SENSE has been around for a little while, and recently partnered with Schneider Electric (Square D) to provide a monitoring system that allows you to see your electrical system and have data available through an app!
The Wiser Energy Monitor is an easy product to install, it really takes minutes for an electrician to put in. And once connected to a wifi network begins to scan the entire electrical system for devices and information. Over a few weeks you'll get messages from the system when it recognizes common loads like "coffee maker," "fridge," "AC," Furnace," etc.
Over a month or so you'll have enough historical data that you'll be able to see what the efficiencies and inefficiencies are in your system, and how your system compares to others like you.
Wiser also allows you to see what's happening in your electrical system in real time, so you're able to monitor when certain loads turn on and off through the app. This is helpful if you need to monitor the use of certain devices in your home.

I take care of my dad's rentals. It never fails that a tenant will hook up a power strip to a power strip and have all sorts of chargers and transformers for cable boxes, gaming stuff, etc. Every receptacle is a spider's nest. We started rewiring our units so there are two duplex receptacles per box and no more that 3 boxes per 2 pole 240 breaker. Yes, each box has 240 fed to it, but I swear, I have never had to go in the middle of the night to reset a breaker. And yes...every hole has a plug in it and some still have power strips.

OK, so I've ordered one for my house, using the ElectricianU discount code. Thanks. It means I can do planning for the future. In the SF Bay area, several cities have banned gas installations in new build, for environmental reasons, and since I agree with the effort, I'll be moving towards all-electric in my old house. But I need to knon what my usage is to know where to take this personally. I'm just a homeowner, but also a marine engineer, so I'm learning a lot of technique, but I know the technical stuff.

I have had a Sense installed in my panel for a little over 4 years. One of the most annoying things about the device detection is that it if the device has multiple types of power loads it will often show up as two devices. Such as a Dehumidifier that has a compressor and a blower. It does great on total power usage of our home. You do have to manage it to get various lights and devices learned. I would really like to see them offer little wifi power plugs that can monitor a load directly or even more clamps for branch circuits and not rely on their machine learning that can take forever or never occur.

I just recently got one of these but haven’t installed it yet. Seeing in the manual where it specifically says “compatible with Square D 15-30 A breakers” has me concerned, I assumed it was compatible with all types of breakers. Mine is the tan type of breakers so it’s either CH or or maybe Eaton brand. Either way I’m out of space for any more breakers so my original plan was I was going to have to do a pigtail. I was going to use 2 pieces of 10 gauge to connect to a 30 amp 2-pole breaker that is feeding my clothes dryer. Should this work?

This is pretty cool. One thing I wonder about is data privacy though. Beyond just collecting data for advertising.. there is a hacking technique known as a side-channel attack. It basically is a broad term describing a method of breaching a target system by monitoring data on a "side-channel" such as monitoring RF output from a crt monitor or monitoring power usage of components (could be the computer itself, the monitor or even the keyboard). Whether or not such an attack would be feasible given the current draw over mains is debatable.. but I doubt it is completely impossible. It's a really cool hacking technique though imo.

Great timing on this video. Been doing some research on this type of equipment to see how my solar setup is working. sense seems to be the first brand when doing any kind of search but reading reviews I see that a lot of people have issues with the app not being able to correctly ID the loads in your home. What other options are out there that I could look at? This discount is very appealing but I'd like to at least compare to other brands. Thanks
@GerardFont
@GerardFont 3 роки тому
So there are basically two types of monitoring systems: 1. branch monitoring: which you have to put CTs each each breaker. Usually more expensive to install, and also more expensive if you want to monitor everything. Sometimes you might run out of space too. Then 2. software disaggregation: which you only monitor the mains, keeping installation simple, but it does have limitations when it comes to identifying devices. There is currently not a perfect solution. But I think the Wiser / Sense is overall best

@@GerardFont - I would have to disagree with you about Sense being the best. Most of the loads that would amount to the majority of your electrical bill would be on their own breaker so having a CT on those loads would give you the most useful information. @JeanSebTr
@JeanSebTr 3 роки тому
They are two very different devices. I have the Emporia Vue2. The sense is all about user experience and simplicity as it offers a great app and machine learning (because it's only measuring the main entry). With the Vue2 you connect individual sensors to multiples circuits (up to 8 or 16), so more work and cable management in the panel. End the ends, it depends on what you wish to measure. Sense will detect individual appliances but may miss some others. Vue2 can't detect multiple appliances on the same circuit. For me the Vue2 was ideal as I want precise measurement of each baseboard heater.

I didn’t like the way it didn’t understand many electrical signatures and reviewers said they couldn’t update what devices were mistaken by sense. For the price of this it wasn’t worth it. I need to know what each circuit is consuming. If I know usage by circuit I can make some decisions on consumption of power.

i think the reason why it doesn't matter if you use a 15-amp (double pole) or a 30-amp (with the 16 wire) is because the breaker is only supplying power. such a small amount of power is used to power the device anyway. it's not protecting the device's wires...there's no such breaker that small. i think other people just double tap onto a 240-volt breaker (if designed for it), but i'm not sure if you are even allowed this. i'm not an electrician :D

Spool up the excess cable and wire-tie to mains and you've created your own CT. That is probably not a good idea if accuracy is desired.

I have had a Sense monitor installed in my full time RV for several years and it has done a really poor job of detecting my electrical devices! Even after it detects a device, it often seems to not know when the device is on and just list the power being used as other. Also, the beep it does during bootup is so weak and such a high frequency that I can't hear it and the device has No visible LEDs to indicate status or even power! Another con is that it has no Ethernet port so you are forced to use Wi-Fi. Nice try Sense but in all the years I've had it, things have really not improved much if at all!
@TheScramblerTV

I was thinking the same thing about the lack of ethernet port. I really don't understand the Wi-Fi only direction digital gadgets have been moving to in recent years. Like it only costs 5-ish dollars for manufacturers to add a damn ethernet port.

I come from the computer industry, and I am terrified by all these "smart" devices. The basic ideas are fine, but the fact that they need you to install an app and are connected to the wifi is a problem. As we're starting to see in some other industries, the companies who make the app can actually take control or take away your control. And HACKERS, man! Slightly less problematic is the fact that wifi routers have a limit to the number of devices that can be connected to it at the same time, and it seems like some people are trying their absolute best to find and exceed that limit. I really want to find something like this that has the screen connect physically instead of wirelessly and the app is in the device, so you only need to hook up a touchscreen or monitor and mouse. I certainly don't mind having to go to a place near the panel to check out the stats. If you do, then there are a few other smart home systems that use other, more secure wireless technologies to connect.

Realistically, what is a home owner going to do with the info they get? I work with these systems on switchboards...daisy-chained RS485 networks. It is very useful in an industrial setting. But, really now, how useful is it for a single residence? Sorta neat, sorta cool and sorta a waste of $$$. Sure you get data. What do you do with that data? Nothing.
@TheScramblerTV
@TheScramblerTV 3 роки тому
People could use that data to make their home more efficient, But for $300 its not worth it. I think if these kinds of energy moniters were rented out to people for a month or so it might be a good deal, But to own one is just a waste of time and money.

I have one and it tells me when my energy usage is really high - when I get that alert I go around and turn off lights and things that I am not using. Especially now that I have the heat on more often, I wasn't aware of how often I am just raking up energy expenditure. Those alerts are really helpful! Its also helpful if you rent out a property - it will tell you if items are being turned on and if you get that alert when no one is supposed to be at your property, you know there is an issue!

So this technology can somewhat guess what is running, And things like smart electrical meters have been on the rise. So it seems that electric companies are gonna start datamining people with this technology. Not fun.
@ElectricianU
@ElectricianU 3 роки тому
What companies are not data-mining every human action and interaction on the planet my friend? Facebook, Google, UKposts, your cable company, phone company, our data is everywhere at this point and there’s no reversing it. Hell our government is the largest collector of our data. I’m less worried about the power company watching me than the government lol.
@TheScramblerTV
@TheScramblerTV 3 роки тому
@@ElectricianU But there are ways to mitigate other datapoints without a serious impact on your life (quit facebook, Use startpage instead of google, Use invidious instead of youtube, Only use HTTPS sites and use DNS-over-TLS to hide from your ISP, Don't use your cellphone unless necessary, etc) But to hide from your Electric company you'd have to either quit electricity (and risk your house being condemned) or switch to solar (which you'd have to be rich or be willing to accept going into crippling debt). I'm afraid of the direction of tracking and i'd like it better if people stopped accepting new data-miners into their home (but most people don't care). Another thing to consider is that when you have your little smart gadget connected to the internet you don't know where it's going to. But it is likely its ending up in china, And i don't think you want the CCP knowing about your electrical usage habits.
