Power steering explained
Not every symbol that appears on your dashboard is a warning light. Some have to do with vehicle features (like lights and cruise control) or safety (like blind-spot monitoring and lane departure warnings) or mechanical issues (like low tire pressure and engine temperature warnings).
Save money with these DIY car maintenance tips
When it comes to dashboard lights, colors matter! Green or blue lights simply let you know that a system is on or operating. Orange/yellow warning lights generally signify that your vehicle needs to be serviced or repaired soon. These warnings are less urgent than if you have a red and/or flashing light.
A red light means that you should take action immediately! Some red dashboard lights are safety warnings (like a seat belt reminder) and others are mechanical (like the engine overheating). If a red mechanical light appears, pull over as soon as possible and figure out what’s going on. Your vehicle will likely stop working or become damaged if you continue to drive.
As you read through this list, here are two things to keep in mind:
1. Every car is different, so the symbols on your dashboard may vary slightly from the ones on our list. If in doubt, consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual!
2. Many of these dashboard lights will illuminate briefly when you turn on your vehicle and performs a system check. As long as the lights turn off within a few seconds, everything is operating normally.

How To Fix Power Steering Warning Light 1.Insert the key into the ignition. Your steering wheel is likely locked because there was a bit of force on the wheel as you turned the car off last. Unlocking it will require using the ignition key in the same way you would when starting the vehicle. Insert the key into the ignition and see if it will turn. If the key will turn and start the vehicle, the wheel will unlock with the ignition cylinder. 2.Turn the key gently. If the key and wheel both remain locked in place, you will need to apply pressure to the key in the direction you would usually turn it. Be careful not to apply the pressure too high up on the body of the key, as that may cause the key to twist or even break while inside the key hole. Instead, apply firm but gentle pressure until the ignition comes unlocked. If you do need to contact an automotive locksmith, it will be much more expensive to repair an ignition cylinder with a broken key inside. 3.Apply pressure to the steering wheel. The steering wheel is locked in place using a pin on one side. When locked, the wheel will not be able to move in either direction freely, but one side will not allow any movement whatsoever (the side with the locking pin). Determine which direction the wheel cannot move, then apply pressure in the other direction while turning the key with your other hand. It is the process of turning the key while applying pressure to the wheel simultaneously that will unlock the steering wheel. The wheel will only move slightly in the direction opposite the pin, but won't move at all in the wrong direction. 4.Do not shake or rock the wheel. You may be tempted to shake the wheel back and forth while attempting to unlock it, but doing so will actually decrease your chances of successfully unlocking the wheel. Instead, apply steady pressure in one direction on the wheel until it unlocks. Shaking the wheel back and forth could damage the locking pin and likely won't unlock the wheel. 5.Pull the key out slightly before turning it. If the key is beginning to wear out it may not be able to turn in the ignition. You may still be able to engage the pins needed to start the vehicle by inserting the key in all the way, then pulling it back out slightly. Try to pull the key back out 1/16 of an inch, or approximately the width of a nickel, then attempt to turn it again. If this works, the key is likely over worn. You should still replace the key as soon as you can before it stops working. 6.Turn the wheel and the key at once to unlock it. It may take a few tries, but if you apply pressure to the wheel in the right direction while simultaneously turning the key, it will unlock both, allowing the wheel to move freely and the vehicle to start. While it may take a fair amount of pressure, do not force either the wheel or the ignition to turn if they seem like they won't. It may result in breaking the steering pin, your key, or other internal components. Once the two are unlocked, the vehicle is able to be driven. If the steering wheel does not unlock, you will need to trouble shoot the problem.

Hi, when you start there is a WHEEL (servo controll light, under in REV meter). I havent got it in my golf 5. But on other videos with other GOLF 5 there is it. HELP ME Pleaseee..
@Dashboardwarninglights
@Dashboardwarninglights 5 місяців тому
@klanki111 Red means you no longer have assisted power steering. Usually its yellow from a battery disconnect. Try this, when I put my new rack in I had to do this. Maybe it'll help? Steering Limit Stop Adaptation (Engine still running) Center steering wheel (±10°) and hold it centered for 5 seconds. Turn steering wheel completely to the left and hold it there for a second. Turn steering wheel completely to the right and hold it there for a second. Center steering wheel (±10°). Switch OFF engine and ignition. Switch ON ignition. Wait 5 seconds. Steering Assist Warning Lamp should turn OFF. If it doesn't, perform a short test drive. If the 02546 - Steering Limit Stop 005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation fault will not clear after driving the vehicle and completing the Golf 5 Steering Assist procedure, increase the time in-between key cycles to 30 seconds or more. If that fails you will need to get suitable diagnostic equipment to check what fault codes are stored in the steering module, all you can do is carry out a steering angle sensor calibration to try fix the problem but sometimes it might need a new steering module or steering rack.

My celerio car shows this power steering symbol before start. When I start it disappear. One or two occasions I have seen this warning light on for some seconds and off when driving. Is it any issues with car.
@Dashboardwarninglights
@Dashboardwarninglights 4 місяці тому
There are several reasons the power steering warning light could turn on. These are: - Low power steering fluid: power steering fluid is essential for smooth operation of the steering system. If the power steering fluid is low, the warning light will turn on - Power steering pump failure: if the pump that pushes the fluid through the steering system fails, the power steering light will turn on - Leak in the power steering system: a leak in the hydraulic system can cause the fluid to drip out, triggering the warning light - Faulty power steering belt: if the belt that drives the power steering pump is broken or slipping, the system won't function properly and may trigger the warning light Electric power steering systems - Electrical faults: problems with the wiring within the power steering system or power steering motor will cause the warning light to illuminate - Software issues: modern electric power steering systems are controlled by software. Any software glitches or failures could potentially turn on the power steering warning light.

@Dashboardwarninglights
@Dashboardwarninglights 8 місяців тому
@marksoria1222 Turn the steering wheel lock to lock by turning it left and right. Grab your steering wheel and turn it all the way to the left like you’re making an extreme left turn. Once the wheels rotate as far as they can to the left wait for 3 second, turn the steering wheel all the way to the right wait for 3 second, This is known as turning the steering wheel from lock to lock, and this process forces air out of your power steering pump and lines. Turning your steering wheel engages the power steering and forces the fluid to cycle through the lines. If there is air trapped in your power steering lines, this pressure forces the air out to the top of the reservoir.

@Dashboardwarninglights
@Dashboardwarninglights 9 місяців тому
Hi @Ali-pu1xw That is going to depend on what type of power steering you have: Traditional belt driven pump, electric-hydraulic pump, or electric. It also depends on whether you washed the engine as well. On the traditional system there could be several belts and you are looking at only one. On the electric-hydraulic, or the electric, a wire could have come loose or fuse blown. You could have also gotten water in a computer terminal There is a pretty good chance it is a coincidence. Fault from servicing or cleaning usually show immediately. But washing engines or engine compartments is a risk. It must be done very carefully. A little water in the wrong place could be costly. I hope to answer your question ?

It is the process of turning the key while applying pressure to the wheel simultaneously that will unlock the steering wheel. The wheel will only move slightly in the direction opposite the pin, but won't move at all in the wrong direction. 7.Do not shake or rock the wheel.

Solution: This is down to a lack of sufficient lubrication on the oil sealing ring that sits on the input shaft. It’s usually caused by a mistake made during production. You will need to buy a new oil seal, ensuring that it is well-lubricated before you replace it. Find your replacement oil seal

@Dashboardwarninglights
@Dashboardwarninglights Місяць тому
@demiesilva7174 The yellow steering wheel with an exclamation point is likely your vehicle's power steering warning light. It's normal for it to illuminate briefly when you turn the key to the "on" position as part of the system's self-check, and then it should turn off when the engine is started. As long as the light goes off when you start the engine and stays off while driving, there shouldn't be an issue.

@Dashboardwarninglights
@Dashboardwarninglights 8 днів тому
@caesarminor482 If the service power steering warning light turns off after you've checked the power steering fluid level and restarted the engine, you can continue driving. However, it's still recommended to have your power steering system inspected by a professional as soon as possible to ensure there are no underlying issues that need attention. Continuing to drive without addressing the problem can lead to further damage to the power steering system, potentially making it difficult to steer the car, especially at low speeds or when parking. So, even if the light goes off, it's better to have the system checked to prevent any future problems.

Turn the steering wheel lock to lock by turning it left and right.

@Dashboardwarninglights
@Dashboardwarninglights 3 місяці тому
@aanuodebode6512 Depends on what is wrong. If it is just leaking fluid from the seals, I can fix it with a $5 bottle of seal swell additive. If it is just low on fluid, some fluid (although I’d put in the additive to stop it from going down again. It if is a loose or leaking hose, it is minimal. It if is the pump, it might be rebuildable for a couple hundred, or replaceable for $500 or so. If it is the steering rack, you are probably looking at $400 for the parts and several hours of labor

@fishaholics8796 2013 Chrysler 300c Car has the Electric PS Pump, not belt driven pump. This is caused by a bad pump. The pump either shorts out internally or it draws too much amperage and it blows the fuse. Either way it will need to be replaced to fix the car. Once it is replaced you should be fine. @vehbifushe-kosove9700 If you can't move it at all, then this is probably an issue with the steering column lock. I thought it had lost the power assist since you were looking to add power steering fluid. They are made so if the electric motor stops you can still steer the car, so it being locked up has to be a bigger issue in the steering column itself. Are you sure you can't move the wheel just with a lot of difficulty? 👉 This has to be an issue with the steering wheel lock inside the column in this case. You will likely have to replace the steering column to get it working again.

@Dashboardwarninglights
@Dashboardwarninglights 16 днів тому
@nickelson81 Fixing fully electric power steering issues can vary depending on the specific problem. Here are some general steps you can take: 👉 Check the power steering fluid: Even though it's electric, some systems still have fluid. Make sure the fluid is at the correct level and not contaminated. 👉 Inspect the fuse: If the power steering suddenly stops working, it might be a blown fuse. Check the fuse box and replace any blown fuses. 👉 Battery voltage: Ensure that the vehicle battery is in good condition and providing sufficient voltage to power the electric steering system. 👉 Check the wiring: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for any damage or loose connections. 👉 Diagnostic scan: Use a diagnostic scan tool to check for any error codes stored in the vehicle's computer system. This can help pinpoint the issue more precisely. 👉 Motor or sensor replacement: If the issue persists, it might be a fault with the electric motor or sensors. In this case, professional diagnosis and potentially component replacement may be necessary. If you're not comfortable with these steps, it's best to have a qualified mechanic diagnose and repair the issue.

Reasons for the Power Steering Light Coming On? Low Power Steering Fluid In hydraulic power steering systems, a common reason for this warning light to come on your dashboard is that the power steering fluid is low. If you see this light turn on when you are driving, you should pull over and immediately check your fluid level. Top it up with the correct fluid as soon as possible, and the light should disappear. Leaks Bear in mind that low power steering fluid usually means that there is a leak that will need to be fixed. Adding more fluid will turn off the warning light, but it is likely to come back on again quite shortly if the fluid is leaking out. If you’ve had to top up your power steering fluid, it’s a good idea to have your car checked by a professional mechanic who can diagnose and repair the problem. Electrical Errors If you have an electric power steering system, the light will not come on to warn you of low fluid levels since there is no power steering fluid being used. In some cases, restarting the engine might be all that you need to do to turn the light off. Sometimes, small errors can happen, which cause the car’s computer to think that there is an issue where there isn’t. If this doesn’t turn the light off, then you will need to take your car to a professional who can diagnose the issue.

@Claudiacuellar9488 Apply pressure to the ignition key (twisting in direction to start) while trying to move the steering wheel from side to side. The steering wheel should release. try using a spare key that you don't normally use. If that works, your main key is probably worn down through normal usage. Also, check the tumbler. It might be worn down from usage, or it could have been damaged if someone tried to steal the car. Also, check the neutral safety switch or shift linkage-if it's not being put in the proper position, the steering and ignition lock can get affected.

No it's not a serious issue with small and light vehicles, no vehicles had power steering before and everyone got along just fine, only trucks and heavy vehicles really need power steering. Without power steering in a small, light vehicle the difference is negligable.

@wordimobi5765 simply removing persistent dashboard warning lights only treats the symptom and not the cause. Disconnect Battery for 5 minutes. 5. Disconnect Battery for 5 minutes and reconnect with ignition key in switch on position. What to Do with Remote Key Fobs 1. Check batteries in remote. 2. Press button on remote with batteries removed. 3. Disconnect Battery on car for 5 minutes. 4. Hold button down for a few seconds. 5. Hold both buttons down for a few seconds. 6.
