if you are serious I would recommend getting professionally fit and explaining your back issues to the fitter. I was in a car accident and have severe spinal stenosis L5/S1 and had to give up my APEX Blades with x-stiff rifle shafts. Moved to stiff graphite and while I don't score like I used to I still love the game and can mostly hold my own....

From a personal trainers perspective I would recommend seeing a professional with an understanding of human body movement, injury prevention, and an understanding of how one moves in golf. A good strength and conditioning coach would be invaluable in helping you prevent back injuries.

Scott I gave up the game for 12 years after hurt my back. I got back playing again with my brother. What I noticed is my back swing is about 3/4 now but I’m now hitting the ball well. When I left off golfing I was a bogey golfer about 18 handicap I’m getting back in playing shape so I can play multiple rounds in a day and play several days in a row. Go slow and work back up to playing shape. I can’t lie I was very sore and tired the first few rounds but kept getting stronger now I’m playing great for my ability. Enjoy your rounds every time could be the one you get an eagle or hole in 1. Oh did I mention I’m 55 years young and looking forward to years of playing with my kids awesome times! Thanks for sharing

Yo Rick one thing you didn't take into consideration is the fact that the greens you were hitting into were just top dressed with sand. That first shot you hit would have probably spun back several feet if not for the sand. The ball tends to skip off of sand and takes a lot of the spin off. I am a retired Golf course superintendent and my golfers would always gripe after a good top dressing because the ball would run more. I would always tell them sand is a supers best friend when it comes to greens. Once the grass grows up around the sand it makes for a much better putting surface as the sand smoothes the surface. Hope that didn't bore everyone to tears and yawns.

Wind only effects spin. The wind minimally, if at all, effects speed and distance. The ball goes shorter into the wind because that wind drives up spin and lift together which kills distance. That’s why you club up and or knock the flight down because lower loft and trajectory kill spin. Going down wind kills lift and spin so you need more of both to stop the ball. We see it more obviously on side wind how a left wind magnifies draws and kills fades. Those side winds change backspin as well. A draw with a left wind kills backspin and a fade into a left wind adds backspin. That’s how you use the wind to do things not normally possible. Like stopping a 4i real quick or adding 40 yards to a drive.

Speaking from the "spin master" (myself), there are two factors I believe you may have overlooked. The first one is the rate of acceleration into the ball. There are two factors of club head speed, the first being the true speed at instant of impact and the seconding being the acceleration rate just prior to and during instant of impact. The higher the acceleration rate, maintaining the same true impact speed, the greater the ability to spin the ball. Not all club head speed is the same, and this makes a HUGE difference on spin rate. The second point I think you may have missed is the "pinch", and is also a big factor why it is so much more difficult to get spin out of longer grass, and why it is easy to get spin on hard pan. That is, pinching the ball between the initial impact zone and the ground. The more of that "pinch" you get, the more spin you can generate. So, when you couple an exaggerated acceleration rate of club head speed with maximum "pinch" you generate the greatest amount of spin rate. You don't need to "increase loft" in order to do this, in fact, you can actually generate greater spin rates with a greater forward shaft lean. You witness this technique done on tour all the time, in particular with pitching. In fact it is precisely taught by all of the greatest short game coaches in the world. I have, at times, been able to get as much as a 6' spin back on a green with a pitch from only 10-15 yards, with a 60° wedge and about a 12-15° forward shaft lean. How is that possible? .. Well, to do this, I simply maximize acceleration and maximize the "pinch" by optimizing the angle of attack into the ball and the optimum ball strike, just ever so slightly below the equator of the ball, causing a real "pinch" between the club face and ground. It takes a lot of practice to get all of these angles and the acceleration just right, but when you do .. SPIN CITY !! .. perhaps it may be easiest to think of the game of billiards, or as we mostly refer to it in America as "pool". I used to be the "spin master" when I played pool too. Contrary to popular belief, getting such spin isn't done by striking the ball at its lowest point of the ball, but instead, striking the ball WITH ACCELERATION, as close to the bottom side of the EQUATOR of the ball as possible. That is, striking as close to the equator as you can, increasing the gear ratio. This is the GEAR effect! .. and since you increased the "gear ratio" by striking the ball so close to the equator (just like gearing up on your bicycle), it requires more energy .. or MORE impact speed .. and most importantly .. a greater ACCELERATION into the ball. This very same principal holds true for golf as well, although I must admit, it is a lot easier to do it with a billiard cue than a golf club. 🏌️ 😎 ... but if you get a chance, next time you are playing billiards (pool), play with it a little bit until you get the feel for what I mean. You can create some wicked backspin if done properly. Transfer this same principal to your golf and VOILA !! . you will have MONSTER backspin any time you wish.

I use a 60 degree lob wedge and hit down on it hard. Rick, its hard to send you suggestions but maybe you will see this. Could you do a comparison between a premium ball and various (new) range balls? You did a comparision a while back with ones your facility had, but I am talking Srixons, Pinnacle Practice, Nike Range, Wilson, etc etc. Its a curiosity as to how much spin, launch angle and especially ball speed can differ from one kind to another since they are made to be so durable. Thanks!

Never hit down on the ball. The angle of attack is too steep and you can actually increase the chances of taking spin off and increasing the chance of mishits.

Great video Rick. However, I need some clarification. It's my understanding that when hitting to a green downwind, the wind prevents the ball from gaining its full height and, therefore, lessens the descent angle and the ability of the ball to grab the green. Conversely, hitting into the wind allows the ball to climb (as you said) and land with a steeper/greater descent angle which allows the zippy spin. I wondered how hitting into the wind increased the ball spin?
@LukeKwonGolf
@LukeKwonGolf 6 років тому
Good information except the maximizing loft part. You will see tour pros and college golfers hit wedge shots at a much flatter trajectory. The higher the ball flight the more the ball “rolls up the face” and decreases spin. Obviously too low a shot isnt ideal either but you definitely dont want to maximize loft. Theres a sweet spot for wedge trajectory (slightly lower) for maximum spin. Don't take my word for it lol just watch them.
@hertsman10
@hertsman10 6 років тому
Yes this is very true there is a point where adding loft will take spin a way, the concept of spin loft is not really mentioned here at all. Also I'm not convinced grooves are a big deal for spin its more to do with the surface finish of the club, the micro grooves or grading of the grit blast finish. Take an old wedge sharpen the grooves and measure the spin then take the same wedge and get the face grit blasted, the latter will produce way more spin.
@LukeKwonGolf
@LukeKwonGolf 6 років тому
Antony Osborn yeah exactly. I’m not super familiar with spin loft but I do know that spin loft, dynamic loft and AoA play a big role in creating spin. Not really sure about the face texture being a big factor. Personally I thought it was just a gimmick that maybe adds a tiny bit of spin for the first month where the rough texture is still on the wedge. The wind “adding spin” is wrong here too lol its just changing the landing angle into the green so its either more receptive or less receptive
@hertsman10
@hertsman10 6 років тому
Luke Kwon Golf check out Joe Mayo for good spin loft videos and James Ridyard for the diminishing returns on spin when you add to much loft. I do think it's a shame when UKposts instruction which is taken as gospel by so many is flawed and poorly researched especially when Rick has access to the equipment that would show much of what is said he is wrong

@markdelej
@markdelej 6 років тому
Luke Kwon Golf it’s the loft on the club is like 60 degrees but because the balls digs into the grooves it shoots off the face at a much lower trajectory. So yes the spinny wedge shots come out lower but they were hit with a lot of loft rather than a punch shot which goes low but has less loft on the club

The wind part you included is embarrassingly wrong. The wind doesn’t make the ball spin more or less, all it’s doing is changing the decent angle of the ball into the green making it react differently (into wind making it land steeper because the magnus effect making the ball balloon more, down wind the opposite, and it’s pushing the ball further making it come into the green more shallow)
@markyboy4777
@markyboy4777 6 років тому
abrokenmailbox I thought the video shows visually what you are describing, if not explained in the same way verbally. It wasn't in-depth enough really, but I'm sure there are other videos out there about playing into wind etc. Are you suggesting that the wind blowing into the ball has zero effect on the balls spin? Also what is a decent angle? Lol.
@LukeKwonGolf
@LukeKwonGolf 6 років тому
The ball doesn't spin more because of the wind lol the spin on the ball + head wind makes the ball climb upwards. And because of this upward climb it changes the "descent angle" aka the angle the ball lands into the green. A ball landing 90 degrees into the green is going to be able to grab the green and spin way easier than a ball that is landing at a 20 degree angle where it still has momentum going forward before the spin on the ball can grab onto the surface. So vice versa, downwind shots will have a shallower descent angle/landing angle therefore the ball needs some bounces to get rid of the forward momentum before the ball can grab onto the surface.
@forrosailor
@forrosailor 6 років тому
Jesus you people. What information do you think is valuable to an amateur who likely doesn't understand much physics? Jesus christ you nit picky bastards. While hitting into a head wind the affect will be as if the ball has significantly more spin than with no wind or a tail wind. That's literally all anyone needs to know. Your description, while accurate, literally doesn't provide info any more useful than what Rick said, other than your description may be harder for most dummies to grasp. Rick's explanation works, makes sense to anyone watching, and will have the exact same affect on someone's gameplay... so all you achieved here is making an ass of yourself...good job
@LukeKwonGolf
@LukeKwonGolf 6 років тому
Justin Forro Sure I agree with you, this kind of information is for the bare beginner basics. Its overly generalized and not the whole truth (the maximizing loft part is wrong here as well). But this kind of vague information is exactly what keeps people at their beginner stages because they dont have the actual understanding of whats going on so they cant have proper course management. Thats exactly the problem with golf instruction has had until recent years. Overly generalized half true info for the beginner amateurs. Don’t take my word for it lol, many of the top instructors are doing the same thing finally. Giving true info backed by data and cutting out simplified phrases that alot of people misinterpret.

You failed to mention spin loft and angle of attack, which determines alot of the "spin". Also, striking below the center of gravity will increase spin due to the gearing effect, thus low launch but high spin. Justin Forro I just want a coach to know what creates spin so that he can teach it properly, this not being the case. If you watch any tour pro you will instantly acknowledge that the shots with the most backspin are not the highest ones, just the opposite to what rick is saying, and there are reasons for this (based on some simple physics) that a good coach should at least understand in order to teach properly.

You probably can’t spin it with md 4’s or 1800’s hickory’s

Thanks Rick. Always enjoy your very practical counsel on things like this. Love the "loft measuring" method using the sticky tee or the magnetic tool. My wife is just learning and I'm going to use that to help her visualize the loft of the club. Excellent!

Thanks for the video. On shorter shots, 30 yds or less, I have always set my wrists forward as a means to help me from decelerating at impact, and wondered why I wasn't getting spin on crisp contact. Now I know, and know I have something to work on! Around the green I usually use my A wedge or a 60.

Great vlog Rick full of great info. To be honest I haven't really cared about creating spin in the past. However now that my game is getting more consistent I am looking to get a new wedge or two to start getting backspin. Cheers

I am really enjoying your videos. They are helping me learn more about myself and golf. At the beginning of the Spring 2020 I was a 25-28 handicap. It is late Sept and I have cut it down to 19-20. As I get more confident I am sure before this season is over I will have cut my handicap down 10+ strokes.
