Lyrics:
At Standing Rock the Jackboot Jump
You’d swear was all the rage
Whether tearing up old treaties,
Or just tearing up the place
It’s always corporate infrastructure
Over the structure of your face
In Moscow the Jackboot show
Has so much in store
For any silly student
Who doesn’t wanna learn the score
So the Moscow Jackboot Ballet
Finds some scared young dancing floor
In Hong Kong it won’t be long
‘til they have to fall in line
For the long hand of Beijing
Stretching south a thousand miles
Where they rock the Jackboot Jump there
Like that shit’s going out of style
All around the world
You'd think that things were looking rough
But the jackboot only jumps down
On people standing up
So you know good things are happening
When the jackboot needs to jump
Directed by Sydney Gawlik
Vocals and Guitar: Andrew Hozier-Byrne
Drums: Rory Doyle

Brenda Martínez i got chills when I heard that at his concert. My dad used to travel to Japan a lot when I was younger and they have a similar saying to that, something like « the hammer only hits the nail that stands up ». It’s eerie remembering the strange expression on my dad’s face when he explained it, in the context of everything going on today and this amazing song
@TheSilence1
@TheSilence1 4 роки тому
@@mmmfoy13 The idiom is "The nail that sticks out gets hammered." That Japanese idiom has a completely different meaning to the meaning of this song. This song is pro-revolution, and that idiom is pro-conformity.

TheSilence1 yeah I get what you’re saying. I think he uses the slight reference to the idiom as an ironic or kind of wary nod to the forces that uphold it, rather than as a support of the ideals behind it. The “jackboot jump” is how the nail gets hammered down is how I saw it

@@MariaDanieladelaRosa the jackboot is a metaphor for facist/authoritarian governments stomping on the civil rights and wellness of its people. Basically the line "you know good things are happening when the jackboot needs to jump" means that a civil rights/humanity movement of some kind happened that was powerful enough that it made the government (jackboot) afraid enough of it that they sent in forces (the jackboot 'jumping' into place) to quash it The whole horrible situation of china attempting to control hong kong i believe is one such event referenced in the song

the thing that makes hozier so good is the fact that you can tell he’s clearly enjoying making music, he’s not doing it for money, and furthermore he calls out the privileges and uses his platform for good. i don’t know many other artists who openly take every pride flag in their shows or call out the church or extreme right agendas.

I think the beauty in Hoziers music is his desire to preach to power, he really tries and succeeds at Nina Simone's sentiment of "the duty of an artist". Whether it be from the suppression of Natives as a whole, or the hindrance of expression in Moscow, to the ongoing fight for freedom in Hong Kong, this man wants you to know about it, and will preach against it.

The fact entertainers are not obligated to take a stand on anyting going on in the world and using their platform for something good, that is always the sentiment as of the past year or two that I've seen even now if they're musicians, it's the art and it's something that they believe in and so why not use their platform for something they believe in? Hozier just does it not for something that's happening in the news right now and this and that and for publicity sake, or because another artist did something, he does it because it is on his mind and it is right. He seems he wouldn't care if he never get another penny for his music and lost the record deal that he's with , even if he could not seek another whatever , I believe that he would be one of those musicians playing somewhere like largo in LA like that Sebastian stienbeck and Fiona Apple and John Brian and Sarah and her brother from nickelCreek and the late Mr. Tench , you know what I mean? They just play for the love of music and not having to make a record whether it's old songs or new ones that they wrote and it's stress free, they can be musicians and it's for the heart and the release it gives them and the performance and for the people that get to see it and hear it (it wasn't even until in recent times that any recordings was even allowed in there so it's not even for something like that) I believe that this beautiful six-and-a-half foot tall Irish man that plays rhythm and blues so well that TBH is the first white man I've been attracted to in all my life and his playing of rhythm and blues on the guitar and his writing and his voice it's just beautiful , and his mind and his interviews! I really appreciate him and I don't see him doing anyting problematic even if I don't like a song or agree with a mythology thing or whatever it doesn't matter, he will make beautiful music and have something good to say and the whole- if you have nothing nice to say don't say nothing at all seems to apply to him. I believe he was raised with a good moral fashion and this song is just just proof , proof artists can be famous and be true to themselves and do something just good and it not be a money thing and it stays beautiful , okay bye

Hong Kong- Hong Kong protests against mainland China's government out of fear of losing freedoms under strict Chinese rule and a desire for more democracy Edit: there are some good elaborations in the replies, read those for more info that’s probably more accurate

Everything he sings about Russia is about protests against government that's been happening in Moscow and some other cities since July. And, Russia is famous for its ballet and there is Big Moscow Ballet Theater in, well, Moscow. So the line about "Moscow jackboot ballet" (sorry for so many "ballets" ahah) is a metaphor for the violence of police and how it sort of dances in its own cruel way, I think

Hongkonger here. Just a bit of additional background information. Although the general premise of the protests is largely so, the trigger point is when the HK govt tried to pass extradition law amendment bill let local authorities extradite fugitives wanted in Taiwan and mainland China (since a Hongkonger murdered his gf in Taiwan in 2018). If passed, the bill would have let local authorities extradite fugitives wanted in Taiwan and mainland China, which HK does not have an extradition agreement with. This sparked concerns on subjecting Hong Kong residents and VISITORS to the mainland Chinese jurisdiction and legal system, undermining the region's autonomy and civil liberties, thus the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill (Anti-ELAB) movement began. TL;DR HK govt tried to pass law sending fugitives to mainland China from Hong Kong, bypassing HK own legal systems, subjecting everyone in HK including VISITORS to mainland China legal system. This sparked off the protests. But FINALLY somebody started actually discussing the lyrics, really appreciate that❤️

I hear the whole Moscow verse as a salty dig at the fact that his music-video protagonist in "Movement", ballet dancer Polunin, suddenly became a mouthpiece for Vladimir Putin - even tattooing Putin's face on his chest! That must have completely blindsided Hozier, and he still has to say Polunin's name whenever he sings Movement!
@Aj-sn1dp
@Aj-sn1dp 3 роки тому
Yes! I was wondering if he'd ever address what happened with Polunin. Andrew has been outspoken in his dislike towards Putin so for him to pull a 180 must've been ass

Polunin danced to Tmtc.... And Hozier repaid the compliment by having him dance in Movement.... How gutted he must have been to see Polunins true colours...

Also is anyone really feelin the sound of the crowd in the bg of this, the same way the birds chirping in cherry wine works perfectly? Like with this it's just not just a song, it's a call to rise up. It's a protest song. And with a screaming, cheering crowd like this one, it almost sounds like a roar. A studio recording would just be a single voice pushing his message forward, but with the crowd it's like their roar is pushing him and his message up, up, up until none of us can be ignored anymore.

Honestly, he never needs a studio version! Not that there is anything...at all...ever wrong with anything he does in studio. Never. Anything. At all. But his live stuff, just is the stuff that puts wind in my sails! Couldn't be more perfect. Unless it's a surprise like this one, then it's more perfect. Plus, it hurts not one tiny bit that with the live songs, one also gets to enjoy seeing him stomp and whip that hair and show that smile and...well you get the idea. *ahem! just need a lil drink of water..is it hot in here? no? ok pardon me then, so sorry!*🥵🤤🙃

*!GIVES ME CHILLS!* Lots of love from Russia, I appreciate the lyrics. That's so incredible that he cares about what is happening in the world. I need to say that now people in Russia are trying to have a conversation with the government in a protest form, they just got tired of all the corruption and system itself that leads to poverty. The injustice itself is so frustrating... Unfortunately, I cannot make it to his 3arena concert in Dublin, got the tickets and everything, but visa and finals are a burden. Hope that the next year he gives some concerts too and he won't disappear for 4 or 5 years. *Loooove youu SOOO MUCH, Andrew!*

Real talk though , it's really rare this days to find a real artist who cares about his music to it's smallest details , seeing you caring even about the artwork of the album cover and putting so much work on it , just reflect how much you care about your work and it's obvious to think that someone who cares that much about an artwork is sure to care about his music too to it's so damn details That kind of care is only found in real artist of the old days like Michael Jackson , Lionel richie , beetles , Queen and Whitney Houston , It's really rare and refreshing to see a new generation artist who cares So i think what i wanna say is *Thank You*
