You don’t need a degree to be able to write a story and share experiences and bring attention to an issue. Journalists with degrees have technical skills. They may know how to better say something, but they don’t own the arena of writing. You don’t need a degree to know how to have journalistic integrity (which is an extremely loaded term but that’s for another day). The only reason these two professions have degrees is so that people take us seriously and so we can get paid, because that’s what society told us we needed to do. But homeschooling exists, and so does community journalism. Back in the 60s and 70s, everyone put out a magazine. These walls we put up around some professions are artifice. (Please don’t bring up doctors as a kind of gotcha, either.)
