine is 4gb I would recommend a 6gb for serious gaming and also if you use mods because it uses a ton of video memory. For CPU get a processor that has hyper threading as well. Memory you could get away with 8gb I'd recommend 16+ whatever you do don't buy a pre built, you can save yourself a ton of money building one yourself. Be careful about each particular step you need to do to put together a pc it's never good to just throw parts together and hope it works, then you have to restart because you don't know where you screwed up. I would recommend specific parts but my gpu alone costed more than 500 so I'm not the right guy for that.

Clinging to Trump or Obama is clinging to a boat anchor. The establishment Dem-Publican party have never helped your life (unless you enjoy crumbs or are Donor Class and want to learn how to build PCs instead of hiring an expert) and don't plan on it in the future. So none of us here should believe we are on one side or another of the political fight ('they' love it when we do). We all want the same stuff with minor, manageable differences. It is 3rd party time, or enjoy swimming with an anchor.

I love this video, I keep coming back to it. Though what this comprehensive video didn't consider, perhaps I've missed the details you've mentioned it in the 20+ times I've watched it, is to consider the IO on your motherboard, specifically video output, if you wanted to opt for a gpuless set up during the era we may not speak of, but how were you to know. My PC had brilliance, but was locked in, and couldn't show it to the world. Tragic lol.

+Bitwit (Sorry I ended up writing so much hope this does not cause needless confusion and manages to help people and educate them on system compatibility) GPU has a specified optimal system RAM which is usually twice that of the VRAM so if you have an R9 390x with 8 GB of VRAM you should get 16 GB of System RAM again this is optimal not a requirement. The GPU pulls from the system RAM to fill its VRAM buffer and if the system RAM is less it will not be able to effectively fill its VRAM as optimally for it would need to then pull from the virtual system RAM that is on the HDD, HHD, or SSD. (If I am wrong may someone please correct me in a reply but I am almost certain this is the case with VRAM and System RAM usage) Also not that the CPU and RAM should also have a line for the CPU has a RAM memory controller that is only supported by the manufacturer (AMD or Intel) to run at a certain frequency or specified number of memory channels. The AMD A10 7850K APU has a dual channel memory controller that is supported by 2133 mhz DDR3 memory so it would be optimal to get 2 DIMMs of memory that is rated for that frequency and enough to be utilized for maximum bandwidth (one in each channel so 2 DIMMs in this case) You could also place a line between CPU cooler and GPU for if you get a blower style GPU vs open air cooler on your GPU then it will affect how your CPU is cooled by dumping excess heat into the case and resulting in affected temps on your CPU An AMD R9 290 Powercolor PCS+ cooler card will dump a large sum of heat into your case which can cause your CPU to increase in heat by 1C - 15C depending on your cooling solution while a reference AMD R9 290 will usually have zero affect on your CPU's temperature. (This will make your "octagon method" complete in my own opinion)

Make sure your GPU outputs the correct types of signals to send to your Monitor, and if you have a 144hz monitor, you have to separately purchase a display-port cable of a DVI-D cable to be able to send 60+ FPS to your monitor. HDMI will not work most of the time. :)
