@patriciasawyer24 bear spray is a highly effective deterrent. Check out what the park service says about bear spray. I personally have used bear spray a number of times on problem bears with a great success rate. You have to understand your weapon for it to be effective. Most people greatly over estimate the distance bear spray is effective. It's about 10 feet. Outside that beat spray has no PRACTICAL effect.

They're wild animals. When you think that you have them down to a science, that's when you get complacent and get killed. A few things, I imagine, the first of those being the knowledge that a brown bear will very rarely attack a human (let alone a group of humans) without provocation. Carrying bear spray and a firearm doesn't hurt, either.

I would want a guide with a rifle, or better yet a rifle of my own and no guide. A handgun is nice backup, but that's about it. I would want a rifle in .375 or .458.

He knows these bears in particular. That goes a long way. Most bears will respond like this. Starving bears are the ones who won't. It looks like there's plenty of salmon around that the bear would prefer anyway.

@@davida6146 Depends on where you live, but eating the meat of a predatory animal might be a bad idea, as they can contain bacteria and the larvae of dangerous parasites. Generally safe if prepared properly. Its a shame, because I hate the idea of animals being killed and their meat going to waste.

Virginia still has bears, but Alaska's bears are far more dangerous. Bears used to be in all of North America that wasn't a dessert

If he's hungry, he would be more cautious about his approach, unless he's killed and eaten people before. He would circle them and test their defenses before committing to an attack. If he was enraged, he might ignore bear spray, but he isn't enraged/protecting a kill/a mother bear with cubs/caught by surprise.

Bear spray is perfectly legitimate way of deterring bears. It's used because it works. The hint is in the name. Guns are also good, both works. Lars Monsen had 276 bear encounters across the boreal forests of eurasia and na. Not one single bear shot. Take a guess right now how many people have died from bears in NA in the last 20 years. Take a couple of seconds to guess. It's about 0.5 person per year on the entire north American continent, with a million bears and about nearly 600 million people. People have too high opinions of themselves. Not even bears are interested you. 😂

Charging is more of a defensive behavior. This one stopped chasing the salmon, looked at the people, began scent profiling the wind coming from them and then made a precarious small step toward them to center his body to them so that he could chase if we wanted to. The read was correct by the guide and the verbal command was obviously a useful cue to stop the curious probing this bear was beginning to display.

@@alton31ellis while, yes, the guide was correct in being defensive, this bear 100% had no interest in anything to do with the people. You see the red salmon in the water mid video. The bear sees them too and follows them as the salmon went downstream. However, the people are too close for the bears desire. When the bear follows the salmon but gets too close to the people , it stops. The bear was guaging whether to follow the salmon while being uncomfortably close to people, or to ditch the salmon while prioritizing it's own comfort & safety. There was definitely no aggressive intent by the bear

@@ForrestMccroy It's not. Several folks have been killed by bears while spraying the bear point blank right in the face. It keeps curious animals honest which is the vast majority of cases. It doesn't do a damn thing against a bear that's desperate to kill you because it hasn't eaten in weeks or extremely aggressive because you got too close to its cubs or startled the hell out of it and its now in fight mode. There have also been studies that some bears can build up a tolerance to it if they've been engaged with it several times. Much like pepper spray with humans. It's really effective when the person isn't committed and it's their first time. There're also some people where it has little effect at all. You see the same with dog spray. It also has a ridiculously short effective range. That means if the spray fails, you're now way too close to a very pissed off animal to engage with a firearm without taking some damage. This guy boasts about his 44mag that he carries not realizing that if the spray fails, he isn't getting that revolver out of its holster without getting mauled in the process. Most bear sprays have an effective range of around 10 ft. A bear can cover that distance in well under a second. That revolver isn't even going to clear leather before the bear gets to him. This is compounded by the fact that most bear sprays are deployed using two hands so it's difficult to have your revolver in one hand and the spray in the other.

They run so fast without making noise. At least the one in Alasks I encountered. I had no bear spray, but had a gun, it wasn't a magnum and instead of being on my person it was under my towels at the tree because I was about to floor on my floaters. My dog was on the bank and I started clapping my hands and calling her in the water with me. The grizzly stood up on its hinds turned around and ran away so fast without making it a sound. I was shaking as much as my pit bull. That was the day I realized my gun was inadequate especially if it wasn't on my person, and that my dog couldn't kill a grizzly by herself, that the bear could literally know my head off and send it rolling on the ground with one swipe of their paw, tgey have HUGE paws, the size of your head, how fast they can run and how silent they can be. I also, got a good dose of how mortal I truly am, and how much you should always respect the wild outdoors and the animals in it. Because all y9u are is a hink of meat.

Bears are only afraid of other bears. They are top of the food chain, outcompeting both wolves and mountain lions. The only reason they would be afraid of humans is if they have been bear-sprayed before, in which case the will detect the scent of humans and keep their distance, usually. But like 99% of bears have not encountered bear spray and most aggressive human/bear encounters result in the shooting of bear, rather than in the spraying of the bear. Which is dumb because shooting a bear is less effective at stopping an attack than macing it, because a bear will take multiple shots and still take minutes to bleed out, whilst being thoroughly pissed off in the mean time. Whereas spray means its not fighting for its life, it just hates it and leaves, due to their sensitive noses.
