In this talk from Mindvalley Live 2019 in Los Angeles, Jim Kwik the author of Mindvalley's Superbrain and learning expert gives his talk on how we can actually learn faster by taking the information we read in faster and more effectively.
Want to learn more about how to enhance your learning? Tune into Jim Kwik's FREE masterclass hereπŸ‘‰ go.mindvalley.com/hWAzfM-6
The average person reads at a rate of about 225 words-per-minute (wpm). Jim Kwik, on the other hand, can read at rate of 1,300 wpm… Plus, he remembers and retains everything he reads. Now that’s speed reading.
Here’s the thing, though, Jim Kwik wasn’t always so kwik. In fact, he suffered a head trauma when he was 5 years old that slowed down his ability to learn (or so he thought). He fell far behind in school due to this, and struggled to keep up with the others kids. His seemingly incessant slow learning was almost the cause of his undoing.
It wasn’t until he was in college that he decided to give his learning difficulty a bit more attention. So, he thought a lot about learning - these thoughts then led him to delve into the concept of meta-learning, or learning how to learn (something we are strangely not taught how to do in school). He then decided to focus his attention on simply learning how to learn- on how to make learning his superpower!
Now, his impressive intelligence is known worldwide. As well, he has set up many Schools for Superheroes, which specialize in helping people attain their natural-born superpowers (without needing to be bit by a spider). One of these superpowers, is speed reading.
Jim emphasizes the importance of speed reading by explaining that:
"The average person reads 200-250 words-per-minute and spends 3 to 4 hours of their work day reading. That’s more than one-third of their time on the job. If that person makes $60,000 a year, then at least $20,000 of that money is paying for them to read. But proper training can easily double the average person’s reading speed (up to 400-450 w.P.M.). That cuts 3 to 4 hours down to 1 to 2. That’s a savings of over an hour a day. If you do that for 365 days a year, that’s 9 different 40 hour work weeks saved. That’s real time productivity. Imagine what you could do with all that extra time."- Jim Kwik

Full notes: 04:20 Read when you're receptive because learning is state dependent. 05:51 Write down a line right down a page when taking notes. 05:57 Repetition is very important in learning. 06:35 You only get the benefit of learning _if you use it._ 06:54 _"Oh, I know that already."_ keeps you from mastery. 07:07 The masters get good at the basics and fundamentals. They're everything. 07:12 Write down what you *know* on the _left-hand side_ of the page. 07:18 Write down what you *don't know* on the _right-hand side_ of the page. 07:40 Left-hand side: Capturing | Right-hand side: Creating 07:54 The right-hand side is for the distraction and impressions of what you're trying to learn in order to learn. 08:09 Three questions to obsess about when learning: 09:14 1. How can I use this? 10:07 1a.How can I make this better? 10:19 Questions are the answers. 11:02 2. Why must I use this? 11:09 Biggest *lie* in the personal development industry: _Knowledge is power._ 11:32 None of the knowledge works. You need to do the work. 11:59 Success formula: Head, Heart, Hands. Think about things in your mind. Act with your hands. We do things emotionally (heart). 12:27 We're *biological,* _not logical._ 12:46 We *_need_* *inspiration* to use knowledge. 12:52 You may get inspired but you may not know what to do. 12:57 Information, Inspiration, Implementation, Integration. 13:54 Learning is _not frantic fast._ Learning is effortless when you have the strategies and the tools. 14:45 Reading is the exercise of the mind. 14:46 Confidence-Competence Loop: the more competence you have the more confidence you will have. The more you get confident, the more often you do it. 15:07 The Confidence-Competence Loop = Positive Momentum 16:07 You must start with reasons because *reasons reap results.* 16:26 Genius leaves clues. 16;29 e.g. Names you remember are names of people you have kind of intention/attraction/motivation. 17:16 Podcast about *How to Change Your Habits* 17:36 You create your habits then your habits create you. 17:45 The life of your dreams is hidden in your daily routines. 18:14 Discipline reduces decision fatigue. Decision fatigue is what takes away from quality reading. 18:50 _The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People_ by Stephen R. Covey 19:11 Habit: Put *First Thing's* _First_ 20:40 Your greatest teacher is your last mistake. 21:06 If failure's not an option then neither is success. 21:46 3. When will I use this? 21:54 The three questions: 1. How can I use this? 2. Why must I use this? 3. When will I use this? 22:03 Your *calendar* is your number one *productivity performance* *_tool._* 23:28 *Nice* people are not necessarily invested in you. *Kind* people will go out of their way and will tell you the truth. 24:25 Free people from concern. 24:28 If you buy into the opinions of others, you're gonna go broke. 24:43 Some people don't read because of how it will look to other people. 25:03 Sometimes, the *people who care about you* _the most_ are the ones that you give the power to *_hold_** you **_back._* 25:26 You can't change another person. 25:35 The best thing you could do instead is *be an example.* 25:48 You decide. 26:09 If you can't do it for yourself, you're not gonna be able to do it for anybody else. 26:31 If you're not gonna use what you learn, you're not better off functionally *in terms of results.* 27:21 Meta-learning is the science of learning how to learn. 27:48 Seventh Habit: Sharpen the Saw. 28:19 Choose and be selective of what to put in your mind. 28:31 We're drowning in information, but we're starving in practical wisdom and inspiration. 28:50 Slow readers (1) lack education. 29:28 We first learned to read when we were roughly six years old; it's time upgrade our reading skills. 29:33 Slow readers (2) lack focus. 30:49 Think of driving a racing car; you are in focus when you're driving that fast. 30:53 When you read faster, you have better focus; when you have better focus, you have better comprehension. 31:04 Slow readers (3) subvocalize. 31:27 If you subvocalize, you could read as much as you can speak. 36:17 To interrupt subvocalization, (1) stop moving your lips by chewing gum or biting your knuckles, 36:45 (2) listen to music, 36:57 (3) count. 37:25 (4) or give yourself a visual pacer. 38:49 To read more, keep a reading list in order to target.

I have got some good points from Jim , 1- To power your self , think whose counting on you , you want to make them praude . 2- Every body / thing is your teacher, every thing can teach you. 3- If failure is not an option, the neither is success. 4- Self love and self care is not selfish. 5- If knowledge is power , the learning / reading is the super power. 6- If you're going through difficult time, it's an exam, adventure or a chance , you can decide what the results will be , not the conditions will drive you. It's your decision. Thanks a lot Jim .

I've been watching everyday, for the last 8 months, different contents in order to improve my English and this conference is my top 3 for sure. Reading is known as the more powerful tool to improve a language according to so many teachers. This last video has triggered my curiosity to give a real try to invest quality time in reading, not only for my English but for all the positive things I can get from a good book. I wish my comment isn’t too boring, I’m practicing my writing at the same time. I wish you also to find out the inspiration you need to improve all aspects of your English. Have a good one !

If you do't use what you learn you are no better functionally (results-wise) than someone who cannot read. Wow. My grandmother could not read well but she was very observant, learned by doing, asking questions and observing. She applied what she learned to the max. She did her budgeting in her head and could manage her home, care for children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, cook and clean better than any of her educated offspring- and still have time to listen, counsel, encourage and help others. She was a phenomenal woman.

Hi, Mr. Kwik I am Soo happy to come across one of your lectures, I have not been to a lecture before so I equates it to Church, lol thank you, all my life I felt slow. My mother passed away when I was five years old and I shut down. I remember before her passing no one could turn me off, if you know what I mean but after her passing everything became a bler. When it came time to go to school my teacher allowed me to mourn with my head down on the desk. I didn't come out of that state of mind until I was in high school by that time I was known as the slow one, she's special, she's a crybaby, she's mad and so on. I feel like I'm in this world but I'm not of it. I'm 54yrs old and I am just starting to comprehend. Thanks Sir.

Wow, I never knew other people subvocalize, too and that this is the reason for my slow reading! During all my years at university I struggled reading the many assigned texts and articles because I was too slow at reading. I've always believed I was just a little dumb and that this was the reason why I needed to subvocalize in order to understand what I'm reading but apparently the opposite is the case! Thank you so much for this elightenment!! Even if it feels like it's come a few years too late I can still start to change this reading habit now (cause actually I love reading)!

OMGOSH!!!!! I Love Jim Kwik!!!! Mind Valley Thank you!! Jim Kwik Thank you. I have given so much to our world in various ways. I like Jim have found & created to extended so much healing to our world as well as give freedom. I am the original creator of the 3 C's. It was stolen from me & later stated a man from another country created it. That is false I did in 1999. I also created the pink grapefruit & cranberry Sobe drink. They were outted by me on live Social media as well as various social media by ,me. I created the 3 C's during my first clinical hours. I have been called by many & asked by many to heal many. All on my own with various gifts of Super hero gifts & other. I am in, I am in. Thank you. I have a professor for my surgical classes cramming our class with 4 chapters two times a week with two tests on all 4 chapters nonstop. Plus we have to do 4 summaries & all our homework is to be turned in tomorrow. Listening to Jim has brought me back as I felt crammed by various males, females, & those of destitute with behaviors in my last mission as well as helped & serviced others. One male tried his hardest to break me like no other. With this & the professor cramming all of us students we are not absorbing much obviously yet he is a military Vet. Awesomeness with you all!!! Thank you. I missed Jim Kwik because of class, lectures of long 4 chapters, plus homework & reading with cramming. I was drained like never before. Thank you you stirred me right. Huge Hugs
