Summary - Video starts at 12:14. 1. Only study 30 mins at a time. 2. Last 5 mins, review/recall what learnt. 3. On break stretch any sore joints. Beginning/end studying where concentration highest. 4. When done reading, skim down what read, look at boldprint heading/words, all important things, not study just look at them - stick better. Learning definitions 1. Definitions - Can learn afew easily but combined with rest overwhelmed. Dont just learn it word for word. Wording can be changed around in tests. Better way to learn definitions - 4 steps 1. Learn word for word - have to get into head first (necessary) 2. Know the meaning of each word in the definition - if dont know word find meaning. 3. And ? - Have to be able to say it in own words (if don't understand). Work for however long takes untill can restate definition in own words. 4. And ? have to be able to give fact/example of word learned Highlights 1. Have confidence in abilities - don't doubt memory abilities - improve them. 2. Review - dont forget it, apply. keep reviewing everyday, continuously 5-10 mins everyday. 3. Learn things in own words. 4. Ask teacher if need to memorize for rote (just facts) or for understanding.

I’m a freshman taking a pre-med on one of the top performing medical schools in our country and to be honest, I’ve gotten nothing but failing grades for the first few months, this was especially depressing and discouraging for someone like me as I grew up having straight As and being the “gifted kid” but college is a different type of hell. I came across this video one day and followed everything the teacher said diligently and I haven’t failed a single exam since... Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, Sir! I am forever grateful to you for this... and if ever you’ve been struggling the same way I had, try this method, tweak it to what works for you and trust me, your situation will turn around. Best wishes.

A MOOD thank you. I’m in a similar position. In Nursing school the content of what we learn is bulky considering the limited time we have to study and wanting to have “ perfect scores “ has really messed up my grades and consequently, my confidence- literally from being a straight A’s student to entirely doubting my abilities. Come to find out- I was using the wrong study methods the whole time. Thank you for sharing and thank you for enlightening us Sir. Best of luck in school mate

Semper fidelis Semper Paratus whats your major? because STEM majors especially engineering its more than just remembering your notes. you have to apply the concept and actually learn. flash cards is not even half of it. methods definitely help. i know some who learn best by writing it out on a white board like a teacher, some like breaking down different formulas and understanding WHY. so no memorization isnt a study method depending on what your major is

Very helpful information. I thought I knew this stuff (take breaks, don't study all day) but when it's broken down into numbers, it makes complete sense! I've been studying wrong for most of the time (90-120 minute reading, staying in one position and place the whole time, or going out into the garden as a break and not coming back into the house until it's dark, etc). I've already flunked a very difficult high-level test and I'm going to use your strategies to see if I'll pass this time. Thank you for this most excellent video!

I also like to use the alphabet to remember word lists, I put the list in alphabetical order with a number for how many words for each letter. I took a spelling test (and got 100%) from memory alone, without the teacher giving the word to spell. The other students thought I was some kind of genius, but in reality I just took the time to alphabetized the list. It works well for lists if 25 to 50 words (I never tried more). This was great to remember spelling and definitions, but if course I did not retain the actual list long term. I can do the 50 states with state capitals, and am working on countries of the world. Math tricks are another favorite. This all helps to keep my brain in good shape!

I was taught to do apply this method of study in my first year of Indian School. I could not speak English - I would get punished if I spoke "Indian" [Dineh/Navajo], not a preferred way of learning but the principles were still applicable. I left Indian School after one year, moved into a predominately 'white' home and became caucasian. I applied these principles throughout my academic life. I graduated Summa Cum Laude and 1st female student to ever graduate a 'seminary' [I cannot name], Valedictorian. I accomplished yet another Valedictorian, an invite to 'Mensa' [even though I had tested of average intelligence as a freshman in high school] and again Summa Cum Laude [GPA 4+ - BTW, I also have two doctorates. I had a brain injury four years ago, I spent five months in a coma, 13 mos. in a hospital and then was transferred to a rehabilitative nursing home. They determined I would never move my limbs, my feet or my hands [in any functional way]. They determined I had significant brain damage and also would never speak English in any acceptable manner. Giving them some credit, I am having trouble learning to type. The first time I went to college, we wrote our papers in longhand. I have memory loss of 30 to 40 years except for childbirth - but, when I awoke I thought he was a newborn and I spoke in Dineh' - I panicked as I assumed he was illegitimate and my grandparents would be much shamed. I now not only pull myself up in the bed [which was a goal for me], my son is 26, divorced with 1/2 custody. I get to love him [and my grandbabies] all over again. I stand up, walk, [many times I have to use a cane for any distance outside my home], I drive, take TOTAL care of myself, I have an ileostomy, I have two hip replacements, fibula crack around rod, back is 'crushed', one kidney [I had the thing they give one when their kidneys do not work] - I also have short term memory loss], etc. YET, my house was filled with books - so, guess what I have been doing? This formula or principle has given me at least the 'learned' part of me back again - when I read something I already knew [at some point], it triggers other info I already knew, THINK what it can do for you as I am clinically an imbecile. I am of the 'Bluebird Clan, the Navajo Nation [Dineh'] - Jonny

I know this is an old video. I just wanted to thank you for uploading the video to UKposts. After being out of school for years; I am now studying for law school. This has helped me greatly. I am now applying this to my studies. Thank you.

That's great! I actually have some problems when I study but it depends, if I like the subject I can learn very fast, but when it's something like philosophy I spend half an hour just reading and trying to focus on the meaning of that line. Sometimes I wake up at 3 am because I can remember things better!

Is there anywhere I can get the handout for this specific lecture? I visited the website, but it wasn't what the students were given at the end.

I watched five of your videos and really appreciate them. I am 80 years old but see how I can apply what you have suggested. By the way, my brother attended LBCC and was on the team that won the Junior Rose Bowl against Boise, and he also held the mile record as the "barefoot" miler.

15 minutes in I drifted off and started listening again 15 minutes later, did I miss anything during the 15 minutes of the middle of the lecture.. Maybe he should teach in 15 minute intervals... Everybody take a 5 minute break and stretch... :)
