How to replace surface mount / smd IC is a nice clear soldering tutorial showing you a straight forward , easy to follow method for replacing a 100 PIN QFP ( Quad flat pack ) IC.
See also how you can protect your nearby components while removing your smd IC's , and learn the temperatures and solder you need to make your job so much easier .
The Solder used in this video is available from BLT Circuits ( England ) , temperature used for resoldering the IC was 340 degrees Celsius ( leaded solder ) , plus 340 - 400 degrees Celsius for the removal , depends what your removing , using a QUICK861DA station.
If you enjoy this soldering tutorial and find it of use please like and subscribe and hit the notification Bell so as to not miss out on any future soldering tutorials. Also please check out my many other soldering guides covering a wide variety of different subjects
Thank you for your time and good luck .

Thankyou, your videos are just what i needed. I'm having difficulty resoldering in an ic on what looks like a ceramic pcb. I snipped half the legs off which sent a shockwave dislodging the pads on that side. So i can't solder to the substrate underneath, although it is conductive. The other side is ok as i just flexed the ic like a hinge until the oins snapped. I still have useable tinned pads on that side. I'm trying conductive glue on the padless side, but it's tricky as i messed up taking the weight off the ic too soon as it was curing. I bet you could sort it. If only i could send it to you...

Hi , thank you for your comment , much appreciated. Aluminium foil will definitely help you protect your parts , it does do an amazing job . Hi , thank you for your comment, much appreciated. We can all improve the more we solder , hopefully I can help a few people . The aluminium tape is great , adhesive backed as well , much better protection against heat than Kapton tape. There is other aluminium brands out there , massive difference in prices . You don't need to spend loads just try to get one with adhesive on so stays in place while using hot air. I will probably post a video shortly on what you can protect with this tape , plastic connectors , headers etc. Thanks again , take care 👍

Hi, I really like your videos and am trying to follow along while learning to solder some retro video games I have. What kind of iron tips do you use? My iron is a T12 clone and the conic shaped tip I have doesn't work nearly as well as the one you use in your videos. Do you just bump up the heat on your soldering iron when soldering the smaller package components?
@mrsolderfix3996
@mrsolderfix3996 11 місяців тому
Hi , thank you for your comment, much appreciated. I use a Weller TCP S iron mainly ( I also have an amazing micro Metcal iron ) but all of my videos are made using the Weller. It's a 50 Watt iron and the tips I use in the video are PTP7 ( small conical) and DD8 ( large flat sided ) . I generally solder leaded solder at about 330 degrees Celsius and for lead free about 360 to 370 degrees Celsius. I may vary these slightly by putting hotter tips in but very rarely. You shouldn't need to bump up the heat when doing small devices etc but maybe these are on a ground plain so will take a little longer. I'm sure I speak about this sort of scenario in some of my other videos . I don't know your type of iron so can't comment on that . If you can afford one the best makes to get by far are Weller and Metcal . Hope that helps , thanks again 👍
@flying-carrot
@flying-carrot 11 місяців тому
@@mrsolderfix3996 it does help a lot, I think the conical tip you use is a little larger than the one I have, so that might be what's making it a little harder for me to get the heat to transfer. @mrsolderfix3996 4 місяці тому
Hi , thank you for watching the video and commenting , much appreciated . If the component I was removing , like for example the one in this video , needed to be refused it's actually pretty easy to clean up . With a fine pitch IC I simply wick off the excess solder on a few pins at a time with the braid going in the same straight direction as the pins . Alternatively another method that works well is I turn the ic over and run my wick from one end to the other with very little pressure . This works great especially if you add external flux to your braid first which I always keep mentioning in my videos . Hope that helps , thanks again 👍

how long can you apply the hot air to the PCB before it begins to delaminate at say 350 c?
@mrsolderfix3996
@mrsolderfix3996 Рік тому
Hi , thank you for your question. You can get away with a lot longer than I showed in this video . If your heat gunning a component in an area where there is no other components surrounding it and if you hold the board up to the light and this area appears as though there is no layers in there you have to be careful as it could delaminate with 2 much heat . Where boards have layers top bottom or inner then you can put a lot more heat for longer into these areas and be fine . Hope that sort of explains . I've used a lot higher than 350 degrees Celsius and always been perfectly fine . If heat gunning right on the edge of a board , try and place some aluminium foil around the edge , this will stop it burning and potentially delaminating. Hope that sort of answers your question . Good luck 👍

Hi , thank you for your comment. If you remove an IC at 400 degrees Celsius and it is attached by a thermal pad underneath it is very rare that it cannot be reused. If it comes off cleanly in my experience ( and I've changed 1,000s ) it can easily be cleaned up and used again .If IC's are bonded down for example with underfill compound they are not worth trying to take off and clean up . Hope that answers this point .

Hi , thank you. But you really don't have to donate anything , I just like making the videos . The only way I can see if you really , really did want to is to use the super thanks symbol that's underneath the video when watching it on your phone. Thanks again for everything , very kind of you 👍

Hi , thank you for your comment. I see your point but I've done other videos where I've done exactly as you've suggested and been told I should have shown the complete device so basically whatever I do I can't really win 🤷
