How Walmart Is Beating Everyone In Groceries

Sky high grocery bills are inflicting pain at the supermarket checkout counter. Food-at-home prices in 2022 jumped 11.4% and are expected to increase 5% in 2023. By comparison prices rose just 0.7% in 2019.
In an effort to stretch their grocery dollars further a growing number of Americans are turning to Walmart. The Arkansas-based retailer is America’s largest grocer more than twice the size of its next biggest competitor. Known for its low prices and massive footprint Walmart takes in more than one in four grocery dollars in the U.S., a one and a half percent increase from 2021.
Walmart’s low prices are also resonating with high income consumers who made up about half of the company’s market share gains in food in the fiscal quarter that ended January 2023. But with inflation cooling and prices leveling off will Walmart be able to hang to its newly acquired shoppers?

this was by design they chased out all small stores now they jack up their prices!!!! they adopted that model for everything else, they started selling groceries in 1988... not all of the stores opened where aimed at replacing the food supply... now thats their goal during recessions everyone will need food, not so much the rest of the garbage they sell in the store

The biggest problem with Aldi is that they tend to have to limited of a selection and don't carry many products an individual may need. They are cheap, and they do have some advantages. But they can't replace a traditional grocery store since they don't carry many items.

My local grocery: when a specific item is on sale, it’s less expensive than walmart. plus my grocery store has additional coupons to add onto something which may already be on sale, and you can tack that on. and they all give rewards towards future purchases. i just look at the website, and compare before i set out to shop. i look at the prices at costco and i am able to do the best i can, while growing vegetables myself. Walmart sucks. Too bad so many just go there for everything

Wal-Mart has slightly lower grocery prices on most (not all) items. It's also a more spacious and less cramped parking and shopping experience. Plus the layout is easier at checkout. Their self-checkouts, while not perfect, do move faster and are more organized than say, Kroger, which has a chaotic checkout. All of that said, Wal-Mart employees are generally out to lunch, so don't even try to ask a question or ask where something is.

I don't always find Walmart to be the cheapest. Other stores have bogo options, better sales or places like Aldi that are just plain cheaper on many items. It's also getting harder to find certain items at Walmart. Certain brands, varieties, flavors have disappeared as the isles have been taken over by whatever mega brand has bought the shelf space. I still get some things there, but it hasn't been a one stop shopping place for us in a long time. And it's typically much more stressful. Less associates, less registers and messier overall. I appreciate that they have grocery pick-up, but I've lost count of how many times the isles have been blocked or I've been bumped by those huge blue carts that associates are wheeling around to fill the pick-up orders. We're blessed to live in an area with more options (which I know not everyone is). We do a little Walmart, Publix, Aldi, Target and BJ's. We don't shop at them all every week, but pretty much keep an eye on the sales and buy when it's a good price stocking up a bit. Keeping an eye on the sales, coupons, fuel offers, etc takes a bit of time, but we save a lot. Competition is a good thing.

My best friend owns a local grocery store in a mid-size metropolitan area. There are a lot of products that Walmart actually sells cheaper in their stores than he can buy it from his own suppliers from. Milk in the video is a good example, it is about $1.50 less per gallon at walmart than his own suppliers will sell it to him at. Bananas are his top selling produce item and he buys them by the crate from walmart because they are 25¢ per pound less than he can buy them direct from Dole, for the same bananas. So he actually buys from Walmart and resells at his own store. His store targets more affluent shoppers and it was incredibly successful even up into the pandemic. But since 2021 sales have plummetted and he said a lot of his regulars have started buying more and more at walmart because of prices and only shop with him for a few specialty items or local items that only he has. So his average order size has dropped significantly meaning people are buying the bulk of their groceries at places like walmart. And this is from an almost exclusively affluent customer-base.

@@Jean.A.squirrel small biz also hurt themselves. Have you ever shopped at a local farmer market? they grow their own yet they charge an arm and a leg. Big Chain can scale in size but that often come with cost of managing and transportation. In places like China, local grown farmer sells veg and fruits at a local market much cheaper than big chain. Here in the US, big chain sells cheaper than local market. You gotta wonder why some small grocery stores fail. I admit that local farmer market tend to be more fresh and stuff, and yes, i had supported local for a long time. I kept on contributing but local isn't giving back to the community. Part of supporting local is to keep local thriving, but local farmer market tends to upcharge for "fresher". Local people want to support local hoping they weed out the middlemen upcharge yet ends up being screwed by local farmer anyway. Might as well weed out the local farmer and let them sell to places like wal-mart and then resold back to me at a lower price. sigh~ gotta give and take. Often enough people forgot the human side of the businesses, this is very detrimental to any business.

@@Jean.A.squirrel I don't want to see their cost, I want to see their profit which I can't see. The cost you mentioned are applicable to farmers selling to big chains. Not all things are shipped oversea. Local farmer market also sells things they don't grow themselves, those items often are more expensive than chains too. I wouldn't be surprised if you add up enough farmer market to match the revenue of that of walmart, and notice profit on these combined market is more than walmart. Don't try to be smart here. 12 hour day? oh lord, it's not always the owners that are doing the 12 hours. A lot of office workers do 12 hours when they factor in commutes and their side jobs, not all of them are making what farmer market owners are making. Don't give me that 12 hour argument, there are a lot of people in the US working more than 10 hours a day to survive. If local market can't cut out middlemen cost, there is something wrong. It's either big chains are selling at a loss, or a specific local market is riding on the meme and making a lot of money.

One factor, I think, is that Walmart essentially has no competition any longer. They hold all the leverage over suppliers. I worked for a company that did merchandising in Walmart. This was several years ago. Walmart brought in representatives from the big beverage companies and demanded that they eat an increase in the cost of their products so Walmart could retain the same margin without raising their prices. One of the companies refused. By close of business the next day, Walmart had taken down all of the secondary displays of that company's products, leaving their only representation in the various coolers throughout the store or in the warm beverage home location. The beverage company bent the knee a mere couple of days later, after which their secondary locations were restored. Walmart could not get away with doing that if their retail segment had healthy competition.
@Life_is_Shorts

that is basic business and not illegal, please advise what this idea in your head of healthy competition. Cut the non sense, they is zero workable solution just average people crying about business. If your a supplier and I request a decrease and you do not then I have the right to take your advertisement out of my stores. No one is forced to do anything but the company want the advertising in the store so they changed their decision. The cost risk was an issue and even with other businesses they still had an opportunity to gain value in other aspects. Again this is business, what else do you prefer commie or socialist methods instead. Make it fair and pass a equal opportunity act because WalMart is an oppressor they are a bigger company which trades in volume.

I never said anything about it being illegal. I did say that the relationship is one-sided in Walmart's favor and I stand by that statement. I should also say that I began calling on Walmart as a sale/service representative in 1985. They had real competition back then, and they were FAR more willing to compromise with a supplier then than they are now. That's just a fact.@@Life_is_Shorts

Walmart may only be worth it if you shop in store. If you opt for delivery even with their Walmart plus membership you always have to pay a tip to instacart. The tip every time you order groceries ends up making your annual Walmart plus membership way more costly. I found it was also difficult getting my stuff. It was like they couldn’t find delivery people (even though I always tipped). Some orders had to be outright cancelled because I never received them. That’s when I decided to switch to an annual Kroger membership. The Kroger deliveries don’t require tipping and your groceries are kept cold in a refrigerated Kroger truck. Plus my groceries are delivered right on time like clockwork by actual Kroger employees. Best decision I ever made.

I used to live in Texas and I shopped frequently at Walmart. But I discovered that the stores were often careless with stocking inventory that was delivered on their docks. After several incidents where I had milk spoil only a couple of days after purchase, I noticed that the loading docks for the Texas stores near me were easily accessible from the interior and the dock's contents were visible ... so every time I went into the store I'd take quick look in the back at the loading dock. To my surprise the stores routinely accepted delivery of product from refrigerated trucks and allowed the inventory to be offloaded and sit in on the docks. The docks were at or near outside air temperatures, which often meant close to 100F. Dairy was being allowed to sit on the loading dock until shift change or the evening staff arrived to restock the store. I knew this because most of my shopping trips occurred after work around 8pm in the evening. It would be 8pm in the summer with the sun going down and no one in sight at the docks, but there would be stacks of milk, yogurt, eggs and cheese sitting there on pallets on the dock. I was appalled. That might work in some milder parts of the country, but it's unacceptable in the deep south where outside temperatures can promote spoilage in a matter of hours. I was amazed they didn't know this. When I asked the low level staff about this, they said it's what they were told to do. After that experience, I decided I would never buy fresh meat, or dairy from Walmart again. I continued to buy produce, frozen and other processed and prepackaged foods as well as dry goods based on the premise that I could tell what condition the product was in from visual inspection. But I wasn't buying milk, eggs, yogurt and in some cases cheese because I didn't feel they cared to handle those types of refrigerated products safely.
@tiffymag
@tiffymag 6 місяців тому
Dairy doesn't spoil "in a matter of hours". It's much quicker for food safety. If it has been out of the refrigerator temps (safe zone) for more than 30 minutes, it needs to be thrown out to adhere to food safety standards. Next time, sit outside and watch the milks for thirty minutes. Then report it.

My nearest Walmart is almost next to an Aldi. Aldi usually undercuts Walmart’s prices, comparing Aldi’s house-brand items (almost all of what Aldi sells) to Walmart’s. Very often, Aldi or Walmart will adjust prices so that similar items have the same price. Aldi has a limited number of sizes and a much smaller selection, but the stores are tiny and the checkout lines are shorter than Walmart’s. I buy much more at Aldi but if I show up early in the day, Walmart shopping isn’t too bad, and the big selection can be useful.

I had the Walmart+ delivery and had to cancel it b/c the delivery drivers were constantly delivering my orders to someone else! They would take a picture of it which clearly wasn't my place! I contacted them numerous times and they would reimburse me but what I hated most was other people getting my orders free of charge! also they would not substitute my items with a comparable item if they were out of stock. if I ordered tomatoes, they would say they were out of stock!! and just drop it from my order! but to shop there in person i have always found what I was looking for.

I've been shopping online groceries at Walmart for home delivery for 4 years now. it works perfectly. I don't waste any more time or gasoline standing in line or buying a whole bunch of unnecessary stuff that was not on my initial shopping list. you cannot lower the prices of food but if you change your method of shopping you will save money just in the shopping experience itself. The nice thing is that I can continuously add to my shopping list online and then just hit the button and next morning it's at my door. The amount of time I save shopping online rather than waiting in line I can do work making money and the two of those things combined means a lot of extra money in your pocket. as for quality they always pick really good stuff it's very rare that there is a problem but nothing more than what it would be if I were getting my own fresh food where you pick a rotten food once in awhile. The other thing is that when you shop online you get to see all the cheapest prices whereas you might miss the deals in the store.

@@karinaz8756 Here in Canada the prices are 100% exactly the same online as in the store. They charge five or $6 for delivery. I used to spend half a day or more shopping for groceries. That alone cost me over $100 just in the time that I lose from my business. Not to mention gasoline, expenditure for a car. When I shop online for a product in the store it lists all the best prices first. I can open up several tabs on my web browser and see which of all the grocery stores in my area have the cheapest prices and just order what I want at the best prices. Some stores even have free delivery. I used to go to the dollar store with a list of less than $10 and come out with over 40 or $50 worth of stuff. When you shop in the store you end up buying a whole bunch of unnecessary stuff and that adds to the bill. Who wants to work hard all week doing construction and then have to get up Saturday morning and fight with crowds at the grocery store when I can just open my front door and there's all my groceries and I can just chill relax and enjoy the day. Stores might charge a fee for curbside but how much did you pay in gasoline to get to the curb and how much time did you lose because time is money. I'm a contractor in house renovation you know how much money I lose per hour shopping at the store. Lots.

Timely video. After spending north of $100K in various Walmart stores over the past 40 years, I am done with them. Just this past weekend, after buying groceries at my Walmart of choice (Prosper, TX), I went to checkout and discovered there were no cashiers. Instead, there were something like two dozen self-checkout stations. No warning, no explanation. It was chaotic. People had carts full of food and other items. Some items did not have bar codes, so you had to ask one of the random employees standing around (and otherwise doing NOTHING) for help, which meant sifting through multiple computer screens until the item was found (if it could be found at all). All because the billionaires in Arkansas (read: Walton family) are too cheap to pay cashiers a living wage. Walmart could not care less about customers. I was not the only one upset that day, so my guess is that they are going to lose customers. Good! Walmart's produce and meat is terrible. (Um, I am not going to trust a robot to choose bananas for me...ugh) Fortunately, just this past August, HEB opened a store near where I live. They get my business because, besides good merch and friendly, helpful employees (which I have never found at Walmart), HEB actually has 15 or more cashiers. Checkout is fast and painless. I think it helps that HEB is family-owned, and they do not have to answer to Wall Street.

She didn’t verbally ask, but began flailing her hands around. I showed it to her (again…just water & beer) and she proceeded to count every beer and every bottled water as if I was going to steal one by forcing it into the already shrink wrapped packaging. I grocery shop almost exclusively at Walmart and Aldi. I compare prices every trip. Aldi is still cheaper and their products have less chemicals, dyes, and bioengineered food ingredients. I do appreciate that Walmart doesn't inflate their prices on items picked up curbside like other stores do.

my location happens to be in an ethnically chinese canadian suburb. sometimes, i forget i'm in a walmart! selection is pretty wide. prices are and still were very reasonable even during the prime covid years. it's got an incredible produce section gai lan, bak choi yui choi, snow pea tips, daikon, melons, usual carrots potatos onions peppers, fruits so forth. cold section for hotpot and dimsum selections even. it also has (live) seafood section. i've picked up dungenous crab a few times. going to try to buy some of their lobsters one day. as well, has an asian butcher so i grab some quick tripe brisket flank too at the same time can still get detergent, motor oil, work boots, yard tools, and some kid toys legos. but don't particularly care for their clothes that's all. regular eggs and milk are always cheap. it's the middle isle canned goods boxed goods that's inflated in price past 5 yrs- that's everywhere.. you do walk out with a bigbox cheap feel still but you knew that walking in already. definitely not the small neighbourhood market need to bring the car and intend to pickup 5 -50 items to enjoy larger savings.

Safeway (Randall's for me) is such a mixed bag sometimes! There are some things they beat other grocers on. Their produce tends to be kept nicely stocked and good quality. When they put something on sale, it can beat the other grocers, especially in the meat department. Their app will also tend to give me coupons on deals based on things I buy after it gets to know your habits. In the summer they have that big container of cut watermelon for $5!

When I lived in shreveport we had Brookshires, Albertsons, price lo, super 1, Krogers, the commissary on base, and a few others. If you put a little time in you could easily find deals. Where I live now in Texas it's just Walmart, Walmart marketplace, target, Sam's club, aldis, heb, and the commissary. I go to HEB for perishables and Walmart for box goods. The perishables at HEB are fresher and last longer. Walmart is definitely the big dog though. I have 4 Supercenters and 3 marketplaces within a 20 minute drive from my house and 3 HEB's in the same space. The prices are relatively close. Just depends on who is having sales on what. That said they are all going up. But no where near as bad as say New York or California. Even our gas is right under $3.00.
