The problem was that even if every Tiger destroyed 15 Shermans that wasn't really a win. The US could build more than 15 Shermans for every Tiger. Shermans were rolling off assembly lines in auto factories and Tigers were hand made. A lot of the Shermans simply had the crew killed. The shells would go straight through. They'd patch the holes and paint over the blood and send it back out.

Years ago I read an autobiography of a NZ tank crewman of his experiences in Italy. He recalled that his unit did not use AP or HE against Tigers but used smoke, preferably the US round rather than the British one. His preference for US smoke rounds was that the smoke produced was thicker and stayed at ground level longer than the British round His story was the smoke would get inside and choke the crew. Side effects were to point out the Tigers position to everyone and make it a bullet magnet.

Military History Visualized, the British obtained the OKH instruction “the Tiger can no longer prance around the Battlefield etc” June 1944 during Normandy. Is Guderian late to events? See David Fletcher book Tiger: The Tiger Tank a British View. 1986, page 201. A coup would be to get either of the two David’s to take you through the information detailed in the book, on the War time Analysis of Tiger on video. Fantastic book if you can find an original. David Render suggested in his book 'Tank Action' that when at close range with German heavy armour, the Sherman 75s in his unit would use HE ammo. With the idea that you could either disable the tracks, or damage periscopes/sights etc and force the tank to withdrawer. There was also 1 encounter, where a Sherman got off 10 rounds of AP at a Tiger at less than 100 yards. They all failed to penetrate, but the smoke from the shells around the tiger from the tracer propellant, made the Tiger crew believe the tank was on fire and they bailed. Leaving behind a perfectly working Tiger tank with 8th Armoured Brigade.

@@QueenTheCossackTongued No, it can't. David Render, Tank action has an example of Sherman doing just that, firing 10 or 12 AP shells at glacis of Tiger and no penetration. (as explained above) Mailed Fist, by John Foley has an example of a Churchill 75mm (same ammo as sherman) firing 3 shots at the front of a Tiger, and failing to penetrate. Don't get fooled by allied pentration tests, they were fired against allied armour plate, significantly softer than German face hardened armour. So penetration during those tests, doesn't translate exactly to real life performance in the field.

Something to note about the graph at 1:00, if the situation doesn't look too bad for the T-34, remember that German penetration criteria assumes the impact occurs at 30° side angle. Without it the T-34 could probably be destroyed from the front at over 1500m.

In regards to the tracks and copula(and similar weak points) I know the soviets kept the PTRS and PTRD in service till the end of the war, are there any records of confirmed hits on tigers using those weapons? That might explain the "striking frequency" with which the copula was hit/damaged.
@doktork3406

the PTRS and PTRD cannot penetrate the cupola those can damage it but not penetrate it the PTRS/D were good at penetrating Panther's 40mm side armor plates , flat on at close ranges the tiger's 50mm(pretty sure it's 50) rounded cupola cannot be pierced however , the vision spots( not a native english speaker, sorry) made of glass could be harmed

Hitting the cupola isn't really that hard dude, especially in a range under 500 meters. Yet I think it's not as effective as shooting other weak points of the Tiger. For me shooting the cupola only kills commander most of the times, if I'm lucky the turret crew is dead. But there are more effective possibilities like trapshooting the turret ring or shooting the gun mantlet. And lastly, War Thunders physics engine is good but not real life comparable so there will always be some kind of discrepancy, in one patch a T-34 will hit cupola and kill the whole turret, in another one, it will hardly do anything. wait ... am I arguing with a filthy World of Tanks casual who needs gold ammo to reliably pen Tiger in his T-34 85 and zooms across the battlefield with 60 km/h? ughhhh

Training and preparation are important. The crew has to be trained to work as a team. The sights for the main gun have to be where the round will hit. Fifty years ago I used a split image rangefinder and there was a trick to consistently be on target. You could turn the adjusting wheel until the images lined up but there was some play before you noticed the images separating. That could cause a miss. The trick we used was to range up from the lower end until the images lined up.

In one of my books regarding the Spitfire at war (wish I could find it again) there is an interesting anecdote. Late in the war somewhere in France a Spitfire pilot saw a German tank retreating at speed along a metalled road. Despite thinking it fairly futile he let it have the benefit of his 20mm and 303 load, then went home. Later advancing British troops encountered a burnt out German tank covered in French graffiti the main sentiment of which being "nice one R A F!". Subsequent investigation and examination seemed to indicate that some of the 20mm rounds had ricocheted off the road surface into the underbelly of the tank with its thinner armour. If correct, it seems luck can be as important as calibre.

@iatsd
@iatsd 5 років тому
Speaking (formerly) professionally, it *is* unrealistic. These days. In ww2? Perhaps, but only if you have a death wish. While he quoted sunshine commenting on the high rates of damage to cupolas that tells you nothing about the rate at which they were targeted because the cupola is more susceptible to damage. Fire 100 rounds at a target and get, say, 50 hits. Of those a random number hit the cupola ah be cause important damage. The r rest hit elsewhere and do nothing. Which hits are you going to note the most? I can guarantee it will be the damaging hits. Maybe they're aiming for the weak point. Maybe they aren't. You can't tell until you count all hits over time. Given the quality of Russian training in ww2 I doubt that telling them to aim for X small point (when it was such a small percentage shot) was a winning strategy. A winning strategy is telling them to hold fire until within damaging range, aim to hit, get as many gifts on target as fast as possible, and btw these are some weak points if you feel up to it.
@nottoday3817
@nottoday3817 5 років тому
@@iatsd Dude, can you stop treating the Russians in a Patton-style view? No my friend, they were no significantly less trained than any other 18 year old dude coming out of an American school and joining infantry. Tank commanders actually got more training than the germans as far as I remember. And for gunners: If there was something Russians were good at, that thing was artillery. They had some amazing artillery schools and weapons to go with them. So no, aiming for a weakspot is not out of the ordinary, And I should point out something else: HOW YOU ENGAGE. Like on those 'where to fire' leaflets delievered to the Red Army soldiers and Western Allies as well, you usually have the angle of firing as well. Commanders cupola is a point you can aim for if you were the 'bait' of the fire pocket [in the battle of Kursk, soviet anti-tank units developed a tactic, where they would be split into 2 or 3, one being placed in front of the direction the enemy is expected to arrive. They would be the bait, firing from a position as strong as possible. On the side of the position, you would have the other AT guns. Now, if the Tiger does not take the bait and still is out of the fire pocket(aka the side is not exposed) those could also aim for the cupola. ]

What he left out when he mentioned Otto Carius being nearly killed when his cupola was hit, was that on the early "Tigers" the hatch opened upward, making it a easy target, as well as a flag to the soviet gunners that hatch was open. They would fire HE at the raised hatch cover, and and the cover would cause the blast to deflect downward into the tank. The later tigers had had a different cupola design, and the hatch slid sideways rather than pivoting upwards.
