How to Free Yourself from the Past | A Monk's Perspective
In our life, we will experience many hardships. Some hardships may impact us negatively and get us stuck. In this video, I wanted to share an approach to looking at one's life in a way does not keep you stuck. This looks at our issues from the lens of wisdom. Simply take only the good parts or the parts that are beneficial and let go of the rest. For anyone who is going through a difficult time, I hope this is helpful. #monks #buddhism #mentalhealth

What I'm hearing from this is - difficult situations open our hearts to others. We as humans share these painful emotions, and having gone through them ourselves allows us to see it in others, to relate, and to comfort one another better.

From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Matthew 4:17 God loves and blesses you!✝✝✝ Turn away from these evil things and turn and seek Jesus Christ for hope, love, and peace! God loved us so much that he sent his one and only son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins so that one day we can see God in heaven and go to heaven! Ask Jesus Christ for forgiveness for your sins and He will forgive you because He is a merciful God! Repent before it's too late!!!✝✝✝ SYMBOL OF LOVE✝✝✝

Nick, you are an inspiration. I've seen/listened to a few of your videos but sharing your life story got my attention. You've had so much experience in this life: refugee, student, dancer, therapist, your break-up, monk....I admire how you put your heart into whatever you do. And the immigrant skills you talk about ie observation, work ethic etc., are characteristics we should all appreciate and hold in high esteem. My grandparents came from China and they had similar obstacles.... I can see now how their hard work and resilience have impacted many generations. Thank you Nick for sharing and your insight. I'm a grandma and appreciate your wisdom.

Having grown up in a very volatile and toxic family I feel like there's a lot of versions of me that are fractured along my childhood. Those parts of me that never developed properly whether due to parental damage or neglect, those parts still affect me. I don't have much of an identity and I've been working in therapy to get more in touch with myself. Even though I'm safe and no contact with all my abusers the past still weighs me down

I can relate myself with your story. Many times and many ways I feel lost and I know its because of my childhood. I'm 45 today, but still without my real myself. I grow up with alcoholic dad and mum who always drag him out of all troubles. Never ever had a chance to hear a word like I love you ir I proud of you from both parents...

The big thing that helped my free myself from the past is forgiving others that hurt/disappointed me. Sometimes people forget that forgiveness mainly helps the victim…it frees the soul of the emotional burden that unforgiving tends to leave behind.

As a child I was never loved by my mum, she made it known in many small ways. It wasn’t until I was a mum myself I asked my Dad why? He just said to me I didn’t think you knew and that has stayed with me for years, you have made me realise the fault was not mine I was just a child, but it made me love each of my sons with my whole heart. Much love and light always ❤️🙏🏻

This video is helping so many beyond understanding. Thank you Nick. I too was a child immigrant and only now as an adult, am learning the trauma that I suffered as a child had affected my entire life as an adult. Your words resonate more deeply than one can imagine . My world crumbled very recently this year when both my mother and mother in law died . Their deaths were ofcourse confrontational but it was the childhood trauma of an immigrant child left at boarding school that resurfaced which actually broke me. I am now on a conscious middle path and you are helping me. Thank you Nick.❤

Thank you for this presentation. One way we get stuck in the past is when we are in the habit of feeling sorry for ourselves. Here are excerpts from Steps to Knowledge that take a deeper look at self-pity as a false sense of oneself. "How can you pity yourself when Knowledge is with you? Pity must only reassert an old idea of yourself, which is bereft of truth, bereft of hope and bereft of any meaningful foundation. Do not pity yourself today for you are not pitiful. If this day is sad or confused, it is only because you have lost contact with Knowledge (the deeper mind within you) which you may practice today to regain... Be aware of the many forms of self-pity that you entertain... the many subtle forms of manipulation of others as you attempt to make them like or accept you according to a view of yourself that you are attempting to claim. When you are with Knowledge, you do not need to proclaim yourself; you do not need to control others to like or accept you, for Knowledge is with you... No being who is pitiful can enter into silence, for silence is the experience of profound relationship, and stillness is the acceptance of profound love. Who can be pitiful under such circumstances?"(Marshall Vian Summers, Steps to Knowledge)

True, it’s so easy to give into our emotions and have a pity party. Then under the sorrow sneaks out some anger. It’s a great challenge to forgive, to see the brokenness in others, to climb out of ourselves and not make everything all about “me”. We have a loving Creator to guide us and He had given us wonderful teachers. Indeed we are Loved. We are blessed!

I can truly relate to what you are saying. My mom passed away two years ago and that was the moment that brought me to my knees. All the thinkings and fantasies in my head were broken and I was brought back to a full reality. Although this pain will forever be felt every time when I think of my mom, I know she is now pain free and free of suffering. I am happy at this point in my life, of where I’m and who I’ve become. Looking back when she was bound to bed by sickness is no help, so I let part of myself died with my mom. And let the broken pieces of me to regroup and create a new version of myself. Thank you for your sharing always.

Thank you. So helpful. I was in a violent relationship. I had to leave my children and unstable wife behind. I never returned and started all over again. It took ten years to feel good again. Happiness is inside and yes I matter. I visited the local Bhuddist Monastery and left all my troubles mentally there. They stay next to the Bhudda image and have never to leave it. So I walk free. This video is wonderful and thank you. Time and slowly walk free. I was a, battered husband, no one ever understood, I had to do it for myself and leave it all behind emotionally.

I am currently going through hearing for a crime I did not commit based upon lies told by corrupt officers. Each lie that has been proven has simply been brushed aside by the judge. Evidence that proves my innocence has been destroyed and apparently no one knows how, it was ruled an 'unfortunate accident'. The other side even came out to say ' it does not matter' if I do not get a fair trial. The judge allowed it. With the system failing me I turned to the local monasteries who I had been donating to for years for spiritual guidance, it fell on death ears, so much for this 'symbiotic relationship' with lay people. They were happy to take me stuff and then sent me away when I asked for help.

The ending thought on this video was incredibly powerful: "we need you." So validating to hear this. A lot of abuse survivors hear over and over that we're worthless, so coming out on the other side and hearing that you're needed...? Wow. Thank you for this reminder, brother.

I’m glad I found you on you tube. I grew up the family scapegoat and suffer narcissistic abuse. I have found your reasoning and life lessons are helping me process and go forward feeling grounded. I read a lot about narcissistic people and how they need a victim. You are teaching me to instead live a mindful life of my own grateful for the good things. Thank you so much, I think you must be helping many people!!

Thank you, for sharing some of your life's experiences. There is so much help in your words (and kindness). Very inspiring and motivating! I am 52 years old and recently (the last 2-3 years) have been going through, a series of losses (divorce, mother, father, uncle, aunts, friends and pets). I find myself focusing on the negative people who are left (or their actions), instead of the good people(and their actions) and/or the future possibilities (and of course, the here and now). In a way, the universe has blessed me. By clearing my perspective, I can see the impact of people (good and bad) in my life. It is kind of weird and at times a little overwhelming. Some things are hard to let go of, and your juicing analogy is brilliant! Occasionally, it feels like I am starting over again, with nothing. But that is not true. There are the lessons learned, knowledge gained and the good memories (along with new ones to come). Your advice gives me a good direction to heal my past (and let the toxic aspects/people go). Thank you again! I hope I wasn't too wordy (or over sharing), be safe and take care! Much love!

Thank you for your personal share, Nick! I can relate to everything you said. I also stayed in the Philippines refugee camp in the early 1980s and came to the San Diego as an immigrant. I was 7 at the time. I struggled with having two identities all my life (being an Asian American) ... and questioning who am I? What is my true nature? What is my true identity? I learned a lot from your journey. I've listened to most of your videos in the past year and you've been a GREAT MENTOR to me. Thank you and I wish you safe travels and peace and love around you.

Hi Nick, thank you for this video. All my pains and regrets are the result of wanting things, especially chicks! I am getting rid of my physical possessions, but find it difficult to get rid of my past. The less junk I have the happier I become. What I own ends up owning me. I took down the TV aerial and it was like a weight was lifted from my shoulders. No more TV, no more useless news. I am going to research more Buddhist philosophy. I will unclutter my mind and only remember the good things that resulted from my life experiences.

Nick, thank you for your humble and sincere sharing of your own life experiences. This video really resonated with me. I like your analogy of the blender and the idea of focusing on the positive aspects of our experience while learning from the negative. I have found that adversity is painful but it is also a great teacher of wisdom. I sometimes work with silver, and the metal must be tempered and softened with fire before it can be formed into a thing of beauty. So it is with all of us. The beauty is there, waiting to come forth. Many blessings and peace to you as you journey in the United States.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful words of wisdom. I can relate to some of what you say. I had endured a difficult home life as a child and had experienced traumatic experiences in the past. From it, I became a better, more emphatic individual to the point that it can be draining when I am in a negative situation for too long and I also feel sick when around individuals that are ill. I too in order to survive my experiences I have learned to read people and to look at things from all perspectives to better understand life and what I may be facing at a given time. I have learned so much from the past. I am grateful for the lessons I've learned and the personal growth .

I suppose, Meditation with Mantra is the best remedy to come out of past because Buddha also emphasised to move on in life for self-realization. One must remember that whatever happens in life is for betterment and good because the Creator is unbiased and knows our needs and deeds.

@@nickkeomahavong01 If I am not mistaken then setbacks of past show us a new path in life. In fact, setbacks are God-gifted events to take us for something positive to happen in life. As in your case also, you left US job to be a monk because you faced a serious setback in personal relationship. If I am not mistaken, then that particular negative happening became a blessing in disguise and you attained monkhood, which again is the best thing to happen in one's life. I am not so lucky to be a monk to indulge in infinite meditation. Thanks & regards.

Great video! Thank you for sharing, I can't imagine how scary that must have been as a young child. I'm so glad you made it to the U.S.A. 😊 It took awhile, but yes, I feel free from the past. You really have to think and believe that it's over, you can't change it, you have to move forward. For me, it was grieving. After losing both of my parents ( in a 16 year gap) I really took to heart that you can't stay heartbroken and sad forever. You are still on this earth and have a life to live. They wouldn't want you to fall apart as they have moved on and it's ok. Memories make me smile and are happy. Walk on everyone. ❤️

I'm posting these words of John O'Donohue which have helped me with the exhaustion that often comes with suffering. Stay clear of those vexed in spirit. Take refuge in your senses, open up To all the small miracles you rushed through. Become inclined to watch the way of rain When it falls slow and free. Imitate the habit of twilight, Taking time to open the well of color That fostered the brightness of day. Draw alongside the silence of stone Until its calmness can claim you. Be excessively gentle with yourself. JOHN O'DONOHUE Excerpt from the blessing, 'For One Who is Exhausted,' from John's books: Benedictus (Europe) / To Bless the Space Between Us (US)
