This video explores the beautiful Blue Pool or Tamolitch, and tells us of the dangers this seemingly easy destination has. The photogenic beauty and easy hike make this a very popular destination. Some visitors get into trouble and cause many rescues to be done here each year.

The temperature was probably similar when a high school friend and I decided to jump into a beautiful pool below a culvert under the road in Breckenridge, Colorado. This was mid May when the spring snow run off was getting underway. Me, a scrawny 6' and 145 lbs. probably left scratch marks in the rocks clawing my way out, and my overweight friend swam around like a polar bear!! It probably took two hours for a certain part of my male anatomy to come out of hiding after that!!!

Then you have some people doing the polar plunges that seek this kind of water.

Thank you very much. I was going to say on the other comment, I did do a blue pool video! Also did a very long one on Bohemia, and a shorter one on Thor's Well. Many places to do still as you say. Most my mining video plans were delayed due to the fires, which hit a lot of the good old mining sites, hopefully I can check some out soon and see the damage. My video uploads will be on hold for a month or two because I am working on another full length movie. I did one on Newberry last year, definitely check it out if you haven't. The stats of how long the average adult can survive in 40 degree water are impressive for their brevity. Because the pool is not a normal part of a river the rocks are very rough and some are rather loose. When the valley is 98, the mountain streams and lakes are wonderful, just have a bit of sense. I once dove into a narrow rock trough carrying glacial melt in Glacier Park. I was SO hot and sweaty from the hike up with full pack... I swear I came out faster than I went in, like a spawning salmon jumping up a waterfall: I have no idea how I did it.

I respect being thoughtful and properly prepared for any trip out doors in Oregon. I'm from Alaska and have been outside in inclement weather plenty of times, but I have to say I would be alot more worried in Oregon's thick forests. Long before sunset you could find yourself out of luck and unable to navigate even well groomed trails in those areas and that makes prep essential in my book 💯👍🏾

This is a good video with good information. Too many people undertake visits to wilderness areas with unrealistic expectations. I used to Iive near the start of the Appalachian Trail. When people would get lost, we worked with search and rescue. I had two back-n-tan coonhounds and three Rotties. The hounds could follow a scent and the Rotties could tree a bear if we met one. A surprising number of people we found had the idea that their trip to the Appalachian trail would be like watching Discovery Channel from the couch.

Great video Matt, thank you. I love smart wool as a base layer because it retains 80% of it's warmth when wet. I'm glad you mentioned cotton. You probably know the saying "cotton kills" because it will cool you down faster than if you were naked when wet. I suggest always having more water than you would drink and have an additional large bottle in the car. As a Dietitian I can confirm you made great suggestions re: food items. I hope people will take note and have a great, safe time at blue pool.

For sure I would include that in gps/maps. I do want to get a garmin device with gps and avalanche beacon.
@lynnnorthrup8914
@lynnnorthrup8914 3 роки тому
Sounds like a good plan. We're having a lot of avalanche issues here in Colorado and 4 deaths, so the beacon is a good idea. I am older and constantly traveling in remote areas without cell service so having that Garmin is essential. We also carry all the items you mentioned in your video because of where we hike and explore. This was an important message that you gave to other hikers who may not carry these safety items. Let's hope they pay attention and take your advice!!!!!

go up to Timothy lake at the base of Mt Hood...one end of the lake is fed by very cold streams coming off the mountain (and it's glacier if it still has it) the other end is dammed up with an outlet pipe and is quite deep and warm during the summer

Very pretty place, Matt! I was curious to see the blue-to-not-blue transition into the river. Is it fairly gradual, or a sudden shift to brown and murky? Or (I guess I should have left this option) does it stay just nice and crystal clear but not deep enough to look as blue?

Yeah I think it goes to normal river color pretty quick. There is another clear pool miles up the river, so it gets blue there, then loses the blue when it flows, then gets blue again after going underground.

I should have done my research a little better 😅 old or not, that's awesome! I wish I could post photos on here, I would show you some photos of their Farm they had with the pillars in the background faintly! They posed the entire logging crew in it, farm animals and all. The Demaris and Birdsong families ran a mill on Mill creek. The families worked very close together running this mill and eventually two birdsong girls married two of the Demaris boys, making my great great- grandparents one of the couples. Mill Creek to my understanding was the first sawmill in that area and produced the wood that built many of the first homesteads in the ochocos. It's too bad the Old Homestead that they built isn't there anymore. I'm here in Corvallis but hoping to one day make a trip over there to explore! Thanks for the video!

One more note: It would be a very smart move to keep a portable VHF/UHF ham radio on hand when going into places like this. Getting your ham license is NOT expensive and well worth the time to get it. My radios have been good comfort to have when I've operated in places no cell tower could ever reach, but with ham radio repeaters all over the place, I've been able to get help if I ever needed it simply by having the radio on hand.
