I just used this to help a customer that came into our Help Desk. Make sure to uncheck "Different First Page" if it is checked before you add the page numbers or else you will run into some errors. Order is important at this point. Thanks for the guide!

I'm trying this, but I already have a footer in place, and it differs after page 1. When I follow your instructions, it seems to put in the new header, but then grabs the footer from page 1, rather than the one from page 2 onward. I'll noodle around.

The problem now is trying to use the "quick parts" option on the insert menu of the design tab because even though it's not linked to previous, it's starting my roman numerals out at II instead of I. I just want the damn prelude not to have any chapter numbers!! Sadness.

@JessxMango hey sorry for the late reply. Ok so put ur curser on the end of the second page, then go to 'page layout' tab, look for the little icon to the right of the word 'orientation' in the 'page setup' box. So click the icon, looks like a page getting torn in half, then click 'next page' from the options, then go to the third page, and right click in the header space, click 'edit header'. then (continued in next post)

This was a big help Thanks. My first chapter in section 2 has no header on top which is the way I want it. But the next chapter has unwanted header on top. How can I continue my fiction novel format to look like printed paperback? Thanks.

@JessxMango right click in the header space, click 'edit header'. then click on 'link to previous' then you should be able to place your curser in the header section, type the number 1, and no other numbers should show up in the first or second page. I think that is it. I hope that helps

I have a large table throughout the document and have not placed Page Breaks in the doc. On Page 2, I chose the section break, however, when on page 3, edit header, design view - the "link to previous" is not available/highlighted. Any ideas?

After following the directions, my footer does begin on page three. However, the page number is "Page 0". I prefer it say Page 1, of course. Can anyone help?

Just make sure you don't use Page Break, or it won't work. Use Section Break instead. You can delete Page Breaks by clicking on "Show all nonprinting characters" (the big paragraph symbol icon in the tools section at the top), then you can see them and delete them. Usually-I had to do shift-up arrow to move to one that was somehow invisible to then delete it and use a section break instead.

I am beside myself. I just don't understand where microsoft engineers are coming up with this stuff... Intuitive has flown out the window with Microsoft. There is NO way anybody would figure that out. Same with excel, try making a graph! OMG!! why didn't they stick to X and Y axis and DONE. Noo... they come up with their own "we pulled this out of our ___" style. And I'm actually tech smart... Trying to explain this to people is ridiculus. BUT THANKS FOR THE VIDEO. GREAT VIDEO :)

how to add header in only one page

For 2010 version, tick the box where it says "Different First Page"

Also remember that, when you use the 'section Break - Next page' This will break page 2 from 3. This means that if you have more pages, you'll have to separate those as well. Also you have to turn off 'link to previous' for EVERY section break you made, otherwise the numbers will still be all the same.

But the next page is numbered from zero when you choose 'Next page'. So this doesn't work really

if you want your second page to start with the number 1 in the header. simply create your header, click a the box for a different first page, then in the formatting section for the numbers go to start with and make it a 0. by doing this the cover page will be a 0 and your first page of type will be a 1.

I used to make two different documents and combine them later because the first 10 pages did not need header and footers while the rest did. Why is this information not common knowledge?
