Won’t the bottom dado hold water and cause rot decay or did the drill/bore weep holes?

A lot of great tips to help increase the life span. Very good work. I was looking for a clean looking fence to cross hogs from my place through the neighbors property to a pasture. This will fit his fence profile.

Looks great! I’ll be doing a much smaller dog run this weekend. Just 6 panels and a gate.
@dajo4349Рік тому
Nice job. We're going to do the same thing. How did you set up the long drive through gate? Looks like it's on rollers? Do you have brackets that keep the top and/or bottom contained when it's sliding? Do you add anything to allow for smooth sliding? When making hinged gates like you did with 2x4's, how much gap do you have between the gate ends and the side posts or how much wider is the opening than the gate to allow for the swinging end to clear the adjacent post? Thanks.

Nice. Should put a paver under those gate wheels though, that way the wheels aren't driven into the bare ground over time and gives the springs a solid supporting foundation to do their job and keep the gates up.

I have the same HF or maybe Home Depot( I don't remember) Delta Shop master table saw and I love it! Been going strong for 20 years now and I still rip boards with it!
@columbiariverhandyman7 місяців тому
We burnt ours up because we cut so many.
@nmartin555128 днів тому
I have that Same Delta. Mine from HD. Been about 16 years. Ive never tried a dado blade. I was wondering about that volume of ripping.
@USMC-Sniper-013728 днів тому
@@nmartin5551 Should be just fine. Been putting mine through the paces for over twenty years and you wouldn't know it. I would start out slow but it should be fine with a fresh blade.

The fence looks great! One question, any concerns with water/snow/ice standing in the dado?
@mav890310 місяців тому
That’s a good point. It’d be smart to not dado that bottom board. Having a dado on top and bottom would be sufficient.
@minipeppers69286 місяців тому
If it's properly sealed and coated it should last quite a while. But the lower dado I'd probably skip and cover with a 1x1 instead

@Bullmanure24Рік тому
Love this, but how would you do it on an uphill slope?
@columbiariverhandymanРік тому
That’s a good question. Haven’t had to do it yet but I’d start by figuring out you hill angle and then miter everything so it fits between you posts the way they should.

Aren’t they 2x4s gonna warp and sag in the middle over time? It looks great.
@mav890310 місяців тому
That’s a good question. Be interesting to see how the fence holds up.

I also want to know if they will warp without a vertical support.

Just curious what this entire project cost because I'm having a hard time pricing this same kind of fence design for a customers project they would like done. They only need about 100' installed. Great video btw. A lot of useful information and loved watching it come together
@columbiariverhandymanМісяць тому
The 2x4’s and 4x4’s were $6k owner had already purchased hog panels. It’s very labor intensive so I’d try to match labor cost similar to whatever material cost. Even then you might still be a bit under on labor.
@dennisdickson28922 місяці тому
How did you ensure the accuracy of your holes to allow each section to fit perfectly on each post?
@columbiariverhandyman2 місяці тому
Measured holes out using an 8’ cut piece.
@nekoDanРік тому
Looks pretty good! It looks like the lumber is pressure treated. Do you have any concerns about re applying a stain or coating in the dado groves? Also I’d expect water to fill the bottom grove. Perhaps a 1/2” drill hole through would allow the water to drain?
@ianphillips5624Рік тому
Looks like cedar
@mav890310 місяців тому
No dado on bottom would be a better solution.
@texascrossbowdude6367 місяців тому
@@mav8903with no dado on the bottom board does the panel just rest on it and does the panel fit loosely in the dado on the other 3 boards
@jalotbc8 місяців тому

I cut it at a half an inch.

Does anyone have suggestions on what you could do to fill the gap at the bottom of the fence that still looks good?
@walzgryРік тому
a 2x6
@JJstram84Рік тому
You can make that gap at the bottom as big or small as you want. The just buy a 1x or 2x depending on the size of the gap
@rostamr40966 місяців тому
What is the size and gauge for the wire mesh? and where can get them? Thanks

Standard Hog wire panel fencing. You can find it at most farm supply stores

Did u have 8' panels? They only sale 16' panels here.
@columbiariverhandyman8 днів тому

@gossipcornerhomestead5 місяців тому
What is the cost of something like this versus a "more traditional" fence?
@columbiariverhandyman5 місяців тому
Depends on the linear footage. This style is very labor intense

you know all that lovely sawdust is highly toxic. Not at all good to spread around in the soil. breathing it also isn't such a great idea. Love your dado blade idea for the slot rather than a router. But what about using a U-track instead of the extra wood and all that time. The track can be aluminum and will never rust, you can easily screw them into each piece of wood on 3 sides and then add the top rail with track. also don't forget to drill a small hole at each end and middle of the lower track to drain out water and prevent rusting of your hog fence. Hog Track is a brand that sells such a track, but you can buy U-profile material in bulk from places like McMaster. They are fastened inside the track with a stainless screw (exterior at least).
@JJstram84Рік тому
Prob between 50-80 per panel for u-track. With this size job that's $1500-2500
@jeffhildreth9244Рік тому
Looks good except: You didn't center the wire panel on the gate, nor did you center the wire panels in each section. There's the right way and every other way, this was every other way. More work, yes, but there is no such thing as good enough .
