If you use the hex codes you don't need to type "color =". When using a hex code you can just input instead of

I love it because I always have had my monitor set darker, and its super hard to read signs in Valheim, usually I'd just mouse over and eventually just learn from placement memory, but I reorganize a lot. So signs that actually glow are gonna save me

This was very helpful. I kept getting 2 of my chests mixed up. Now I can read the sign for the stone chest and the poop chest. No more embarrassing mixups!

This is cool...brings back a memory for me from older games like call of duty 4, waw, mw2 mulitplayer back in the day you were able to do ^1 ^2 ^3 for example followed by your name or clan tag and it would change the color of your displayed name or clan tag or even create a class.

As of Patch 0.214.300, the color code will remain visible and editable in the sign input field (and text will not instantly turn to that color). So you don't have to break signs anymore to reset the color. Also, you can use emoji's in signs!

It's good to see the codes visible! But the signs won't glow any more, which needs more lights to light'em up... The more lights we add, the laggier the place becomes. Hope people care about this to say more in the official discord suggestions channel. 〒▽〒

@@elisabethdracul8397 In my experience it's the physics calculations on each building block that makes up for the most lag, though having to add an item (lights) wouldn't help against lag, you're right. Some signs would glow too much, especially in day time but others are barely visible after the update (like red). They should adjust glow levels on a per color basis. Good shout! Very cool! Usually an html input is treated as a vulnerability, so hopefully this was done correctly and on purpose, and not some oversight.

I see what you're getting at. Luckily HTML is not fully implemented, so to speak. The signs just support Unity's Rich Text Formatting. So no full HTML, even though this formatting is part of the HTML specification. For example; anything with quotation marks wouldn't work. Have a look at the link in the description for codes that are allowed :)

You're absolutely right. After I made the video the devs pushed an update containing a couple of fixes, including the code always being visible. This is a good thing, because visible or not, the code itself would always count towards the character limit. At least now you can see all the characters :)

I watched several of these sign videos now and I don't get the same result as in these videos. How are you making the text glow. All the signs that I have tried, and I put signs all over testing different things out. but all my signs are flat colors just different then black. I also checked my graphic settings and everything is maxed out so I don't think it is a graphic settings thing. Any help would be great. Thanks for the video!

Through further research I found that they took the sign glowing effect off of text sign now in a patch :( well wish they would go back to this because it looks great.

I 100% agree! They indeed patched out the glowing effect, sadly. It was a very welcome feature imo especially for the red text. Devs keep messing with the signs in most recent updates. Just after I posted the video they made the code stay visible, but removed that feature in the next patch. For best visibility, always have a light pointed at the sign :)

Thank you for the video Very nice tips. Still I do have a problem. I can't write on the map (to mark something) with lowercase letters. I tried with the codes and on the map it shows only uppercase letter, no matter if the code is for a lowercase letter or uppercase letter. On signs the codes work correctly. Any ideas? Thank you

I personally haven't tried code like this on map markers. It didn't occur to me that this might be a possibility! I myself am not aware of supported code that makes the font in-game lower case. I always thought that the font simply didn't have a lower case variant. Would you mind sharing your knowledge? Because if that works, I have some redecorating to do. And of course, more testing!

@@easyboarder I do not know either. I can write a name of a portal with small caps and it stays like that but with the in-game tags on the map didn't have any success. Seeing your discoveries I was wondering if it is a way to write with small caps.on the map. I think you are right, the font used in the game does not have small caps. My first language is not english, so please excuse me if I was misunderstood. Cheers!

Thanks! My first good build was a long house but as I continued playing, I decided to add more modern astetics. I built a fighting pit from a graydwarf spawner but it just didn't feel right until I added a bar and grill for the patrons.

As a developer myself I think this is cool but also kinda of scary security wise that the HTML is injectable usually a very basic thing developers do is put safeguards in place for things like this because malicious commands can be put in especially if it links to a db in any way

This was also my first thought. I'm not that familiar with HTML injections. I just know that anything containing quotation marks will not work. Feel free to test though, I'm sure the experiences of a white hat hacker (someone who uses hacking skills to benefit the good) would be of great value to the dev team! :)

I have tried the portals and also the map markers. But sadly that doesn't work. Curiously, text on the map markers WILL turn colored while typing, but end up white if you hit enter.

Sadly, you can not change the font. Any code that requires quotation marks ( " ) doesn't work I've noticed.

My signs don't glow and my graphics are more than the maximum so where am I going wrong with this? They are importing the hex code but the sign only changes color, it doesn't glow. It did sometimes but for a split second of time like it blinked.

After I made this video the devs pushed an update that includes signs. Sadly, they got rid of the glow :( you're not doing anything wrong, the devs simply changed how signs look. It's debatable if this is a good choice. On one hand, charcoal signs also don't glow irl, but on the other hand, some colors are way harder to see now.

That's an interesting question! I haven't tested this, though I doubt it would work. You'd lose 19 characters for the start and end tag alone. Feel free to try this and let us know :D

Why does your signs are kinda emitting light, when mine is not lit and you can't tell the difference between regular black color and "blue" after sunset.

After I made the video, devs changed how signs look and removed the glowing effect. Make sure signs are well lit so you can still see the colors.

Sadly, there's no glow anymore. Right after I published this video, the devs posted a patch so the colors don't glow anymore. There are some colors that still seem to glow a little bit, like white. Unless there's a mod for it, the glow is gone for now sadly.

One of the down side is : Color dont glow at day time.. So you will not see (As good as black) some color like "orange". You see it good at night but not at day time. Almost look black on day time. Still clearly visible.

For that reason, I ended up using white a lot. Red is visible during daytime but only if you put a light directly on it. A torch next to it will do.

That's good practice! It's also always fun to browse the character map in Windows by typing "character" when you open the Start menu (assuming your system language is English) and use those on signs.

You're right. The devs have made some changes and lightblue doesn't seem to work anymore. All hex codes (link in description) should still work though :)

The dev's have said that the Xbox version is basically the same game, so if I were a betting man I'd say yes. As long as you have a keyboard connected. Inputting emotes could be difficult on a console though.

You're right. Since the following patch (after the video came out) devs have removed/severely reduced the glowing effect. In certain lighting conditions, like when you look at light colors with a dverger circlet (head lamp), they can still appear to glow a little.

It's not valid HTML in the current standard, you're right. I believe this was called inline CSS back in the day (don't quote me on that). This type of markup is now a part of Unity's Rich Text Formatting. But hey, it works!

I've found the best editor is the one you know. I've tried a couple of them, but ended up feeling most at home with Filmora. A recommendation couldn't hurt though. What's your recommendation?

@EasyBoarder light blue worked pink didn't. red also works, but red isn't too bright. light blue for me was the brightest but I was trying with pink and pink wouldn't work. So I guess I gotto do the other method for other colours.

If you want to use color names, there's only a few that work. Words that work are: aqua, black, blue, fuchsia, gray, green, lime, maroon, navy, olive, purple, red, silver, teal, white, and yellow. If you want something in between, you could use hex codes: www.baskent.edu.tr/~tkaracay/etudio/agora/nnn/html_colors.htm

Angle bracket open equals color then you type the color angle bracket close and then you type the word and it works on Xbox just like that

I don't disagree with this. I assume the devs just went with what unity supports by default. It's a bonus, but you're right, it could've been better. I absolutely love the game but some things are inconsistent. The shape of build pieces is another example of inconsistency.
