Good vid. I've been playing hockey for almost 50 years. Stopped here and there when the kids were young or starting a career. Technology has changed. I had those plastic Micron skates when I was around 10 or 12. Those were hard to tie effectively! Zero flex. I tie my skates similar to what you showed. I use wax laces and find the bottom few holes don't move much and if they are too tight, my toes go numb. I have 10 holes in my skates. I barely touch the bottom 3. Then I tighten the next 3 a bit, leaving some flex. Then the next 2 get a bit of a snug so they aren't loose but I can move them, just like you showed. I concentrate on the top two holes. I always always always do a double under to keep them from slipping! I keep the top two snug but not too tight. After all the years of pucks off the ankle and shin, too many bruises to aggravate and I don't want lace bite (had that too many times). I also use gel pads on the inside of my ankles. I use very short, thin socks, keeping any seams away from my ankles to avoid irritation. I also find a sock seam by my toes will cause them to go numb or hurt! I usually find after about 30 - 40 minutes of beer league or drop-in hockey, I retie the top two or three holes, just a bit to keep my ankles supported. I'm going to experiment with the lace from the outside rather than the inside. Good tip!

Definitely earned my sub, thank you. Everything was awesome. Then you mentioned old school methods of lacing, and right there you had me. I’m pushing 40 trying to still play. Both knees looking at being replaced, right ankle broken three times, last one never set right. Got back to playing roller and ice since stopping after college puck and midnight. I came back and the equipment is all different, I still play with my old Cooper shoulder pads. Thanks for vid, it helped me realize how much it hasn’t changed, just my fear of snapping an other ankle this late in the game. I won’t change the way I play but my hat is off too those who move it forward.

Great video! I tie my skates the same way with a couple of small differences. I use waxes laces which I feel holds the lower laces tighter, longer. I found with regular laces, the looseness of the arch area would migrate to the lower ball area. Also, I do not lace the top eyelet. This keeps the ankle more mobile, and cuts down on lace bite on the front tendon. My feet are weird though. I tried the size down method, and actually ended up (after years of pain and experimentation) a half size larger (11) than my shoe size (10.5).

I just bought my first pair of ice skates and this video was very helpful. I have wide feet and high arches. The shop said I needed DD width but they did not have a pair in stock so my ice skates are D width. I found wearing my skates barefoot and lacing them up like this video was perfect as it gave me that extra bit of width I needed and room in the arch to be comfortable. Looking forward to trying my skates this weekend!

Thanks for the history lesson and tips. I am probably over tightening Coffey style on my kids' boot while lacing up, thinking tighter is better for support. Thanks for highlighting inside out vs outside in. Have you considered other “weird” patterns around the tongue instead of staying loose? It seems like loose will negate bottom and top tightness. Perhaps you could try to alter you pattern by doing a big X or switching from inside to outside? Would make a good video, especially from someone who understands power skating so well.

There are variables at play but I would day tighter on the ankle as a beginner until you develop more control....and a tad dull blades help you learn how to keep your blade neutral and slide into your stops first. Think slide and not immediate stopping.

@DuPrawPowerskating
@DuPrawPowerskating Місяць тому
I absolutely do, I know pros that are so tight their feet are purplish red after games and other pros that I have no idea how their edge work is so good when they are so loose. I can't state this enough....the only thing cookie cutter advice is for making cookies. The only time I tell a player about their stick flex, lie, kick weight, or skate fit to shin guards over or under the lounge is if it affects performance. Otherwise it's up to the individual. Sit and listen sometime to all the free advice out there. There's a ton, you have to find what works best for you or have a professional watch your mechanics and sort through it.

Wouldn’t the tension between the various areas just even out as one skated? Are you using waxed laces if they still make such a thing?
@DuPrawPowerskating
@DuPrawPowerskating 9 місяців тому
They adjust a bit, but the snug loser tight seems to hold for me. They do still make waxed laces, but I don't use them.
@pj6973
@pj6973 2 роки тому
Very interesting actually. The thing I don’t understand is if you tighten the bottom part of the skates and then leave the middle loose, unless you tie your skates like Paul Coffee with two different sets of laces, wouldn’t the bottom become looser as the game goes on? And how do you decide how many eyelets to come down from the top if you’re a shorter guy. It doesn’t seem logical for a shorter guy to tie skates all the way to the top. It would seem you would lose a lot of flexibility.
@DuPrawPowerskating
@DuPrawPowerskating 2 роки тому
It's all about personal feel. This is what works for me or I get the middle of foot and arch cramps. The way I tie at the top they don't get looser and if they do. Just re- adjust in between periods. Skates are still made to perform a certain way. I wouldn't take away eyelets unless you have unbelievable ankle strength and control. I'm a short guy and I go all the way to the top. That's just how they are engineered these days, but way stiffer than 20 years ago. But at the end of the day.... remember that's why I said in the video.... everyone has a different feel. Ultimately you have to find the balance between what is engineered for performance and feel. The manufacturer would tell you logically they are built lace all the way to the top. But that doesn't mean it will 100% work for you. Thanks for your comment.
@pj6973
@pj6973 2 роки тому
@@DuPrawPowerskating Thanks for your reply. Sticks and skates have such a personal touch to them. Like you said, it works for you. What you DID do was make me think about trying a couple different ways of tying my skates and see what the benefits are. Also, I have tried a few different profiles and it seems well worth trying a couple different radius' to find what works best for your height and skating style. Thank you.

I played hockey for 6 years and ski raced for 10 years, where the flex at the top of the boot is where you gained the most power, and skiing and ice skating are very similar physics wise. But on my skates I feel like the lip of the tongue is so soft. I wrap my laces once around the back at the top to give myself more flex resistance but it doesn’t seem to help enough. Is there anything else I can do with my laces to increase the resistance above my ankles?
@DuPrawPowerskating
@DuPrawPowerskating Рік тому
I know this is old school and some people don't like the looks but if you are a former ski racer you have been used to even more resistance and rigidity.....might think about taping with cloth or clear hockey tape at the last eyelet around mid to tounge and tendon guard...what kind of skates do you wear? Coach Ryan

I'm 31, and can skate pretty well from when I was a teenager. Trying to get back into hockey again and I just bought a pair of boots today. I got them the same size as the shoe size that I wear. Seemed most comfortable, as when I tried a smaller pair it felt that the sides of my feet were going to cramp up. Is this going to be a problem with the larger skate? I can maybe move my foot 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch forward/backward when the tongue of the boot is completely loose. Feels good on the sides, too, and I like to do my laces very tight.

Im barefoot also! I just hate the feeling of socks in my skates, Ive even tried the thinnies type socks, just cant do it! With socks, its like I'm disconnected from the ice.

😃Steve thanks for watching... zip..none.. one of the last of the Barefoot breed! I tried to go thin and I'm just one of the weird ones that feels their edges and power better with nothing. Swim with caution though because at a Hurricanes Adult Hockey Camp teaching quickstarts ...I was going extra quick and knicked the inside of my ankle and opened me up....good thing one of the coaches was medic!

It's called a cinch action. Winch would need a fulcrum or pulley.

never tape your ankle's, your knees will hurt years later and you end up pulling your groin more

Constructive comment here bud: Your back-ground music is way too loud and competing with your voice. It's you we want hear, not music. Thanks for the video.
