On paper, the idea looked great! Building the first Mercedes 12 into 1 headers to make this M120 V12 sound like a F1 racecar, or at least like a Pagani Zonda. Absolutely not keyword related mentions: Donut Media and effspot insane $12,000 exhaust, nor Brilliant exhaust S600 orJP Performance 500E V12.

I love this. Engineering is hard. Automotive engineering is even harder. Automotive fluid dynamics is a dark art. UKposts could use more examples of showing the often underwhelming results of trying new things and the iterative and often painstaking process of improvement. So refreshing compared to cookie cutter projects that everyone pretends to be amazing and makes everything seem so easy or black and white.

Hi Octav... glad you found the new video already. How was your drift season. Did the turbo V12 hold up?
@OctavChelaru
@OctavChelaru 5 місяців тому
@@maisteer Hey hey, don't underestimate my commitment, I actually managed to catch it Premiere. You really outdid yourself with this one. On my side, the S14 V12 Turbo build was constantly delayed every race by various factors human factors. Rollcage guy a few months, wiring guy etc. So I never got drive it yet, quite annoying. In an awesome turn of events, though, the first S13 V12 Turbo built here by one of our top tuners 11 years ago became available for sale. I wanted her since I first saw her so I worked out a deal and bought her at the final round. Makes 600whp 800wnm at 0.8 bar and 700/900 at 1 bar, internally stock M73B54. So I did get to drive a V12 Turbo Silvia, albeit only a few laps because I managed to put it into the wall slightly in quali. We suspect a number of technic issues led to that and while it looks dramatic, the damage was rather limited and fixed overnight. I have a video of the lap and crash on my channel if you want to check it out. There's a lot to say, might come back with detailed feedback but in short: Godly powerband, powertrain feels invinciple, I like the noise but it's mostly screaming big turbo, not V12, lighter than you'd think (1240kg 57/43) but still very front heavy and polar inertia is heavily affected. Having what is likely the biggest turbo in the paddock in front of a V12 makes it feel what I imagine a V16 feels like :) I also found it harder to "grab" the ground in search for grip compared to a smaller engine with less inertia and instant torque. Can drive around that, of course, but it is a characteristic. But it's unfair to judge the car only after 5 laps and before I get to put a good setup and geometry on it. It has tons of potential we hope to unleash next year. I'll be using it as my backup car but main it while the S14 is built to DMEC standards and get a different powertrain in it, no rushing. S13 scratches my V12 itch and feels like a great reliable practice car but the laggy polar inertia doesn't fit my style at all so will be moving away from V12 on the S14. Likely 2JGTE which is still heavy and long but fits the bill in other ways. Long rant, sorry, but that's why it took so long to reply, had to find a window.
@maisteer
@maisteer 5 місяців тому
I hope everything will work out in the end and that you can get the 2jz done without as many problems as the V12. Wish you a succesful offseason then and keep me posted. And that crash looked quite violent from the drone ^_^

At this point you could try to detach the headers from the engine, place a little speaker at each exhaust inlet (one at a time) and a microphone at the collector and do a loopback sine sweep measurement with REW (roomeqwizard) to check if all runners actually have the same acoustic frequency response and more importantly time delay. I believe the high pitched sound can only build up if the pulses are timed exactly right, like down to a few 100 microseconds or maybe even less idk. It's like with some synthesizers, where you have 2 sawtooth oscillators (D50 for example). If you delay one by exactly 180° the sound is one octave up. delay it slightly less or more and the lower octave comes back immediately. Just my uneducated guess though. Anyway keep up the good work and great content!!
@DaEVOthefreak
@DaEVOthefreak 5 місяців тому
yes, that can be true. Can be its on the fidelity of the built. I know that,😂 couse HF=high fidelity. I testet that issue with my Model D and SH101 on the roof of my Lancia. It worked perfect! ✌
@maisteer
@maisteer 5 місяців тому
I didn't understand the loopback part fully yet from reading it, but I will look into it. I think I understand the concept of what you're trying to say and it sounds like a plausible and really good idea to check. Just as a note tough. The timing has to be spot on and that depends on the distance AND speed. And if we have different temperatures and/or pressures the pulse speed will be different between cylinders and then the timing will be off too, despite being equal distance. But just as a side note. There many things to get right at the same time, I believe.

This would possibly be a great way to measure "exhaust frequency response". Never crossed my mind. But the speaker should have a proper air-tight adapter to fit the header inlet. Maybe also a closed enclosure. I'd probably use something like a 4-5" high power wide range speaker. In a perfect system one would have ten speakers behind a 10 channel DSP that is able to adjust delay in very small increments. That could be used to tune the header lengths. And measuring could be done one at a time or just as many as one wants. One could also make holes for additional mics, to measure the response in different parts of the system, though it could have little to no use, depending how the sound waves behave inside. I would really like to see someone try to test how the response curves from this kind of measurements would relate to actual output. I can imagine a way to sweep the actual engine and making a corresponding 3D graph of the exhaust frequency response. Think of a response graph, but add them one after another like one per 10-100rpm and show it a bit like a 3D fuel map.

FUEL QUANTITY!!!!!! i ben down this road and i dont publish. the stuff i do , too busy, not on facebook nor instagram. but i can tell you, you're looking at pipe length, pipe sequence, diameter, cam duration and you have made NO MENTION ABOUT FUEL QUANTITY. fuel quantity is thee most important factor to sexy noise next to ignition timing and cam duration. my rig is similar to that old shelby on your last video. sounds the same, ok, mine sounds better and higher pitch but when i removed the 500cfm 4bbl holley for a 210cfm 80's 1bbl toyota corolla carburetor, the good sound went away and the redline dropped 2000rpm from 10,400rpm down to 8,500rpm. fuel increases pressure wave amplitude and pressure wave onset rate or gain or jerk force, whatever you wanna call it. i bet if you put bigger injectors like 32lb or 40lb and retarded your timing and changed nothing else, , that F1 v12 sound would come out of your rig. good luck.

Must be frustrating to not have the result you wanted yet, after all that hard work. However this is why it's called "tuning" and not "Randomly slap Ebay parts onto your car". Persistence is key! Great to see you are sticking with it. Also did the V12 car ever get on the dyno? I swear it sounds exactly how an engine does when you've got a fairly open exhaust but not enough ignition timing. If you're running a conservative timing map to keep the motor "safe" then yeah it usually sounds gross, especially at low load. Because the gas is still aggressively expanding at the time it's coming out of the exhaust pipe, rather than pushing the piston down. So it sounds a bit more "chaotic" and loud out of the pipe. It would be interesting to hold the motor at a set rpm and load and adjust ignition timing forward or back by say 10 degrees and see if you notice a change in sound quality.

"Also did the V12 car ever get on the dyno?" - not yet, Tim wanted to fix the throttle actuation before, as he noticed at the Iron Drift King they needed some improvement. I'm also curious what the tuning will do to the sound, and also how the power curve will look.

I really appreciate that you're enough of a scientist (and I also appreciate that Tim is enough of s sport to pull the motor *yet again*) to swap back in the other merge collector after you realized the "dead bank" issue to see if that was actually the required piece of the puzzle.
@GeorgeXian

Absolutely incredible content! There's been a lack of decent publicly available research onto what makes cars sound a certain way. I think most supercar companies only have a few guys that understand the theory but that is becoming a dying art in the age of efficiency and electrification. Finally it is community that'll crack the code.

@@maisteer I'd say somehow find someone at Yamaha who worked on the Lexus LFA, somehow they made that thing sound so beautiful
@TassieLorenzo
@TassieLorenzo 3 місяці тому
@@isaiah9639 They have the advantage of being able to do trial and error. Theory and/or computer simulation only go so far. Say the topic of eliminating drone: sometimes it's as unsophisticated as measuring the frequency response and working out what the droning frequency of the exhaust is and putting on the quarter-wave tube or Helmholtz resonator to cancel that out (or changing the design to avoid that) -- as much it would be nice to predict it precisely on the simulation or by theory. Anyway for what it's worth you can Google the Lexus LF-A exhaust design. It looks like it is a 5-1 collector with a pretty steep merge angle. It is true dual back to the rear muffler and the only crossover between the banks is inside the rear muffler somehow. It looks like the primaries are maybe 45mm (?) and it goes into either 60mm or 65mm.

I am glad to finally see another person who knows about how cylinder groupings affect exhaust pitch. You’ve done an excellent job with the manifold, now please give Kreissieg a chance with the remainder of your exhaust system. They are the best that I have seen when it comes to the post-manifold work.
