How would someone fare if they were dropped into a randomly chosen period in history? Would they have any relevant knowledge to share, or ability to invent crucial technologies given the period's constraints? Ryan North uses these hypothetical questions to explore the technological and implicit knowledge underpinning modern civilization, offering a practical guide of how one could rebuild civilization from the ground up.
Ryan North is an author, comic creator and humorist whose recent work includes the non-fiction books How To Take Over The World and How To Invent Everything. He's creator of Dinosaur Comics and The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl series for Marvel, along with many other books, comics and writing and his work has been translated into 16 different languages so far. North has a degree in Computational Linguistics and is known for his witty and useful explanations of technology, tools and problem solving.

You can make a compass by putting a needle or small piece of magnetic metal on a leaf and floating it in a puddle. To magnetize the needle, rub it on silk or wool about 100 times.

A sign that humanity is not going to go long is that this channel has just 102k subs, but kids making faces and doing dangerous stunts have millions of subs.

Meh it's always been the case that 1% of people make 99% of the progress in human history, most people are just along for the ride and that's fine

@@kitsunemeansfox is it painful to be so incredibly stu-pid ? The key figure that permits a calculation of raw milk illnesses on a per-person basis comes from a 2007 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) FoodNet survey, which found that 3.04 percent of the population consumes raw milk, or about 9.4 million people, based on the 2010 census. This number may in fact be larger in 2011 as raw milk is growing in popularity. For example, sales of raw milk increased 25 percent in California in 2010, while sales of pasteurized milk declined 3 percent. In addition, Dr. Beals has compiled published reports of illness attributed to raw milk from 1999 to 2010. During the eleven-year period, illnesses attributed to raw milk averaged 42 per year. “Using government figures for foodborne illness for the entire population, Dr. Beals has shown that you are about thirty-five thousand times more likely to get sick from other foods than you are from raw milk,” says Fallon Morell. “And with good management practices in small grass-based dairies offering fresh unprocessed whole milk for direct human consumption, we may be able to reduce the risk even further.”
